Memorial Service at Glasnevin Cemetery, at the ALONE Millennium Plot
In July 2012 we combined the opening of the redesigned Millennium Plot with a celebration of the many volunteers who have served with ALONE over the last 35 years. ALONE has maintained this grave since Dublin's millenium year, in 1988. The plot provides a final resting place for people whose remains are unidentified or unclaimed. Previous to 1988 such people would have been buried in the twilight hours in unmarked 'paupers' graves' in what was known as 'poor ground'. Every person who is laid to rest in the Millennium Plot has their burial marked by ALONE, with their name inscribed on a headstone. Many ALONE service users also choose to this plot as their last resting place, where they can feel they will be cared for and respected even after death.
