Places to see in ( Grantham - UK )
Grantham is a market town in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. Grantham straddles the London to Edinburgh East Coast Main Line railway and the River Witham and is bounded to the west by the A1 main north–south trunk road. Grantham lies about 23 miles (37 km) south of the city and county town of Lincoln, and about 22 miles (35 km) east of the city of Nottingham.
Grantham is notable for being the birthplace of the former UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher, for having educated Isaac Newton at its King's School, for having the first female police officers in the United Kingdom (Edith Smith in 1914), and for producing the first running diesel engine in 1892 and the UK's first tractor in 1896.
Grantham boundary crosses the A1 to the west at the Dysart Road bridge. North of there it lies to the east of the A1. Grantham crosses the B1174 at Gonerby Hill. All of the Manthorpe estate is a part of the town, but the (smaller) Manthorpe village and the church are part of Belton and Manthorpe civil parish.
The conference and hospitality industry are well represented in the Grantham area, with the Olde Barn Hotel in Marston, the De Vere Belton Woods Hotel, the Ramada hotel (former Marriott) and various golf clubs. Stoke Rochford Hall won the Les Routiers Wedding Venue of the Year in 2011. The Griffin Inn at Irnham won the 2012 Les Routiers B&B of the Year Award.
The Grantham Parade and the Grantham Festival take place every year. There was an annual pig drive through the centre of the town until 1962. Grantham and its surrounding area is home to the peregrine falcons, which roost in the bell tower of St Wulfram's Church, and the Grantham Gobbler, a heron. Both of these birds are voracious predators.
Grantham railway station is served by the London-Edinburgh East Coast Main Line (between the stops for Peterborough and Newark Northgate), and the Nottingham to Skegness Line (Poacher Line). Grantham was once linked to Nottingham by the Grantham Canal. It is possible to walk and cycle along the canal starting from Grantham near the A1/A607 intersection (opposite The Farrier).
Grantham House is to the east of the church, and a National Trust property. Grantham has the country's only 'living' public house sign: a beehive of South African bees situated outside since 1830. Edith Smith Way is a road next to the Guildhall Arts Centre, on St Peter's Hill; it is named after England's first policewoman.
Sandon Road is named after Viscount Sandon, also the Earl of Harrowby. The Blue Pig, one of many Blue pubs, is situated on Vine Street, near the Church of St Wulfram. The nearby George Hotel (known as St Peter's Place, now the George Shopping Centre) was mentioned in Charles Dickens's novel Nicholas Nickleby.
Nearby are many historic houses including 17th-century Belton House (the Brownlows), early 19th-century Harlaxton Manor (the Gregorys), Stoke Rochford Hall (owned by the Turnors, and since 1978 is now the training centre of the NUT), and the 11th-century Belvoir Castle (the Manners), in Leicestershire.
( Grantham - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Grantham . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Grantham - UK

