Church of St John The Evangelist - Tolpuddle, Dorchester, Dorset, UK
Tolpuddle, Dorset, St John's Church:
Most people visit the Dorset village of Tolpuddle for its links to the 19th century union activists known to history as the Tolpuddle Martyrs. The Martyrs were a group of farm workers who tried to create a trade union to help bring about better wages and working conditions. As a result they were transported abroad to penal colonies in Australia until a public outcry forced the government to pardon them.
The tree where the Martyr's met stands just outside the churchyard of St John the Baptist, on the main road through the village.
St John's is a 12th century building, though it stands on the foundations of a much earlier building. The church was enlarged in the 13th and 14th centuries. An bit of trouble broke out in 1581 when the incumbent, William Turner, died. During his burial service the parishioners seized the vicarage and locked the church doors because they waned the right to name their own vicar.
The church was restored in 1855 by TH Wyatt, consultant architect to the Church Building Society.
The most interesting historic feature inside the church is a 12th century Purbeck marble effigy of Philip the priest. We know nothing about Philip or his history, but the effigy has been dated on stylistic grounds to the very early 12th century. One unusual feature is the inscription which runs around the outside of the grave slab. It reads:
SI QUIS AMAT XPM
QUI SARCOPHAGUM VIDET ISTUM
DICAT PRESBITERO
REQUIEN DA CHRISTE PHILIPPO
Which translates as:
'If any lover of Christ should see this tombstone,
let him say 'Grant rest, O Christ, to Philip the priest'

The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America (/əˈmɛrɪkə/), is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19]
At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2)[20] and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area,[fn 7] and the third-most populous. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city is New York City; twelve other major metropolitan areas—each with at least 4.5 million inhabitants—are Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Riverside.
St Birinus & Dorchester :: In Search of England
Find my books on Amazon
This time while searching for England we head to Oxfordshire's lazy river Thames and the early Christian missionaries who lived there. Dorchester, the most historic town in Oxfordshire.
This is the first video I shot with my new camera gimbal. I am still messing about with it, so the audio is a little different from the norm, and there are one or two jerky pans.

The Birthplace of Thomas Hardy
May I encourage you to visit the birthplace of the much loved author and poet, Thomas Hardy?
It's sometimes asked, What did Thomas Hardy write? It was my delight to discover that Thomas Hardy was not only born here, he lived here long enough to write, Under The Greenwood Tree, and my favourite, Far From The Madding Crowd.
The book's title is liked to have come from Thomas Gray's poem - Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. (1751)
'Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife,
Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray;
Along the cool sequester'd vale of life
They kept the noiseless tenor of their way.'
'Madding' means 'behaving madly' or 'frenzied' - and this cottage, its gardens, and the walk through Thorncombe Wood to the cottage is indeed far from the madding crowd. Interestingly, I chose not to use the audio from the woods, however, because the birdsong was overlaid upon the madding noise of the local roads.

We really enjoyed the Visitor Centre and Café too. There's plenty to do for the whole family. On our visit, the specials on the menu included homemade Smoked Mackerel Pâté, and Smoked Haddock and Cheese Fishcakes. We were very happy with our meal.
I'd give yourself a morning or an afternoon to visit. Nearby is Stinsford Church - St Michael's - strongly associated with the Hardy family - including a dedicated stained glass window, stone carving, and the family graves.
Our habit is to visit Hardy's Cottage first, then have some lunch at the Visitor Centre, and then travel on to St Michael's. We finish up our day at Max Gate where my chief delight is to sit at a desk similar to one Hardy would have written at, look out of the window of his study, and then, inspired, to write a poem.
Watch out for further videos celebrating the Hardy Trail.

Hassen Rasool - The Royal Call to Prayer From London, England - Karl Jenkins - The Armed Man
Once again The Call to Prayer was performed by Hassen Rasool who was delighted to be asked to perform the Adhan at The ancient church of St Pancras, on Euston Road, London, United Kingdom on the 4th July 2018.
The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins with Haydn’s Mass in Time of War was performed to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One.
Presented by : UBS CHORAL SOCIETY & ORCHESTRA, BANK OF AMERICA, MERRILL LYNCH CHOIR & SINFONIETTA, AON CHOIR, ROYAL ACADEMY CHOIR, FAIRLAWN SINGERS.
The Adhan (The Call to Prayer) was performed in the middle of the musical composition, providing a brilliantly contrasted evening of music and spirituality which was both exhilarating and inspiring. See the end of the video to hear some raw emotion from some members of the audience.
The movement which is the existence of the universe is the movement of love.

#91 A Little Church in West Clandon
I couldn't visit the ruin I was intending to today as filming was happening, so I stopped off instead at St Peter and St Paul’s Church in West Clandon near Guildford in Surrey for a little exploration. The original Saxon church was rebuilt around 1180 resulting in the small Church you see today. The north and south doorways are from the original Norman Church, but the chancel was rebuilt around 1200 AD and the tower was probably added at the same time.
