Aysgarth Falls - Yorkshire Dales - Waterfalls
This is our visit to Aysgarth Falls in the Yorkshire Dales. You can also see many other videos on my Youtube Channel at
Aysgarth Falls are a triple flight of waterfalls, surrounded by forest and farmland, carved out by the River Ure over an almost a one-mile stretch on its descent to mid-Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales of England, near the village of Aysgarth. The falls are quite spectacular during wet weather, as thousands of gallons of water cascade over the series of broad limestone steps.
Aysgarth Falls have attracted visitors for over 200 years; Ruskin, Turner and Wordsworth visited, all enthusing about the falls' outstanding beauty. The upper and middle fall was featured in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
In addition to the falls, there are walks which wind through the wooded valley, offering views of the river and falls. Wild flowers appear in the spring and summer, and wild birds, squirrels and deer may also be seen. Nearby is St Andrew's church, which has a large churchyard, reputed to be the largest in England. The church has a medieval painted wooden screen rescued from the destroyed Jervaulx Abbey.
The name originates from old Norse, meaning the open space in the oak trees.
It was featured on the television programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the North.

Aysgarth Falls, Wensleydale, Yorkshire
Aysgarth Falls is an impressive stretch of the River Ure in Wensleydale and has been a tourist attraction for over 200 years. There is a National Park Centre, café and car park at Aysgarth Falls. The famous scene in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves was filmed on the upper falls. The waterfalls are at their most dramatic after heavy rain, well worth a visit. I can thoroughly recommend the Aysgarth Falls Hotel for an excellent lunch.

The Planets is perhaps one of the most popular orchestral works ever written by a British composer and has been extensively used by TV and film. Holst as a result has often been underestimated as a composer and most of his other many works remain relatively unknown. This caused Holst heartache and frustration and the success of the Planets in no way suggests that his other works are in any way inferior.
The Planets was conceived as an orchestral suite in 7 movements and was originally given the working title “Seven Pieces for Large Orchestra”. Holst was influenced by a concert he attended of Schoenberg's “Fünf Orchesterstücke”. There are also influences in the orchestration from his contemporary composers such as Debussy, Stravinsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov.
Holst initially composed all the movements for two pianos (except Neptune which he wrote for organ as he felt the piano was too percussive) and then with the assistance of two pianists playing the work wrote in his orchestration ideas. The two piano version is still occasionally performed.
The Planets is written from the point of view of astrology rather than astronomy – hence Earth is not represented and each movement is given a title including the astrological view of each body.
In the orchestral version Neptune includes two female choruses, each in three parts (soprano, alto, alto) and the premiere included singers from Morley College and St. Paul’s Girls School Hammersmith. Holst taught at both institutions and it was at St. Paul’s Girls School, where he was director of music, that the four hand duet version of the score was discovered in a cupboard by pianist John York, their current director of music.
The score was signed by Holst and prepared with the help of his regular assistants at the school Nora Day and Vally Lasker.
John & Fiona York prepared an edition for publication of, sadly no longer available, and recorded the work for Nimbus Records.
Robert Hunter, one of the pianists in this video, studied with John York.

“Where Shams-I Tabriz walks, the footprints become notations of music and the holes you fall through into space.” Rumi (translated by Coleman Barks)
Sufi Suite was composed during summer of 2005 and was first performed in 2006, at Roerich Museum in New York City.
Since its premiere, Sufi Suite has been played in Boston, Moscow, Mexico, and Australia. In 2007, it was included in Sufi Soul CD, which was described by Heather Kurzbauer in The Strad Magazine as “deep, exploratory and richly rewarding” and was featured on Amsterdam’s Radio 4.
Sufi Suite was inspired by Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī poetry.
The first movement, After Rumi, is an arabesque-like prelude.
The second movement, OM, is more substantial in size and combines vocal chanting (sang by the performer) and varied and intricate rhythms of a Sufi dance.
The work asks for an alteration of the cello’ tuning, i.e. scordatura: G-D-G-C which makes Sufi Suite pair well with J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite in C Minor.
