Walks in Shropshire: Shrewsbury Town Walk
Today I am exploring the market town of Shrewsbury from a newcomer's perspective and imagining that I have travelled in by rail. What might I find.
Shrewsbury is a market town whose centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. The town is the birthplace of Charles Darwin. Horticulture remains popular, and the Shrewsbury Flower Show is one of the largest horticultural events in England.

Exploring The Yew Tree at Priors Dean Church, Hampshire
Time to explore another yew tree. This one is at Priors Dean Church in Hampshire. Julia Hartley and Elizabeth Housden join me on this rough and ready look at the ancient tree which surely has to be two thousand years old. The adjacent church is Saxon and only half that age, but is a charming building with the typical tiny windows used at that time. Sadly we couldn't get into the church to have a look around so we'll have to return another day. Interestingly, Priors Dean Church has no dedication.

Exploring Shrewsbury Castle in Shropshire with Harriet and Lola
I am up in Shropshire to meet up with Harriet and her dachshund, Lola. We are exploring Shrewsbury Castle, originally a stronghold built by Roger de Montgomery and later reworked by Thomas Telford.
I am keen to visit Laura's Tower, or should that be bower? She was the daughter of Sir William Pulteney. The little turret tower looks over the rooftops of this wonderful county town and beyond to the Wrekin and Haughmond Hill.

Paul Stone sings amazing song at his own funeral UK May 2014
Pauls own recording of 'Walk Away' made famous by Matt Monroe, was played to family and friends as Paul's coffin left St Nicholas Church, Newport on 29th May 2014. A fabulous and moving farewell to my brother - a loving father, grandfather, and a great friend. xxx

Harriet, Lola and I go to Montgomery in Wales
I have teamed up yet again with the lovely Harriet and Lola to explore the wonderful town of Montgomery in Wales. As well as the fabulous Georgian square, proud town hall, amazing views, we are hunting out two curiosities which fascinate me. The first is the Robber's Grave with its peculiar legend. The second is the remaining structure from the town's gaol.
There is a second part to this trip in which Harriet, Lol and I, visit the fabulous ruins of Montgomery Castle. Do check that out.

__History__
Castle Roche (Irish: Dún Gall) is a Norman castle located some 10 km (7 miles) north-west of Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. It was the seat of the De Verdun family (also spelt De Verdon), who built the castle in 1236 AD.
t is built upon a large rocky outcrop and commands extensive views of the surrounding country. Together with a deep moat, its strong walls rendered it virtually impregnable. A secret passage once connected the castle to a round tower outpost. St. Ronan's Well lies nearby.
The De Verdun family of Belton, Leicestershire and Alton, Staffordshire had a history in the region, Bertram de Verdun arriving as part of John's first expedition to Ireland. By 1185 he had erected a manor house at Castletown Mount and subsequently obtained the town's charter in 1189.
Bertram's granddaughter Rohesia de Verdun from Alton, England was married to Theobald le Botiller, 2nd Chief Butler of Ireland. After her husband’s sudden death whilst travelling in Poitou, France, she moved to her lands in Ireland. She immediately set about fortifying the land with a castle. However, her quick-tempered reputation deterred all potential architects. She then offered her hand in marriage (and thereby a share in her wealth) to the man who would build the castle to her liking. Local legend has it, after their wedding banquet in the newly completed castle, she invited her husband to the bridal suite and urged him to view their estate from the large bedroom window. Taking no chances with the castle’s secrets, she promptly pushed her new husband from the window, where he plummeted towards his death. The window was known thereafter as the Murder Window. Rohesia became a nun in Gracedieu Priory, Leicestershire, died there in 1247 and was buried in nearby Belton parish church where her effigy may be seen. Although it is generally accepted that Rohesia originally commissioned the castle, much of it is thought to have been added by her son by Theobald; John. The name Castle Roche is thought to be derived from Rohesia's Castle.
The site of the castle held a strategic position on the frontier between the (then) exclusively Gaelic province of Ulster, and the Anglo-Norman territory known as The Pale and controlled the pass into what is now South Armagh. The de Verdon family held the site for many years. Nicholas de Verdon (who died in 1316) was in charge during the Bruce Invasion by Edward Bruce, brother of Robert the Bruce. A hosting of all English forces in Ireland took place here in 1561 but the castle was finally laid to ruin in 1641, during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.

Liverpool's status as a port city has attracted a diverse population, which, historically, was drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly from Ireland and Wales. The city is also home to the oldest Black African community in the country and the oldest Chinese community in Europe.
Natives and residents of the city of Liverpool are referred to as Liverpudlians, and colloquially as Scousers, a reference to scouse, a form of stew. The word Scouse has also become synonymous with the Liverpool accent and dialect.
