Victoria Travel Guide - Canada Happy Moments

Victoria is the capital of the province of British Columbia, Canada. It is located near the southern tip of Vancouver Island. It is a medium sized and beautiful city. Nicknamed the Garden City for Butchart Gardens and much green space. It is also said to lie within the world's most northern Mediterranean climate. Victoria has long traded on its British affiliations. But while the fish-and-chips remain first-class and summer cricket games still enliven Beacon Hill Park, the days when Victoria was more British than Britain are long gone. In Victoria 2.0, the food culture embraces fusion, the beer leans toward craft brews and the abundance of bicycles seems to have more in common with Holland than England.

Compared to the glassy skyscrapers of Vancouver, Victoria is more laid-back and low-rise. On balmy summer days, a distinct holiday atmosphere takes over as people pile off the ferries to escape the mayhem of the mainland and forget work. Sure, Victoria might have become trendier and more sophisticated in recent years but, in pace and essence, it remains comfortingly old-fashioned.

Walking is an easy, free, and fun way to explore the entire downtown area. Make your way from hotel to museum to shops; stop for coffee; stroll along the harborside; grab a pint and some fish-n-chips. Rental Cars are available for those who need them. There are seven different car rental locations in Victoria. All major companies such as Avis, Hertz, Budget, and Enterprise, are available. Biking Victoria is one of the most bike-friendly cities in Canada, which may have something to do with the very mild winters. There are many places to rent bikes.

Victoria has the second-highest number of restaurants per capita of all North American cities! The waterfront tourist area is home to a wide variety of restaurants and eateries, including several English-style pubs. Try the fish and chips or shepherds pie for a taste of England in Canada. For a more eclectic Victoria experience, check out the classy restaurants that surround Chinatown, offering interesting west-coast fusion and asian dishes.

There are a number of areas to stay in Victoria with the most popular location being downtown. Other options include Sidney, the West Shore and the Upper Harbour district. The Upper Harbour district is gaining in popularity for its close proximity to downtown, quiet environment, and typically, the most value oriented accommodation in the city with the lowest nightly room rates.

Named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and, at the time, British North America, Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest, with British settlement beginning in 1843. The city has retained a large number of its historic buildings, in particular its two most famous landmarks, Parliament Buildings (finished in 1897 and home of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia) and the Empress hotel (opened in 1908). The city's Chinatown is the second oldest in North America after San Francisco's. The region's Coast Salish First Nations peoples established communities in the area long before non-native settlement, possibly several thousand years earlier, which had large populations at the time of European exploration. Known as The Garden City, Victoria is an attractive city and a popular tourism destination with a thriving technology sector that has risen to be its largest revenue-generating private industry. Victoria is in the top twenty of world cities for quality-of-life, according to Numbeo.

Gorgeous Historic Bed & Breakfast Built in 1842

The guest rooms and four inviting public parlors dwell within a Greek Revival antebellum house and an adjoining Victorian house that share a quaint courtyard and gardens. The nineteen guest rooms, parlors, and library are tastefully designed with fine English antiques and paintings, oriental carpets, tapestries and elaborate draperies. The staff at the 1842 Inn take pampering to the level of an art form and offer an evening hospitality hour featuring complimentary hors d'oeuvres and beverages from an attended cash bar daily. A full breakfast is also included. Rated as One of the Top Romantic inns in the Country by American Historic Inns, The 1842 Inn is a four-diamond AAA and American Bed & Breakfast Association award winner. One of the finest historic inns in the South, The 1842 Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to be a member of Historic Hotels of America. The house, built in 1842 by John Gresham, is a fine specimen of Greek revival architecture. Mr. Gresham, a former mayor of Macon, attorney, judge and cotton merchant lived in the home until 1900 when it was purchased by the B. F. Adams family.
The Adams family made significant changes, which include extending the front porch and erecting columns as well as installing parquet floor and Victorian tile insets on the fireplaces. The Victorian Cottage, which sits across the courtyard from the main house, was moved onto the almost 2 acre property to supplement the main house in 1983. The Cottage consists of nine fully furnished guest rooms with 12-foot ceilings, original heart of pine flooring and a large front porch overlooking the courtyard.
The inn now consists of nineteen guest rooms, hospitality parlors, service facilities, as well as a courtyard and porches for entertaining.

New Dock for Point Ellice Heritage House

Minister Steve Thomson arrived by harbour ferry to officially open the new dock and gangway at Victoria's Point Ellice House. The house was built 151 years ago and holds one of North America's largest collections of Victoriana. Other completed projects on the site include a new roof for the historic house, restoration of external walls, and the addition of fencing and handrails as well as considerable work to the site's beautiful gardens.

Fort Lennox - Wonders await you across the river!

This old British fort is located on Île aux Noix, in the middle of the Richelieu River. No bridge connects this island, with its fabulous destiny. There isn't any choice: you have to leave your vehicle behind. The boat is how you get there! The children will love it. The crossing takes five minutes. Just long enough to cross the time barrier and tread the ground of an outstanding site.

Located a few kilometres from the Canada-U.S. border, the fort was built from 1819 to 1829. It consists of defensive works and of several masonry buildings of outstanding beauty. The site as a whole had the aim of protecting the colony from an eventual American invasion along the Richelieu River.

Residential School Testimony Continues in Cowichan Valley

DUNCAN - The stories are horrifying , but a generation of residential school survivors are ready to speak out.

Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission has continued its tour of Vancouver Island offering a safe place to speak out in the Cowichan Valley. Today hundreds packed a First Nations Long House to support a group of former students who underwent extreme physical, mental, and sexual abuse inside BC residential schools.

One mans story brought the entire audience to tears when he spoke of repeated sexual assault inside a Vancouver Island residential school. The former students testimonial took an even more grim turn when he spoke of how the teacher also targeted his little brother. My bother didn't cooperate the now senior citizen told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission officials, so he ran towards the bedroom window and jumped out of it.

Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission are compiling a complete history of the residential school era in hopes that knowledge of the horrific events that occurred inside many of the facilities will ensure they never happen again.

The tour will now shift south to Victoria for a regional event next month.

It seems important the house is mentioned, as though the home and the man were so entwined it warranted mention beside him. With some work and love it could be beautiful again.
