Beautiful St. Aloysius Chapel - Mangalore, India
:: Beautiful St. Aloysius Chapel - Mangalore, India ::
St Aloysius College was built in 1882. The southern wing of the building formed the Chapel as a place of prayer for students. The Chapel built in 1885 by Rev Father Joseph Willy, is a replica of world renowned Sistine Chapel at Rome. The main part of this chapel is a large hall, which is called the nave. On either side of the nave are the two aisles. The raised platform is called sanctuary. Touching the wall of the sanctuary is the main alter.
The paintings on the ceiling are canvases, and on the walls, are frescoes. While every painting has its own special appeal, some have a special significance. The Chapel is primarily a place of prayer where people can commune with God. The paintings which adorn it are primarily meant to help us to pray. Their artistic value can be best appreciated in an atmosphere of prayerful silence.
Bro. Antonio took only two and a half years to complete the work in Mangalore. Paints were not available locally and Europe was too far to import them. But Bro. Antonio prepared the paints himself using vegetable dyes. One can only wonder how he managed to put up the high scaffoldings to go up to the ceiling. Even with the help of steel structures it was a formidable task to erect scaffolding when the paintings were restored by the INTACH ICI of Lucknow. It took 7 specialists four years to renovate the paintings.
The Department of Posts, Govt of India brought out a Commemorative Stamp on St Aloysius College Chapel Paintings on 12 January 2001.

Sethukarnan's Mangalore Tour St.Aloysius Chapel, Pilikula Park & Artisans Village 27 Aug 2011.wmv
St. Aloysius College Chapel is situated in the heart of the Mangalore city on the lighthouse hill. The Church was built during 1899-1900. Its stunningly beautiful interior is comparable to the Sistine chapel in Rome. The special beauty of the chapel is the wonderful series of frescos and oil paintings that virtually cover every inch of the interior walls and roof executed by Bro.Antonio MoscheniS.J.(1854-1905) trained in Italy.
He was born in Italy on January 17, 1854. He mastered the art of painting, later went to Rome to study the masterpieces at Vatican, and in 1889, took up religous work. His religious superiors sent him to Mangalore to the Chapel of St. Aloysius College. It took him a little over two years to cover the 600 sq.m. of the walls with frescos and 400 sq.m. of the ceilings of the Chapel with oil paintings on canvas. The work of restoration done by INTACH - ICI Lucknow from 1991 to 1994 has restored the frescos and oil paintings to their original glory.

TRANSCRIPT:
After we left the Maldives, we started to see that there was pollution in the air and once we hit the shores of India, you could definitely see it.
As a result of all the chemicals in the air, we had beautiful sunsets, I must say.
We only have two stops in India and our first stop is Mangalore, and it is located in southern India.
India is a growing country both in population and economically. In fact, India will soon surpass the population of China.
In Southern India, 55% of the population is Hindu, 24% Muslim, 19% Christian and .003% Jewish.
Our first stop this morning was to see a Hindu temple complex. It is very popular here for men and women to put a red dot or a line between their eyebrows called a “bindi” and as you can see I had a bindi on my forehead.
Cows are still considered sacred and from time to time throughout the city, you would see some cows roaming the street.
Once in the temple complex you would see many, many different temples and buildings and they would house different deities. Shiva is the major deity and God and he is considered the destroyer.
But if you have certain issues or problems or likes, you may have other deities that you would go and pray to.
Next, we went to Saint Aloysius Catholic Church and school where this is considered the Sistine Chapel of Southern India. Antonio Moscheni was the artist that painted all these frescoes.
He was noticed at a very young age as having great talent and even went to the Vatican to study and look at all the frescoes that was done by Michael Angelo.
He was sent down to Mangalore.
He had painted other churches in Italy and was sent to Mangalore to paint this church, which took him about two years to paint all these frescoes.
Our next stop was a cashew factory and India exports a significant amount of cashews throughout the world. This process takes a lot of steps and now I can understand why cashews are so expensive!
Interestingly enough, there is a large fruit and then at the bottom of the fruit on the outside is the cashew nut or the seed of this fruit.
Can you think of another fruit that has the seeds on the outside?
If you thought of the strawberry, you were right.
I asked the guide, what do they do to the fruit after they take off the seed and they said they make wine out of it.
When processing the cashews, they are steamed so that the shell of this nut cracks easily, which a machine does and then a lot of the work is done by hand and there are many women at this factory.
The factory does take care of their children and at lunchtime they can spend some time with them. But I did ask the guide and I said,
“How much are these ladies paid a day?”
The work is done by piecework. I saw a large bowl of cashews that went over to be weighed and then they recorded the weight.
To my surprise, the average woman here only makes about $8 per day.
Mangalore is quite a bustling city and the chief port for its state, Karnataka located about 220 miles west of the state capital, which is Bangalore.
I had spoken earlier about the air pollution, but there's also a lot of trash all over India and it's interesting to me to find out that Mangalore was declared the 8th cleanest city in India with Delhi being the dirtiest and the most polluted.
Another fun fact is Mangalore was ranked India's 13th place in top business destinations in the country. There are twenty five hundred languages. That’s two thousand, five hundred with 22 official languages!
The guide showed me their currency and on the currency they actually say the names of 15 of the different official languages. Hindi is the official business language that brings all these cultures together, here in India.
Next we will be going to Cochin in the state of Kerala, our last stop in India.
In closing, my wish for you is that you will love abundantly, protect your health, and be adventurous for life. You are beautiful. Let your light shine, Aloha!
