Exploring St Nicholas Church in Arundel, West Sussex
Today it is my pleasure to meet John Barkshire, one of the stewards of St Nicholas Church in Arundel in West Sussex, John very kindly agreed to show me some of the many curious artifacts to be found in the well cared for church on offer for the visitor. These include the curious witches circles scratched on the pillars, the amazing stone carved pulpit, the Anglican nave and altar and the private Catholic chapel that belongs exclusively to the Duke of Norfolk; all within the same building.

St Nicholas' Church, Kenilworth is a Church of England parish church in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England. The church is built of local red sandstones. The main phases of building are Decorated Gothic, Perpendicular Gothic and a Gothic Revival Victorian restoration of 1864. It is a Grade I listed building. The church is a short distance south of the High Street, next to the Norman and Gothic ruins of St Mary's Abbey, over which much of the churchyard of St Nicholas now extends.

Arundel, a historic market town in West Sussex, England
A slideshow of my visit to the beautiful town of Arundel in West Sussex, England. This historic market town is situated on the River Arun and boasts some breathtaking views as you approach it from the surrounding countryside, taking in its famous castle, cathedral and parish church of St Nicholas. I visited the town with my grandad in June last year, (one of many visits I have made during my 36 years). We started by trekking up the very, very steep hill to St Nicholas' church, a favourite place of mine to always visit. It was built in 1380 and looks out over the town. The churchyard is much like any other English country churchyard, excepting the rather emotive sight of a statue of Christ on the cross with the dramatic backdrop of Arundel Castle in the background.
Then onto Arundel Castle, where we lunched in the grounds before entering the Fitzalan Chapel, which can be seen from the interior of St Nicholas' church, but accessed from the castle grounds (hence a long walk!). The chapel is very fine with exquisite carvings, engravings and brasses. It has a quiet and eerie atmosphere, as befitting its age and function. Oliver Cromwell is said to have stabled his horses in the chapel during the English Civil War, when the Arundel Castle changed hands 3 times. Then we looked around the newly opened Earl's gardens, which were full of delights for keen gardeners like myself and my grandad (that's where I get it from.) There were some lovely views looking towards the Cathdral (built 1873) and the aforementioned church. The castle itself was our last port of call, sadly no cameras were permitted inside. I find it hard to get excited about portraits and silver spoons in glass cabinets, so this was the dullest part of the visit for me, excepting the reputed bedroom of Queen Matilda, a great but tragic figure of English history. Best thing of all was time spent with my grandad :-)
Arundel's other great attraction is of course the Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre, a place I visit often, but not on this day (not enough time).

Best places to visit in England. Arundel Town, West Sussex 4K - February 2019
Arundel town, West Sussex , February 2019
Arundel is a market town and civil parish in a steep vale of the South Downs, West Sussex, England. The much-conserved town has a medieval castle and Roman Catholic cathedral. Although smaller in population than most other parishes, Arundel has a museum and comes second behind much larger Chichester in its number of listed buildings in West Sussex. The River Arun runs through the eastern side of the town. Arundel was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Reform Act 1835. From 1836-1889 the town had its own Borough police force with a strength of three. In 1974 it became part of the Arun district, and is now a civil parish with a town council.
Best places to visit in the UK. Arundel is a beautiful scenic market town in West Sussex. Arundel Cathedral is an amazing place to visit and just opposite to it is the 14th century historic church of Saint Nicholas.
Arundel Castle wasn't open when we visited. It is open from end or March till end of October

St Margaret's Church, Ifield, West Sussex
St Margaret's Church is an Anglican church in the Ifield neighbourhood of Crawley, a town and borough in West Sussex, England. It is the ancient parish church of; the medieval settlement of the village of Ifield.
The present building incorporates the chancel from a 13th-century church which may have replaced a wooden building of two or three centuries earlier. Additions in the 14th century included stone effigies representing a knight and his wife, considered to be excellent examples of such sculptures. More structural changes took place at regular intervals, and a major Victorian restoration by architect Somers Clarke included an extension to the nave and a new tower. English Heritage has listed the church at Grade I because of its architectural and historical importance.
The churchyard has many old tombs and monuments, including writer Mark Lemon's grave and an elaborately decorated table tomb, which is listed separately by English Heritage at Grade II. Further memorials adorn the interior walls. Internal fixtures include a 12th-century font with unusual decorative carvings.

Arundel Cathedral
Arundel cathedral is the second most dominant feature on Arundel's skyline (after the Arundel Castle of course). If you think the cathedral seems a slightly odd shape, then that's because the original plan to build a spire never materialised - cowboy builders, eh? It is quite an impressive building, and seems a little out of place in such a small town. On approach to Arundel the Cathedral & castle dominate the skyline. Well worth a visit while there.

Arundel, W.Sussex
Set on the beautiful Arun river is the town of Arundel. On approch to the town the castle dominates the scenery, and the Cathedral challenges it for that position. There are many restaurants and coffee shops. tea room in town & on the river. Arundel has so much to offer the tourist or local day visitor. There is the church of St Nicholas, the castle gardens & the Fitzalan chaple to name but a few. Yes! Arundel should be on everyones list of places to see in the south east.
