Daniel M'Naghten
Daniel M'Naghten was a Scottish woodturner who assassinated English civil servant Edward Drummond while suffering from paranoid delusions. Through his trial and its aftermath, he has given his name to the legal test of criminal insanity in England and other common law jurisdictions known as the M'Naghten Rules.
There is disagreement over how M'Naghten's name should be spelt. M'Naghten is favoured in both English and American law reports, although the original trial report used M'Naughton; Bethlem and Broadmoor records use McNaughton and McNaughten. In a 1981 book about the case, Richard Moran, Professor of Criminology at Mount Holyoke College, uses the spelling McNaughtan, arguing that this was the family spelling. Until 1981, there was only one known signature: that which M'Naghten affixed to a sworn statement given before the magistrate at Bow Street during his arraignment. This signature, preserved in the Metropolitan Police File at the Public Records Office in Chancery Lane, London, first came to the attention of legal scholars in 1956. According to an authority at the British Museum this signature was spelt McNaughtun. Since this spelling did not conform to any of those in popular use, it did not help to resolve the controversy.
Moran discovered a second signature during his research. On the front page of the Scotch Reformers Gazette, supplementary edition for 4 March 1843, there appeared an artist's sketch of Daniel M'Naghten standing in the dock at Old Bailey, accompanied by an engraving of his signature. This signature revealed that the apparent u in the Bow Street signature was actually an a. It also indicated that the apostrophe was used by printers to signify a small letter c placed above the line, since the Scotch Reformers Gazette, in the article accompanying the sketch and signature, used an inverted apostrophe to resemble more closely the letter c. The spelling 'McNaughtan' was confirmed in the Glasgow Postal Directory for the years 1835 to 1844. While the Victorians were not always consistent in the way they spelled their names, even in official documents, several signatures of M'Naghten's father, uncovered while examining financial records at the Bank of Scotland, indicate that the 'McNaughtan' spelling was the one used by the family.
Most of what is known about M'Naghten comes from evidence given at his trial and newspaper reports that appeared between his arrest and his trial. He was born in Scotland in 1813, the illegitimate son of a Glasgow woodturner and landlord, also called Daniel M'Naghten. After the death of his mother Ada, M'Naghten went to live with his father's family and became an apprentice and later a journeyman at his father's workshop in Stockwell Street, Glasgow. When his father decided not to offer him a partnership, M'Naghten left the business and, after a three-year career as an actor, returned to Glasgow in 1835 to set up his own woodturning workshop.
For the next five years he ran a successful woodturning business, first in Turners Court and then in Stockwell Street. He was sober and industrious, and by living frugally was able to save a considerable sum of money. In his spare time he attended the Glasgow Mechanics' Institute and the Athenaeum Debating Society, walked and read. He taught himself French so that he could read La Rochefoucauld. His political views were radical, and he employed the Chartist Abram Duncan in his workshop.

About Edmund Rice
Edmund Rice was born in Ireland in 1762 into an Irish Catholic family who were tennant farmers. Edmund showed promise early in his life and he was educated first in a hedge school and later at an academy in Kilkenny.
At 17 Edmund was apprenticed to his uncle Michael who had a prosperous business in Waterford. Fifteen years later, Edmund inherited the business and was a very wealthy man. At 23 he married, but a few years later, his wife met with a fatal accident in the latter stages of her pregnancy. She died after the birth of a handicapped daughter. Edmund's life was shattered but he accepted this heavy cross with truly Christian resignation.
The next twelve years consisted of loneliness, serious thought and much prayer. What did God want him to do with his life now? Finally, in 1802 he made the courageous decision to sell his business and use all his accumulated wealth to help the poor, especially the young people deprived of a Catholic education. To assist him in his work he founded the Order of the Christian Brothers, which received Papal approval in 1820. The work of education prospered and at the time of Edmund's death in 1844 there were 41 Brothers' schools in Ireland and England. Br Patrick Ambrose Treacy with three companions made the first permanent foundation of the Christian Brothers in Australia in 1868 when they opened a school in Melbourne.
This great and holy man has been described by one writer in the following words:
He was a down-to-earth visionary, a practical idealist and, above all, a man motivated by love, who knew precisely what he was about. Like every pioneering leader, he had to be willing to leave the solid foothold of a settled way of life to walk upon the waters of an uncertain future.
Edmund Rice Education challenges all to act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with their God according to Edmund's story and dream. The goals of Edmund Rice Education are to break the cycle of poverty and to enable people to be transformational in their society. The worth and liberation of the individual enhanced by personal formation in the light of Gospel and Christian values are essential in Edmund Rice Education. These are exemplified in the presence, availability and love of a mentor.