Justice4Jez Goldhanger/Tolleshunt D'Arcy Sea Wall path
This clip is part of the four and half mile route that the prosecution claimed Jeremy Bamber walked/cycled in the dark on the night of the murders on 7 August 1985. I believe the CPS story is that Jeremy telephoned Essex Police from White House Farm in Tolleshunt D'Arcy, impersonating his father, saying his 'daughter' had gone berserk with one of his guns, then walked/cycled back to his own home in Goldhanger and telephoned Essex Police and told them that his father had called him saying his sister had one of his guns. Oh, and all in less than ten minutes. Well I thinks that's how they tell it. Goldhanger church can be seen in the distance and Joyce's Farm House is around the half way mark between the two locations. The terrain remains virtually the same throughout the route. As can be observed, the path is very narrow with a steep drop either side and though the grass has now been cut along with the harvest - in the first few weeks of August it can grow to over two feet in height and spread across the path, making walking difficult let alone cycling. To view copies of police telephone logs and other documents supporting Jeremy's innocence visit
Haunting History of ~Hinxworth Place ~ North Hertfordshire~ England
Hinxworth is a village and civil parish in North Hertfordshire, England. It sits just off the Great North Road between Baldock and Biggleswade.
Hinxworth Place is a medieval manor house near Hinxworth, Hertfordshire, England.
Formerly the Manor of Pulters, building was started c. 1390. The construction is of clunch with loose flint filling cavities in the lower part of the walls. There is 16th century decoration painted directly onto the stonework in one of the upper rooms.
It was once owned by John Ward, son of Richard Ward, who was Lord Mayor of London for one month in 1484. After his death it passed to John Lambard, master of the Mercers' Company and alderman of London.
The house was inhabited at one time by Cistercian monks of the Monastery of Pipewell Northants.
The Drury and Andrews map of 1766 shows an L shaped building with three separate outbuildings with indication of an avenue and other plantings.
The large spring fed pond to the south of the house is one of the sources of the river Rhee which is a major tributary of the river Cam.
In the early part of the 20th century it was owned by Walter Sale who farmed 250 acres (1.0 km2) but in the 1930s was compulsorily purchased by the county council who divided the land into four smallholdings each of about 60 acres (240,000 m2). The Sales remained tenants until 1949 by which time, the house having fallen into dereliction, it was sold to a banker who formed a syndicate of London professionals and artists (including the actor Peter Copley) who renovated it.
Hinxworth Place was divided and sold during the 1960s and the larger part of the property is now the home and workplace of the sculptor John W Mills, a number of his works are displayed in the grounds.
Haunting of Hinxworth Place
Hinxworth Place has long been reputedly haunted. The main legend concerns the sound of thumps, screams, the sound of a baby crying, and of water coming from a pump - but this only takes place during stormy autumn evenings. The story behind the disembodied sounds is the accidental killing of a young boy by his nursemaid. Having dressed himself in a white sheet as a ghost for a joke, the child's terrified nurse screamed and struck at him with a poker, and he fell down a flight of stairs, the commotion awakening the family's baby. Servants attempted in vain to revive the boy by putting his head under the pump.
There have also been tales of ghostly monks - sometimes a procession, sometimes alone - vanishing through a doorway long since bricked up.
The Great North Road skirts the parish on the west and forms its south-west boundary. Not far from this road, on the borders of Hinxworth and Caldecote, Roman remains were discovered in about 1720 by workmen who were digging there for gravel with which to repair the road. These included several human bodies, urns, paterae and other objects, with a Danish or Dutch coin. In 1810 a further find of great interest was made in the parish of two rare Greek coins or medals, one of Mithridates King of Pontus, and the other of Perseus King of Macedonia, both very well preserved. Near the River Rhee in the north of the parish and not far from the camp at Arbury Banks or Harboro, and near the Ridgeway, a hoard of more than 500 Roman coins was discovered. Near them were found other Roman remains.
The village of Hinxworth lies a mile and a half to the east of the Roman road, with which it is connected by roads leading northwest and southwest, the former continuing to Ashwell. The 14th century St Nicholas' church and former rectory stand on the southeast of the angle formed by the road to Ashwell and that leading southwest to the Roman road, and the village lies a little to the northwest of the church. The medieval manor house Hinxworth Place is about half a mile southwest of the village.

Cambridge Surprise Major at Tetbury, Gloucestershire
Excerpts from a peal of Cambridge on this colourful Rudhall octave, unusual in that bells 2-8, dating from 1722, are all maiden and untuned; the treble presumably was, except that it was recast in 1803 by John Rudhall.
The tower, with its impressive 186 foot spire, was rebuilt in 1891, when the bells were hung in the current oak frame. They were rehung again in 1965 by John Taylor & Co, in memory of Sir Winston Churchill, at a cost of £1100 raised by public subscription
I was pleasantly surprised in that these were a lot nicer than I remembered from previous visits, with a good old fashioned growl to them.

Cambridge Surprise Major from Romsey Abbey
A very good course of Cambridge on the Beautiful old style 8 at Romsey Abbey.
Thanks to the Bellringers for making me welcome!
The Ringing Room is ENORMOUS!
The Tenor has a very nice boom and can be heard best at 4:24 when I sit on the window sill and point the camera outside. Also note at 4:20 there is a full scale dumbbell which can be connected to Abel if needed.
(8) 22-1-23 in C# Also a full sized training bell and a sanctus. The Bells are housed in an 8 sided bell chamber on top of the tower! click on this link and you will know what I mean

1-2 Thomas Mears 1791 6-1-15 (treble) 6-1-21 (second)
3 Mears & Stainbank 8-1-12
4 Thomas Mears 1791 9-1-8
5 Mears & Stainbank 1932 11-3-18
6 Thomas Mears 1791 12-0-12
7 Mears & Stainbank 1932 17-2-20
8 Thomas Mears 1791 22-1-23
The Bells were cast as an 8, in 1791 by Thomas Mears in the key of D Major. Tenor 24-0-8
In 1932, They were flattened the key of Db or C# (same thing!) and bells 3,5,7 were recast. Tenor 23-3-23
In 1976, They were re tuned again but still in the key of Db Tenor 23-1-23
More Recently, in 2007, Whites removed the Cannons of the Tenor come down from 23-1-23 to its current 22-1-23.
These old style bells form a very beautiful ring but are quite heavy round the middle. Plus, they go very well but you have to give the long pulls.
They also sound very good outside! You can here them outside when I look out on to the nave roof.
The Abbey is the largest church in Hampshire and is a member of the Greater Churches Group and is very beautiful.
