PONTIFICAL HIGH MASS, SHRINE CHURCH OF ST THOMAS OF CANTERBURY & ENGLISH MARTYRS
PONTIFICAL HIGH MASS, SHRINE CHURCH OF ST THOMAS OF CANTERBURY & ENGLISH MARTYRS
On Sunday 24th September 2017 The Rt. Rev Bishop Michael Campbell O.S.A of Lancaster RC Diocese celebrated Pontifical High Mass to open the Shrine Church of St Thomas of Canterbury & English Martyrs, Preston.
The church will now be run by the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest and the Mass was celebrated in the presence of the Very Rev. Gilles Wach the Prior General and founder of the Instutute.
The move was welcomed by the parishioners of the parish as the Church was packed full on Sunday to witness the beautiful liturgy of the Mass. They are delighted the Church has been saved from closure and hope it thrives.

Canterbury and the Canterbury Cathedral - September 2019
I’ve been to a number of churches and sat through a number of different services before, but I think that this was the first time I’ve been to an Anglican one.
Crass history lesson: - The Cathedral was founded in 597 and between that date and the English Reformation it was Roman Catholic; - King Henry II had difficulties with one of the Arch Bishops and so after somewhat of a miscommunication (or was it?), four of his knights murdered the Arch Bishop, Thomas Beckett, in the Cathedral; - When the Roman Catholic church refused to annul the marriage of King Henry VIII to Catherine of Aragon in 1534, the King made himself the “Supreme Head on Earth of the Church of England”; - This event in combination with many others lead to a general Protestant Reformation, the decline of feudalism, the rise of Democracy, the printing and dissemination of the Bible, and the increase of literacy in the modern world …
I said it was crass.
The religious and political forces at play and the tensions between morality and absolutism is much more real in England than it is in North America. When I think of religion I hardly think of politics, but the relationship is woven into every corner of the Cathedral.
We visited on a Sunday and the services were going on while we toured parts of the Cathedral. The message was in English, which again was a first, as the other large Cathedrals that I have visited have been in France, Italy, or Spain. The music was beautiful and we even recognized the song, All Creatures of our God and King, which has made its way into the LDS Hymnal. The other music that was played was really amazing. I thought about cutting it into the video, but it didn’t quite work.
CATHOLIC CHURCH - Exemplary Excommunication / From the film Becket
Solemn excommunication scene from the classic film Becket, starring Richard Burton as Archbishop Thomas Becket, Peter O'Toole as King Henry II of England, and John Gielgud as King Louis VII of France. In this scene, Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket excommunicates Roger de Pont L'Évêque, the archbishop of York, along with Gilbert Foliot, the bishop of London, and Josceline de Bohon, the bishop of Salisbury.
Saint Thomas Becket (also known as Saint Thomas of Canterbury, Thomas of London, circa 1118 -- 29 December 1170) served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 by assassins believed to be operating for King Henry II of England. He is venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican denomination.
Following Becket's death, the monks prepared his body for burial and discovered that he had worn a hairshirt under his archbishop's garments—a sign of penance.
Not long after, the faithful throughout Europe began venerating Becket as a martyr, and in 1173 — barely three years after his death on 21 February 1173 — he was canonised by Pope Alexander III in St. Peter's Church in Segni.
On 12 July 1174, in the midst of the Revolt of 1173--1174, Henry humbled himself with public penance at Saint Thomas's tomb as well as at the church of St. Dunstan's, which became one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in England.
Becket's assassins fled north to Knaresborough Castle, which was held by Hugh de Morville, where they remained for about a year. They were not arrested and neither did Henry confiscate their lands, but he failed to help them when they sought his advice in August 1171. Pope Alexander excommunicated all four. Seeking forgiveness, the assassins traveled to Rome and were ordered by the Pope to serve as knights in the Holy Lands for a period of fourteen years.
If the Catholic hierarchy of today took their Faith and their pastoral duties seriously, as did Saint Thomas Becket, many in high places would not be committing so many abuses and inflicting so much harm to the Church and to Humanity. Politicians such as U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, and others, rabid supporters of the crime of abortion and aberrosexual pseudo marriage, would have been unmasked and shown as the frauds and corrupt officials that they are.

Leap of Faith: Church of England en route to extinction
Hand in hand with the British Monarchy, the Church of England has been a symbol of the UK for centuries. And while the Church still enjoys many unique political and financial privileges - it's current state is less than secure, as RT's Polly Boyko found out.
