LYDFORD VILLAGE CATHOLIC ANCIENT CHURCH, DEVON, UK
BEAUTIFUL, ANCIENT CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE VILLAGE OF LYDFORD, DEVON, UK
Ghost of the Grey Lady (St Petroc Chapel Lydford)
In the ancient West Devonshire village of Lydford, St Petroc's is a Norman church but is founded on an earlier settlement. A small timber church probably stood on the site, built about 650AD. It was dedicated in honour of St. Petroc, a 6th century Celtic missionary who came from Wales (via Ireland) and brought the Gospel to many parts of Devon and Cornwall. The timber church was probably burnt down by Danish raiders in 997. It was rebuilt in Norman times, enlarged in the 13th century, and in the 15th century the tower and the south aisle were added.
Notable features of the church include the Saxon or early Norman Font, made of Hurdwick stone, the pews with their fine carved bench-ends with figures representing the Prophets, Martyrs and Saints of the Holy Church, border ornamentation based on the Benedicite: 'All the works of the Lord', and portraying the flora and fauna of the West Country. The Watchmaker's Tomb (now sited inside the church to prevent further damage from the elements) bears a unique epitaph describing George Routleigh as if he were a clock himself.

Places to see in ( Okehampton - UK )
Okehampton is a town and civil parish in West Devon in the English county of Devon. Okehampton is situated at the northern edge of Dartmoor, Okehampton was founded by the Saxons. The earliest written record of the settlement is from 980 AD as Ocmundtune, meaning settlement by the Ockment, a river which runs through the town. Like many towns in the West Country, Okehampton grew on the medieval wool trade. Notable buildings in the town include the 15th century chapel of St. James and Okehampton Castle
Okehampton was the caput of a large feudal barony, which at the time of the Domesday Book was held by Baldwin FitzGilbert. After his death in 1090 the tenure of the barony is obscure for the next twenty years after which it was held by the heiress Maud d'Avranches until her death in 1173, which passed to her daughter, Hawise de Curci (died 1219), who married Reginald de Courtenay.
Okehampton's location at the edge of the moor means that it has always been a route centre. After years of uncertainty, the A30 trunk road was finally re-routed in 1988 to bypass the town, which had previously acted as a holiday traffic bottleneck at summer weekends. Okehampton railway station is on the former northerly rail route from Exeter to Plymouth via Tavistock. The line from Exeter remains open for freight traffic to and from Meldon Quarry, two miles (3 km) west of Okehampton. In summer, and at weekends throughout the year, the Dartmoor Railway operates a heritage railway service between Okehampton and Meldon Quarry.
Okehampton is surrounded by many smaller villages and towns including the hamlet of Stockley. Notable examples are the villages of South Zeal with its ancient burgage plots, granite thatched cottages and Dartmoor Folk Festival; Belstone, noted for its location on the very outskirts of Dartmoor and links to Agatha Christie's The Sittaford Mystery
( Okehampton - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Okehampton . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Okehampton - UK

The Grey Lady
We got attacked.
Just a Local Legend...
The Way of the Dead
The Way of the Dead, The Corpse Way, The Lichway. The Path across the moor has many names, but all symbolise it's intended purpose. During the 1200's an attempt was made to colonise the moor, this had some affect in a that a few farmsteads and settlements managed to eke out a living. Because however they were within the moor they had to attend services and bury their dead at the ancient parish church of St Petroc in Lydford, at one time the largest parish in England, this practise carried on until the early 1800's.
Our walk took us through Bellever Forest and it's Bronze Age cist burials, and on to the the gun powder mills before out into the open , cold and bleak moor. From here it took us into the pastures of the Tavy valley before we rose up again onto the downs, now a military firing range. Then down into the Lyd valley and to the ancient town of Lydford, most westerly of Alfred the Great's burh's (walled towns) and at one time a royal mint. Raided in 997 by a combined Viking and Cornish army that also destroyed a local Abbey.
Brother Joe and Wing Commander Jack decided to join me on this little adventure, did we get lost? Hell yes, did we care? Hell yes....I mean no. The Lichway is described as 12 - 17 miles on the internet, we covered 20...

