My goal for the day was to visit the U Zina Pagoda. But on the way there and afterwards, I had many small adventures. This video is about those small adventures.
Near my guest house, I met a group of students who needed to interview a foreigner for 10 minutes. I was happy to be their interviewee. A bit later, I came across a jetty, and I walked down to the water to check out the fascinating boats docked there.
Finally, I dropped by an open-air restaurant for lunch. I was hoping to sample some local Mon cuisine, but circumstances led me to a more basic, but very tasty, meal.
Cheers,

Q&A (1) _ Leicester/shire: City and County of Literature _ Bishop St, 13/12/17
Bobba Cass (Pinggg...k!), Emma Lee (President, Leicester Writers Club), Farhana Shaikh (Dahlia Publishing / Leicester Writes Short Story Prize), and Matthew Pegg (Director, Mantle Arts / Mantle Lane Press) take part in a Question and Answer session at Leicester/shire: City and County of Literature, an event that was held at the Bishop Street Methodist Church in Leicester on 13 December 2017.
Organised by the Leicester Writers' Showcase, and chaired by Attenborough Arts Centre director, Michaela Butter MBE, the event looked at the literary activity that takes place in Leicester and Leicestershire and asked what can be done to raise the profile of the scene locally, nationally and internationally.
The next event in the series will be held at the African Caribbean Centre on 11 July 2018.

Restoring Dignity March 2015
Eight years ago, a Karen family of seven was resettled to the United States with hopes of building a new life away from their war-torn home country of Burma. Prior to coming to America, they spent over 20 years in a Thailand refugee camp where they waited to be resettled in a peaceful country. Their first home away from the camps was in Texas, and in 2013 they made the move to Omaha, in search of better employment and a stronger Karen community. Life was going well: the father obtained a good job, the children were excelling in school, and prospects of buying a home began to emerge. However, on August 31st, 2014 everything changed. The father suffered a stroke that left him permanently numb on one side of his body. Unable to work any manual labor jobs, the family roles dramatically shifted, and the mother obtained factory employment over 2 hours from home. For the past 6 months, she has been staying with a friend during the week, and comes home on the weekends to see her husband and children. In her absence, the 19 year old son has stepped up and taken on the role of caring for his brothers and sisters, which has significantly changed the course of his dreams. During his two years of high school in Omaha, he became President of the THRIVE Club, took AP classes, and was recently offered multiple excellent scholarships to several colleges. His dream of moving out-of-state to attend college has ended, as he is now a caregiver to his siblings. The devastation that the stroke thrust upon this family cannot be described in words, and they now stand picking up the pieces of a life they cannot go back to. After being made aware of their situation, we provided the family with a home that they can heal and rebuild their lives in.

Digging Trenches in WWII
My dad was 11 years old at Christmas in 1941 when the Japanese invaded; at Christmas 1988 he told some of the story. When speaking, he was an obstetrician in practice for more than 25 years in Cleveland, having delivered thousands of children. He remembers many fun experiences (dodging the Bazaar Day tax collector) but the stark reality of life during wartime in occupied Burma sometimes creeps through. As dad would say, Listen to the story... It's all true.
