St Peters Chapel Bradwell On Sea
England's oldest standing church.
Cedd founded a Celtic style community at Othona, built his Cathedral of St Peters on the foundations of the Roman fort and was consecrated Bishop of Essex. In fact Cedd's Cathedral was built where the gatehouse of the fort had been - so it was built on the wall of the fort - hence the name - Saint Peter-on-the-Wall.

St Peter's Chapel, Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex
On Friday 10th of September 2010 the Ragged Ramblers went on an excursion to the wonderful chapel of St Peter, founded in 654AD by St Cedd. This was built on the site of the Roman coastal fort of Othona, on the head of the Blackwater estuary. The chapel was constructed from materials from this fort. On the day we visited the wind was buffetting around - as it is want to do in this starkly beautiful place. Inside the chapel, however, we were sheltered from the wind, and here we offer you a quick glimpse of this special place.

RAF Bradwell Bay & Ancient St. Peter-on-the-Wall Chapel Vlog
Our next vlog sees Liam visit the site of RAF Bradwell Bay - a Second World War airfield situated on the desolate Dengie Peninsula in Essex. We manage to locate its abandoned air raid shelters, runway, underground battle headquarters, and pillboxes, as well as the command tower renovated into a home. We then head out onto the marshes to the eerie ancient Saxon Chapel of St. Peter-on-the-Wall on the site of the Roman Othona fort.

A Journey to Bradwell-on-Sea
The ancient church at Bradwell on Sea- Haunted England
The Chapel is assumed to be that of Ythanceaster (Bede, Historia Ecclesiastica 3.22), originally constructed as an Anglo-Celtic Church for the East Saxons in AD 654 by St Cedd, astride the ruins of the abandoned Roman fort of Othona. The current structure was most likely built around 660-662, incorporating the Roman bricks and stones. Cedd travelled south from Lindisfarne to spread Christianity at the behest of Sigeberht the Good, then King of the East Saxons, in 653 and returned the next year having been ordained as a Bishop in order to build this Chapel. No further record exists of the Chapel's use until 1442 when the local clergy reported to the Bishop of London that it had been expanded slightly, with a small tower above the porch with a bell in it. However, they did not know of its origins and it was unusable, having been burnt. It was repaired and returned to regular use alongside the parish church in Bradwell-on-Sea until at least the Tudor period (16th century) before falling into disuse as a church again and being used as a barn—the position of the wide barn doorway, now filled in, can be seen on the south side of the nave. In 1920 it was restored and reconsecrated as a chapel. It is a Grade I listed building.
The church has featured in ghost hunts, namely Chris Dalton's Haunted Earth TV.
We visited it in August 2012. Three orbs were snapped by the camera in a series of shots. You may pick up these orbs in the stills forming this slideshow.
It is a lovely church to visit, in a beautiful position right on the sea shore.
Thank God that a church of this nature, history and age received a Grade I Listing. May it be forever preserved for posterity. Amen

St Peters-On-The-Wall Chapel, Bradwell (360)
The oldest church in Essex, and one of the oldest in the UK. Was built in the mid-600's in the Saxon era, on the site of a former Roman fort.
Being isolated and on the nearby coast, the chapel would have been easy pickings for marauding Vikings, and after the 1400/1500's was left in a state of ruin. Today it is a place of pilgrimage for a local Christian organisation.
The music being played here is by Aelfric, a Saxon music band (although is actually a much earlier pagan example of Saxon music.)
