Benedict Daswa: South Africa's first Catholic Martyr
South Africa's Catholic bishops will invite Pope Francis to visit the
country later this year to beatify Limpopo school teacher Benedict
Daswa as South Africa's first martyr.
Pope Francis issued a decree earlier on January 23, approving Daswa's beatification.
Bishop William Slattery, speaking on behalf of the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference, confirmed that Cardinal Wilfred Napier will personally invite the pontiff to South Africa when they meet next week.
Daswa, who will now be referred to as Blessed, was murdered by a mob on the evening of 2 February 1990 after he spoke out against a witch hunt.
He was born on June 16, 1946, in the village of Mbahé outside of
Thohoyandou in Limpopo.
A presentation by a congress of cardinals and bishops who examined the cause to beatify Daswa said the matter is of capital importance because of its “great relevance” as witchcraft is a problem found throughout Africa
“This phenomenon which causes fear and resignation everywhere does not even spare the Church in this part of the African continent.
By his courage and his fidelity to the Catholic faith, the Servant of
God Tshimangadzo Samuel Benedict Daswa is a model for all the peoples of sub-Saharan Africa”.
Daswa received his diploma as a primary school teacher and began teaching in the grade school at Ha-Dumasi in 1973.
Daswa's death came after a powerful thunderstorm on 25 January 1990 when lightning caused a number of houses in his village to be
destroyed by fire.
Village elders blamed a witch. The decision was taken to consult a
sorcerer from a nearby village to find out more about the cause.
Daswa told the others that thunder and lightning are natural phenomena, but his explanation was not accepted.
Daswa was beaten to death not far from his home.
Daswa's fame as a martyr soon spread throughout the region.
Each year, on the anniversary of his death, about 800 people make a pilgrimage to his tomb.

Catholic Youth SA: Ordination at Cathedral of Christ the King, Queenstown
Here, the Rev Deacon Tulani Gubula was ordained by his Lordship, Bishop Mpako, to be a priest of the Holy Roman Church. It was indeed a joyous celebration.
Please excuse the shakiness of the video. Also, for some weird reason, I covered the microphone during the Gloria. Apologies for that!

It is beautiful today that we are celebrating this Sunday in the atmosphere of the World Cup. And there is no doubt that when our countries started to lose one by one, oh, our hearts and our spirits really went down.

5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Father Victor Phalana, Sacred Heart Cathedral:
It is the World Cup, that is how it is. Full of surprises, you know, exciting, but at the same time full of disappointments. And I think somehow the hype around Bafana Bafana (South Africa's nickname) did not prepare us for the disappointment that was lurking, that was waiting for us.

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Father Victor Phalana, Sacred Heart Cathedral:
We have to admit we didn't qualify for the World Cup! (UPSOUND, laughter) We want to win the World Cup, but we never qualified even! We were knocked out very, very early in the World Cup, you remember that? We were knocked out, we never even qualified for the World Cup. But the mercy of God brought us into the World Cup. We must just enjoy it as long as it lasts. We must enjoy it and we must not put too much pressure on our boys, because we will give them nervous breakdown.

I'll be praying mainly for unity amongst the players, that the rest of the World Cup is as peaceful as it can be, as it started, until the end.
15. SOUNDBITE (English) Martha Mohale, church-goer:
Soccer is just fun. I mean, it's just a play it's a sport. I mean we shouldn't be angry, we shouldn't be emotional about it. And we know our team wasn't that strong after all, but it's our team after all and we have to support it.

STORYLINE:
South Africa's Catholic faithful were encouraged not to despair for their national football team on Sunday as they prayed for a crucial victory in the 2010 World Cup.
At Pretoria's Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on Sunday morning, worshippers packed the pews to hear Father Victor Phalana's football sermon.
The lesson from Father Phalana's pulpit was how to lose graciously as he prepared his congregation for the possibility that Bafana Bafana, the South African team's nickname, might not progress beyond the group stage of the tournament.
It is the World Cup cautioned Father Phalana, full of surprises, you know, exciting, but at the same time full of disappointments
Father Phalana was setting his congregation up for the possibility that South Africa might not continue to the next stage of the tournament, after drawing one game and losing another.
I think somehow the hype around Bafana Bafana did not prepare us for the disappointment that was lurking, that was waiting for us.
If they do not proceed any further in the tournament, South Africa would be the first World Cup hosts to be knocked out at such an early stage.
Father Phalana reminded the congregation that South Africa's national side had not actually qualified for the World Cup, but were playing by virtue of being the hosts.
We never even qualified for the World Cup said the priest but the mercy of God brought us into the World Cup. We must just enjoy it as long as it lasts.
South Africa could then qualify on goal difference.
