St Anne's Cathedral Belfast
I'm down at Belfast's St Anne's Cathedral. Opened in 1904 the Cathedral narrowly escaped and survived the 2WW 'Blitz', when German bombers flattened surrounding housing.
I'm just taking a wee informal dander inside to give you an idea what to expect if you come down too.

Funeral of Provisional IRA founding member Billy McKee held in Belfast
Billy McKee, who died on Tuesday aged 97, was a founding member of the Provisional IRA, and a staunch critic of Sinn Fein's embrace of non-violence. His funeral was held today at St Peter's Cathedral in West Belfast. Mr McKee's coffin was carried from the church in a gun carriage, with men wearing the military-style black berets associated with the IRA part of the procession. A eulogy was read at a memorial garden on the Falls Road, a short distance from the church. A mourner said: 'Billy remained steadfast to the end and had no regrets, despite all the hardship that he endured for his republicanism.'

Places to see in ( Belfast - UK )
Belfast is Northern Ireland’s capital. It was the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, which famously struck an iceberg and sunk in 1912. This legacy is recalled in the renovated dockyards' Titanic Quarter, which includes the Titanic Belfast, an aluminium-clad museum reminiscent of a ship’s hull, as well as shipbuilder Harland & Wolff’s Drawing Offices and the Titanic Slipways, which now host open-air concerts.
Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, the second largest on the island of Ireland, and the heart of the tenth largest Primary Urban Area in the United Kingdom. Belfast was a centre of the Irish linen, tobacco-processing, rope-making and shipbuilding industries: in the early 20th century, Harland and Wolff, which built the RMS Titanic, was the world's biggest and most productive shipyard. Belfast played a key role in the Industrial Revolution, and was a global industrial centre until the latter half of the 20th century. It has sustained a major aerospace and missiles industry since the mid 1930s. Industrialisation and the inward migration it brought made Belfast Ireland's biggest city at the beginning of the 20th century.
Today, Belfast remains a centre for industry, as well as the arts, higher education, business, and law, and is the economic engine of Northern Ireland. The city suffered greatly during the Troubles, but latterly has undergone a sustained period of calm, free from the intense political violence of former years, and substantial economic and commercial growth. Additionally, Belfast city centre has undergone considerable expansion and regeneration in recent years, notably around Victoria Square.
Belfast is served by two airports: George Best Belfast City Airport in the city, and Belfast International Airport 15 miles (24 km) west of the city. Belfast is a major port, with commercial and industrial docks dominating the Belfast Lough shoreline, including the Harland and Wolff shipyard, and is listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) as a global city.

Timelapse Europe and Scandinavida 2016
During my 2016 European travels, I set out to capture a time-lapse in every city I visited. This was in conjunction with my Jumping Through Europe video I made and published in 2016 (
The time-lapse footage however sat, unedited, on my computer for 2 years. So I decided to finally finish and publish it!
The process…
The footage is taken is with photographs, sped up to 15-20 frames per second. I took a photo, then moved one step, and repeated until I had around 150-200 photos around a building. I would focus on an anchor - a constant focal point in the centre of the shot, and pivot around it.
One of my favourite things about time-lapse photography is how the clouds move behind the buildings - I think it is a really cool effect.
Here is the end result - hope you like it!
The buildings in the video are:
Tower Bridge and Big Ben (London, England)
Belfast Town Hall (Northern Ireland)
Amalienborg (Copenhagen, Denmark)
Stockholm City Hall (Sweden)
Oslo Parliament and Skibotn Harbour (Norway)
Rovaniemi and Helsinki Orthodox Cathedral (Finland)
Tallinn Town Hall (Estonia)
Church of our Saviour on Spilt Blood, St Sophia Cathedral, St Basil’s, Red Square (Russia)
St Peter’s Church (Riga, Latvia)
Gediminas Castle (Vilnius, Lithuania)
Palace of Culture and Science (Warsaw, Poland)

Transformation of St Peter’s Church, Hereford
The decision was made by the Parochial Church Council to re-order the church building to enable it to be used for a variety of functions associated with the outreach works as well as the Sunday and Civic services. The three areas that the design was required to address were: providing an inviting entrance, which was accessible by all; providing an open plan, multi-use, flexible space that could be used for any activity; installing heating and services to enable the space to be warm, comfortable and useable.