Sylacauga Marble Festival 2012
A Rome Near Home:
It's a small town filled with quaint and friendly, family-run restaurants and stores, it even has an ice cream creamery near the downtown area that fills up a city park on a warm, spring day with school children enjoying the field-trip ice cream from the creamery. In the same park several artists chisel and grind on odd shaped pieces of white marble, forming them into shapes of greek gods, abstract lyric-like figures, and embracing bodies. The children watch with curiosity, amazement and amusement as they finish off their melting ice cream. It may sound like a scene from an Italian tourist guidebook, but this town is closer to home than you might think.
For the past four years, the ageless town of Sylacauga, Alabama (ageless meaning the 1950's in American ageless terms) hosts it's annual Magic of Marble Festival starting around the second week of April bringing together a hand full of sculptors from across the U.S. and Canada to socialize and learn from special guest artists from Italy. This year's guest artist was Renzo Maggi from Pietrasanta, a city on the coast of northern Tuscany in Italy. With someone like Renzo, who is an amazing, amazing carver, we get to see things you cannot see usually outside of Italy. Someone with 50 years of experience is a very rare thing in North America describes David Perrett, a visiting artist from Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba, Canada.
Fifteen sculptors attended this year's festival, but the special guest from Italy isn't the only draw, Sylacauga is home of several marble quarries that mine some of the whitest marble on earth, and the local marble has been compared to the famous Carrara marble of Italy that many classic artists have used to sculpt their masterpieces (just goggle Michelangelo and Carrara and see what pops up!).
Over half of the artists that attended this years festival are return students from the three previous festivals. Attending artists range from hobbyists to full-on future and current Michelangelo's themselves, who charge several thousand dollars per sculpture that could take up to two or three months to carve and finish.

David Billa (Ajith Kumar), a Sri Lankan refugee arrives at the city of Rameswaram in a boat. He is interrogated by a corrupt police officer before he is allowed to enter the refuge camp. At the shelter he befriends Ranjith (Yog Japee) and others. After a series of events the corrupt police officer Raghubir Sinha (Krishna Kumar) conspires against them and harasses them. Soon, Billa and Ranjith are hired to transport fish from Rameshwaram to Chennai. But the fishes had diamonds hidden them and as per the plot they get caught in the check post . Soon after realising what had happened he kills all the cops and delivers the fish on time to Selvaraj (Ilavarasu) who recruits them for his illegal activities. Billa goes and murders Inspector Raghubir Sinha brutally at a brothel. He then goes back to meet his elder sister (Janaki Sabesh) and his niece Jasmine (Parvathy Omanakuttan) in a church. When they see his gun, they realise that he is involved in crime. Not knowing what to say, Billa simply walks away. Kotiswara Rao (Manoj K.Jeyan) comes to meet Selvaraj and expresses his grievances of not being able to sell cocaine in Goa. Billa promises to sell it for him for a commission, and sets out to meet a local thug who betrays them and one of Billa's friend gets killed in the process. But Billa kills all the thugs very brutally with his other friends and evades the scene with both the money and the cocaine. Soon Billa meets Abbasi (Sudhanshu Pandey) in Goa who is Kotiswara Rao's Boss. He likes Billa and recruits him. He also introduces his girlfriend Sameera (Bruna Abdullah) to him. After a party held at his club he receives a phone call from the Russian mafia led by Dimitri (Vidyut Jamwal) telling him that his arms consignment has been held by the Indian coastal guards and he asks for his help. Billa and Ranjith retrieve the consignment for him. Both are congratulated by Dimitri for their work. Soon David Billa learns that his sister has died, and he brings Jasmine with him to live in a big villa in Goa. Then he goes to Russia to meet Dimitri who happens to own an arms and ammunition manufacturing unit, with Kotiswara Rao where he signs a deal with Dimitri without the knowledge of Abbasi in presence of Jagdish (Rahman), a corrupt Interpol officer helping these underworld criminals. Abbasi becomes furious at Billa's daring and disobedient behaviour, and Kotiswara Rao adds fuel to the fire. Abbasi turns against Billa, and eventually gets killed by him in the series of events that follow. Now Billa becomes the most powerful crime lord extending his business without any boundaries. He also gets Sameera, Abbasi's girlfriend. Dimitri then meets Billa and asks him to provide a safe passage for the arms consignment through India. Billa refuses as his commission payment would be very low. Angered by this, Dimitri hires Kotiswara Rao, along with a government minister and his son to eliminate Billa . Also some other problems for Billa, when the chief minister is murdered by one of his party ministers, and the blame falls on Billa as he would be the one at a party to speak last to the CM, and the CM happens to threaten to get him arrested. But Billa gets released on bail with Ranjit's help. Billa's rivals conspire a plot to eliminate Billa and they kidnap Jasmine. Billa rescues her and he informs Sameera to come to a church to take Jasmine away to Malaysia to safety. But Sameera conspires against them and the goons with the minister's son arrive at the church, and hold both Billa and Jasmine captives. Billa is stabbed by one of the goons. After an argument, the minister's son slits Jasmine's throat. Unable to witness the death of his love, Billa overpowers everyone and kills all the goons including the minister's son. This is the scene at which the film initially starts.