The White Lady of Hurstmonceaux
Source and date: Mid-Sussex Times, 20 December 1910
Colonel Claude Lowther, the owner of Hurstmonceaux, has added to the list of ghostly happenings story on video
From ~ The Mammoth Book of True Hauntings~ By Peter Hainina
The corridors of the castle are said to be haunted by the ghost of a Grey Lady. Legend says the Grey Lady ghost is the spirit of a young girl from the 18th century who got lost in a remote spot of the castle and starved to death. Witnesses have reported seeing her ghostly apparition wandering the corridors of the castle as well as hearing her phantom sobbing. Another female ghost at the castle is that of the White Lady. The White Lady ghost has been witnessed walking in the grounds of the castle near to the moat. Legend says that she's the spirit of a young girl who Sir Roger Fiennes lure to the castle, abused and then murdered! Some witnesses visiting the castle have also reported seeing a very lifelike apparition of a woman riding a white donkey. Another ghost said to haunt the castle is that of a sleepwalking man! The most infamous ghost of Herstmonceux Castle is that of a nine foot tall drummer. His ghostly apparition has been witnessed walking along the battlements of the castle beating a drum. Some say the drummer ghost is of a soldier who was killed at Agincourt whilst others say it's the ghost of Lord Dacre. Lord Dacre had a beautiful young wife and would drum whilst on the castle's battlements to keep potential love rivals away from her. His wife soon got fed up with this eccentric behaviour and locked him up a tiny room at the castle where he was left to starve to death!
Herstmonceux Castle is one of the oldest significant brick buildings still standing in England. The castle was renowned for being one of the first buildings to use that material in England, and was built using bricks taken from the local clay, by builders from Flanders. It dates from 1441. Construction began under the then-owner, Sir Roger Fiennes and then, from his death in 1449, by his son, Lord Dacre. The emphasis is on grandeur and comfort instead of defence.
The first written evidence of the existence of the Herst settlement appears in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book which reports that one of William's closest supporters granted tenancy of the manor at Herst to a man named ‘Wilbert'. By the end of the twelfth century, the family at the manor house at Herst had considerable status. Written accounts mention a lady called Idonea de Herst, who married a Norman nobleman named Ingelram de Monceux. Around this time, the manor began to be called the Herst of the Monceux, a name that eventually became Herstmonceux.

A descendant of the Monceux family, Roger Fiennes, was ultimately responsible for the construction of Herstmonceux Castle in the County of Sussex. Sir Roger was appointed Treasurer of the Household of Henry VI of England and needed a house fitting a man of his position, so construction of the castle on the site of the old manor house began in 1441.
In 1541, Sir Thomas Fiennes, Lord Dacre, was tried for murder and robbery of the King's deer after his poaching exploits on a neighboring estate resulted in the death of a gamekeeper. He was convicted and hanged as a commoner, and the Herstmonceux estate was temporarily confiscated by Henry VIII of England, but was restored to the Fiennes family during the reign of one of Henry's children.
The profligacy of the 15th Baron Dacre, heir to the Fiennes family, forced him to sell in 1708 to George Naylor, a lawyer of Lincoln’s Inn in London. Bethaia Naylor, who became the heiress of Herstmonceux on the death of her brother's only daughter, married Francis Hare and produced son Francis, who inherited in turn his mother's property. The castle eventually came into the possession of Robert Hare-Naylor, who, upon the nagging of his second wife, Henrietta Henckell, followed the architect Samuel Wyatt’s advice to reduce the Castle to a picturesque ruin by demolishing the interior.Thomas Lennard, 17th Baron Dacre, was sufficiently exercised as to commission James Lamberts Jnr of Lewes (1741-1799) to record the building in 1776. The castle was dismantled in 1777 leaving the exterior walls standing and remained a ruin until the early 20th century.
Radical restoration work was undertaken by Colonel Lowther in 1913 to transform the ruined building into a residence and completed for Sir Paul Latham in 1933 by the architect, Walter Godfrey.
