The St. Symphorien Military Cemetery, Belgium
On this day, August 4, 1914, war was declared between Great Britain and Germany, marking the beginning of the First World War 104 years ago.
The graves of the first and last casualties of the war lay side-by-side at the St. Symphorien Military Cemetery in Belgium, the final resting place of over 500 Commonwealth and German soldiers. Amongst these casualties lays Private George Price of the Canadian Infantry, believed to be the last Commonwealth casualty of the war, who was killed on the 11th of November, 1918.

Mons - St Symphorien Cemetery (August 2014)
View around St Symphorien Military Cemetery on a sunny August morning. An incredibly beautiful and peaceful place.
A Guided Tour of St Symphorien Military Cemetery
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission's St. Symphorien Military Cemetery has a rather unique First World War story to tell – and not just that what are believed to be the first and last British soldiers to be killed in action on the Western Front are buried here.
This site is a favourite of the Commission’s Chief Historian, Dr Glyn Prysor – as he explains in this guided tour.

St Symphorien Military Cemetery Part 1 Tour of the Cemetery
St Symphorien Military Cemetery near Mons Belgium is a combined German and Commonwealth Cemetery from World War One. I have visited many many war cemeteries and this is in my top 5 favourites as it is both unusual in layout, beautiful to look out and contains some very significant graves.
Part 1 looks at the cemetery layout while Part 2 looks at some of the significant graves including the final resting place of the first and last British soldiers to die in World War One, lying just a few feet apart.
