rrz518 visits Melbourne's St. Patrick's Cathedral November 2013. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Patrick (colloquially St Patrick's Cathedral) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, and seat of its archbishop, currently Denis Hart.
In 1974 Pope Paul VI conferred the title and dignity of minor basilica on it. In 1986 Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral and addressed clergy during his Papal Visit.
The cathedral is built on a traditional east-west axis, with the altar at the eastern end, symbolising belief in the resurrection of Christ. The plan is in the style of a Latin cross, consisting of a nave with side aisles, transepts with side aisles, a sanctuary with seven chapels, and sacristies. Although its 103.6-metre (340 ft) length is marginally shorter than that of St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, St Patrick's has the distinction of being both the tallest and, overall, the largest church building in Australia.

Ballarat is one of the greatest gold-mining towns on earth, and the mineral continues to provide most of the town's major attractions, even long after the end of the gold rush. It’s easy to see the proceeds of that boom time in the monumental Victorian-era buildings around the city centre. In terms of population Ballarat is the third largest inland city in Australia. Just months after Victoria was granted separation from the state of New South Wales, the Victorian gold rush transformed Ballarat from a small sheep station to a major settlement. Gold was discovered on 18 August 1851, and news quickly spread of rich alluvial fields where gold could easily be extracted. Unlike many other gold boom towns, the Ballarat fields experienced sustained high gold yields for many decades, which can be evidenced to this day in the city's rich architecture.
The city is famous for the 1854 tax-revolt known as the Eureka Rebellion. In response to this event the first male suffrage in Australia was instituted and as such Eureka is interpreted by some as the origin of democracy in Australia. The rebellion's symbol, the Eureka Flag, has become a national symbol and is held at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka in Ballarat.
Ballarat lies at the foothills of the Great Dividing Range in Central Western Victoria. Also known as the Central Highlands, it is named so because of its gentle hills and lack of any significant mountains that are more common in the eastern sections of the Great Dividing Range. The city lies within a mostly gently undulating section of the midland plains which stretch from Creswick in the north, to Rokewood in the south, and from Lal Lal in the south-east to Pittong in the west.
A significant heritage tourism industry has not grown substantially in Ballarat since the 1960s. Ballarat is most notable for the award-winning open-air museum known as Sovereign Hill, a recreated 1850s gold mining settlement opened in 1970. Sovereign Hill is Ballarat's biggest tourism drawcard and is consistently rated among one of the best outdoor museums in the world and continues to expand. Sovereign Hill accounts for over half a million of Ballarat's visitors and $40 million in tourism revenue.
Several businesses and attractions have capitalised on Ballarat's gold mining history. They include Kryal Castle (1972), Gold Rush Mini Golf (2002) featuring the Big Miner (2006) one of Australia's big things (although the original proposal appeared larger and for the miner to hold the Eureka Flag) at Ballarat's eastern entrance.
Other tourist attractions include the Eureka Centre; The Gold Museum, Ballarat; Ballarat Botanic gardens and Lake Wendouree; the Museum of Australian Democracy; the Ballarat Tramway Museum and Ballarat Ghost Tours and Ballarat Wildlife Park. A large number of Ballarat hotels, motels and restaurants service the tourism industry. The Ballarat Tourist Association is an industry based non-profit, membership organisation representing the city's tourism industry. Ballarat honours its rich history by hosting a number of annual festivals with historical and cultural focus including the Ballarat Begonia Festival, Ballarat Heritage Weekend and Ballarat Beat Rockabilly Festival.

Christus Rex Pilgrimage - Sunday Pontifical Mass for Christ the King 2015
Pontifical Solemn Mass in the Traditional Roman Rite celebrated for the feast of Christ the King in Bendigo Cathedral 2015. Holy Mass was offered by Bishop Basil Meeking, Emeritus Bishop of Christchurch, New Zealand. His Lordship, Bishop Tomlinson, Bishop of Sandhurst, presided in choir after having welcomed the pilgrims to his cathedral.
The Christus Rex pilgrimage is a three day walk from Ballarat to Bendigo, Australia inspired by the ND de Chrétienté (Paris to Chartres) pilgrimage. It takes places on the last weekend in October each year, for the feast of Christ the King.

Timeline of Cardinal George Pell's career and accusations MELBOURNE, Australia – An Australian jury has convicted Cardinal George Pell on charges that he sexually abused two choirboys in a cathedral when he was archbishop of Australia's second-largest city more than 20 years ago. Here is a timeline of key moments that led to the convictions. July 16, 1996: Auxiliary Bishop George Pell is appointed Archbishop of Melbourne. Within months he abused two choir boys at St. Patrick's Cathedral. March 26, 2001: Pell becomes Archbishop of Sydney. Oct. 21, 2003: Pope John Paul II makes Pell a cardinal. Feb. 25, 2014: Pope Francis appoints Pell to the powerful position of Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy. April 8, 2014: One of the molested choirboys dies of a heroin overdose without alleging the crime and having told his mother he had not been abused. Aug. 5, 2014: Victoria state police establish Task Force Sano to investigate allegations that arose from a state parliamentary inquiry into handling of child abuse by religious and other non-government organizations. Sano also investigates allegations made to a similar national inquiry. June 18, 2015: The surviving choirboy gives his first statement to Sano detectives outlining criminal allegations against Pell. Dec. 12, 2015: Australian media report that Pell has cancelled an appearance before an Australia government-commissioned inquiry into how the church and other institutions responded to child sexual abuse over decades. Pell said he could not fly back to Australia because of ill health. Dec. 23, 2015: Sano makes a public appeal for information relating to allegations of sexual offences in Melbourne while Pell was archbishop from 1996 until 2001.March 1, 2016: Pell begins testifying by video link for four days from Rome to the Australian child abuse inquiry. Pell was critical of how the church had dealt with pedophile clerics in the past but denied he had been aware of the extent of the problem. Pell said he did not immediately act when a boy raised abuse allegations against a cleric in the 1970s and should have done more. July 27, 2016: Pell issues a statement denying sexual abuse allegations made on an Australian Broadcasting Corp. current affairs program. Oct. 19, 2016: Santo detectives go to Rome and question Pell. Pell hears for the first time details of the choirboy's allegations. June 29, 2017: Police charge Pell by summons with multiple counts of historical sexual assault offenses, making him the most senior cleric to be charged in the church's abuse crisis. Pell denied the accusations and took an immediate leave of absence as Vatican finance czar to return to Australia to defend himself. July 26, 2017: Pell makes his first appearance in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on charges that he sexually abused multiple children in his home state of Victoria decades earlier. Details of the allegations were not made public. Pell was not required to enter pleas but he vowed through his lawyers to fight the allegations. May 1, 2018: A magistrate commits Pell to stand trial after dismissing half the charges against him during a month-long preliminary hearing. Pell pleads not guilty to all charges. May 2, 2018: A County Court judge rules Pell's charges will be separated into two trials. One would deal with charges relating to his time as archbishop in Melbourne in the 1990s and the other when he was a young priest in Ballarat in the 1970s.Aug. 15, 2018: Trial begins and runs for four weeks. Sept. 20, 2018: Jury discharged after failing to agree on a verdict following more than five days of deliberation. Nov. 7, 2018: Retrial begins. Dec. 6, 2018: Jury retires.