NORTHERN IRELAND: 3000 PEOPLE AT RALLY IN BELFAST CATHOLIC STRONGHOLD
English/Nat
About three-thousand people have taken part in a peaceful rally in a Catholic stronghold of west Belfast in Northern Ireland.
They'd turned up to mark the death of Dermot McShane, who died during riots in Londonderry - the only person to die in almost a week of violence.
The crowd was addressed by Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams who asked Catholics to contain their anger and disappointment in order to give peace a last chance.
About three-thousand people gathered at the rally in a Catholic stronghold of west Belfast Sunday.
Carrying banners and black flags, they marked the death of not only Dermot McShane but also the Northern Ireland peace process.
35-year-old McShane was reportedly struck by a police vehicle during riots in Londonderry.
He was the only person to die so far in almost a week of violence in the province.
The gathering was addressed by Gerry Adams, the leader of Sinn Fein, which is the political wing of the Irish Republican Army.
He urged the Catholics of Northern Ireland to remain calm and give peace a chance.
But he stressed it was up to the British government - and to a lesser extent the Irish government - to put the process back on track.
SOUNDBITE:
John Major's government is not interested in making peace and he has reduced the peace process to a ruin and part of that has to be that the Irish government has to treat you people the same as they would treat any other citizen on this island. This is our country.
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Leader of Sinn Fein
Days of violence across Northern Ireland and the bomb attack on a hotel in Enniskillen have sparked new fears of a return to full-scale terrorist violence in the province.
The leader of a party linked to an outlawed pro-British loyalist or Protestant paramilitary group has warned the bombing could lead to the end of the loyalist ceasefire.

Heritage Open Days at St Peter's Church
DOZENS overcame the steep steps of St Peter’s Church tower to enjoy panoramic views of Tiverton thanks to Heritage Open Days this weekend.
The 15th century tower was opened on Saturday, September 10 as part of an annual event which sees thousands of buildings across the country showcase areas which may not always be on public display.
As well as the view at the top of the tower, visitors also had a chance to see the bells, the clock mechanism and hear about bell ringing.
Les Boyce, a bell-ringer in Tiverton said: “We like to link in with Heritage Open Day because we think what we do is very much in the spirit of the day, opening up something which isn’t normally open to the public and doing it for free.
“It’s a good opportunity for us to link with our local community and also explain about what we do as bell ringers. We like people to understand how we ring, why we do it so it’s our prime opportunity in the year to make contact with people outside the church.”
Mr Boyce said that more than 60 people took part in six tours throughout the day.
“It can be quite a lot of hard work, but it’s a lot of fun and a lot of enjoyment. We like meeting our public,” Mr Boyce added.
“It’s a lot of work for us to stage, but a lot of these people are neighbours of ours and it’s good for them to come and see what we do and why we do it.
“If anyone is interested in bell ringing they are very welcome to come along on a Tuesday night and meet us on practice night at 7:15pm.”
The church will open again next September but if a group is interested in visiting then the bell ringers will be prepared to lay on special tours.
St Mary's, oldest Catholic Church in Belfast 1784
I'm down near CastleCourt on Chapel Lane to visit the oldest Roman Catholic church in Belfast city. It is St Mary's Roman Catholic Church chapel Lane and it opened in 1784.
Who Built St Mary’s Church?
The Census in 1782 showed that there were 365 Catholics living in Belfast. At that time, there was no Catholic Church in the City. Catholic parishioners had been gathering at the mass rock at Stranmillis now Friar's Bush cemetery.
The Presbyterian and Church of Ireland communnities took up a special collection at their services – the Handsome Collection – and made a gift of the monies donated to build the first Catholic Church in Belfast – St Mary’s Chapel Lane. The generosity of the Presbyterian and Church of Ireland people of Belfast demonstrates the unprecedented religious tolerance of that time. Our still cherished and beautiful pulpit was donated to St Mary’s by the Vicar of Belfast, Canon Turner, of the Anglican Church in High Street in 1813.
It was on Sunday, 30th May 1784 that Mass was celebrated for the first time in the new church of St. Mary’s for the first time by Father Hugh O’Donnell, first Parish Priest of Belfast.
A sister church was built – St Mary’s on the Hill in Whiteabbey. And Father O’Donnell would mount his horse after saying Mass in Belfast and ride on horseback to Whiteabbey to say Mass there.
Italian Paintings
The two beautiful paintings hanging on either side of the altar in St Mary’s Church. On the left the painting depicts the death of St Joseph, and on the right the painting depicts the Annunciation.
italian1360
In 19th century Ireland there were not many artists and craftsmen. Italian artists emigrated to Ireland, and one such artist came to live in Belfast. He was a talented painter and muralist and had a studio close to Chapel Lane. He was commissioned to paint the works of art for the opening of the new church.
About six years ago the paintings were restored in situe by experts in art restoration, one of them from the Tate Gallery. The paintings could not be removed from the walls so all work was carried out on scaffolding. The painting of the Sacred Heart was restored at the same time – and the beauty of the paintings was revealed for all to admire. Some time ago, we had the honour to welcome to the church the granddaughter of the Italian artist.
