Members of Ukraine's Orthodox Christian community are attending a Christmas Day church service in Kyiv's St. Volodymyr's Cathedral.
The Christian Orthodox Church uses the Gregorian calendar and celebrates Christmas 13 days after most of the Western world, which uses the Julian calendar.

Mission to Ukraine 7/17/2007 - St Sophia's Cathedral, Kiev
This was my big day in Kiev. I wanted to take a lot of video with my digital camera. Although I have similar analog video from 1991, 1997 and 2000, it's not the same quality. You can see some of these on the Predvestnik web page.
I took the metro to Kreshatik and switched stations -- went two stops north -- when I came out of the underground, I was lost. It turned out that I was not far from where I wanted to be, but I took a roundabout way of getting there. My theory was that I should find the Dneiper by walking due east and than walk south along the river until I found McDonald's. This took about an hour. I finally found the tramline that goes up a steep hill to St Sophia's square.
I walked around Sophia's monastery and climbed the bell tower. I took video from the top and figured out the route I'd have to take to get to Andrivsky's street. There is a huge Hyatt with a glass front in that old square now-- horrible! I was thirsty all day, but waited for a few hours to until I found a place to buy water. This turned out to be a big mistake. I had suffered some dehydration and I paid for it later on.
I walked down Andrivsky's street. I had never been inside the old cathedral before, so that was interesting. My church in Sanford, Florida is St. Andrew's Chapel, so the connection is interesting. According to legend, the Apostle Andrew preached to the Scythians in this region. Supposedly, he stood on this hill and prophesied that a great city would be built on that spot.
I bought some Ukrainian folk souvenirs for my wife, which we have in our kitchen now. I ate at McDonalds and found the value meal cost about five dollars, which is about the same in the United States. Still it was packed with people.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Kiev Patriarchate (UOC-KP; Ukrainian: Украї́нська Правосла́вна Це́рква – Ки́ївський Патріарха́т (УПЦ-КП), translit. Ukrayínsʹka Pravoslávna Tsérkva – Kýyivsʹkyy Patriarkhát (UPTs-KP)) is one of the three major Orthodox churches in Ukraine, alongside the Ukrainian Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (which is a part of the Russian Orthodox Church), and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC).As a jurisdiction, the Kiev Patriarchate is unrecognised by the canonical Eastern Orthodox churches and is regarded as a schismatic grouping by the Moscow Patriarchate. Nevertheless, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew in early September 2018 indicated that the Church of Constantinople does not recognise the Moscow Patriarchate's claim to ecclesiastical jurisdiction over the region of today's Metropolis of Kiev; the decision by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of 11 October 2018 formally abrogated the legal consequences of the handover of the Kiev metropolis to Moscow effected in 1686, and thus de jure restored its ecclesiastical jurisdiction over Ukraine recognizing the bishops of the Kiev Patriarchate, along with those of the other two major jurisdictions, as canonical bishops of the Ecumenical throne of Constantinople.The St. Volodymyr's Cathedral in Kiev is the patriarchal cathedral of the UOC-KP. The primate of the church is Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), who was enthroned in 1995. Filaret (Denysenko) was excommunicated by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1997, but the Synod and Sobor of the UOC-KP do not recognize this action.
Following the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople of 9–11 October 2018 Filaret (Denysenko) was canonically reinstated and the decision was made to proceed with the granting of autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine. As a consequence, the Kiev Patriarchate and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church are planning to merge with pro-independence bishops of the Moscow Patriarchate into an independent (autocephalous) Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is expected to receive a tomos—an ecclesiastical decree on autocephaly by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

The Moscow–Constantinople schism, also known as the Orthodox Church schism of 2018, is a schism which began on 15 October 2018 when the Russian Orthodox Church unilaterally severed full communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. This was done in response to a decision of the synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on 11 October 2018 to move towards granting independence (autocephaly) to the orthodox Church of Ukraine, to reestablish the stauropegion of the Ecumenical Patriarch in Kiev, to revoke the legal binding of the letter of 1686 which led to the Russian Orthodox Church establishing jurisdiction over the Ukrainian Church, and to lift the excommunications which affected clergy and faithful of two unrecognized Orthodox churches in Ukraine.Those two churches (the UAOC and the UOC-KP) were competing with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) and were, and still are, considered schismatics b ...

The Detroit Race Riot broke out in Detroit, Michigan in June 20, 1943, and lasted for three days before Federal troops restored order. The rioting between blacks and whites began on Belle Isle on June 20, 1943 and continued until the 22nd of June, killing 34, wounding 433, and destroying property valued at $2 million.
In the summer of 1943, in the midst of World War II, tensions between blacks and whites in Detroit were escalating. Detroit's population had grown by 350,000 people since the war began. The booming defense industries brought in large numbers of people with high wages and very little available housing. 50,000 blacks had recently arrived along with 300,000 whites, mostly from rural Appalachia and Southern States.[2]
Recruiters convinced blacks as well as whites in the South to come up North by promising them higher wages in the new war factories. Believing that they had found a promised land, blacks began to move up North in larger numbers. However, upon arriving in Detroit, blacks found that the northern bigotry was just as bad as that they left behind in the deep South. They were excluded from all public housing except Brewster Housing Projects, forced to live in homes without indoor plumbing, and paid rents two to three times higher than families in white districts. They also faced discrimination from the public and unfair treatment by the Detroit Police Department.[3] In addition, Southern whites brought their traditional bigotry with them as both races head up North, adding serious racial tensions to the area. Job-seekers arrived in such large numbers in Detroit that it was impossible to house them all.
Before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. government was concerned about providing housing for the workers who were beginning to pour into the area. On June 4, 1941, the Detroit Housing Commission approved two sites for defense housing projects--one for whites, one for blacks. The site originally selected by the commission for black workers was in a predominantly black area, but the U.S. government chose a site at Nevada and Fenelon streets, an all-white neighborhood.
To complete this, a project named Sojourner Truth was launched in the memory of a black Civil War woman and poet. Despite this, the white neighborhoods opposed having blacks moving next to their homes, meaning no tenants were to be built. On January, 20, 1942, Washington DC informed the Housing Commission that the Sojourner Truth project would be for whites and another would be selected for blacks. But when a suitable site for blacks could not be found, Washington housing authorities agreed to allow blacks into the finished homes. This was set on February 28, 1942.[4] In February 27, 1942, 120 whites went on protest vowing they would keep any black homeowners out of their sight in response to the project. By the end of the day, it had grown to more than 1,200, most of them were armed. Things went so badly that two blacks in a car attempted to run over the protesters picket line which led to a clash between white and black groups. Despite the mounting opposition from whites, black families moved into the project at the end of April. To prevent a riot, Detroit Mayor Edward Jeffries ordered the Detroit Police Department and state troops to keep the peace during that move. Over 1,100 city and state police officers and 1,600 Michigan National Guard troops were mobilized and sent to the area around Nevada and Fenelon street to guard six African-American families who moved into the Sojourner Truth Homes. Thanks to the presence of the guard, there were no further racial problems for the blacks who moved into this federal housing project. Eventually, 168 black families moved into these homes.[5] Despite no casualties in the project, the fear was about to explode a year later.[6]
In early June 1943, three weeks before the riot, Packard Motor Car Company promoted three blacks to work next to whites in the assembly lines. This promotion caused 25,000 whites to walk off the job, effectively slowing down the critical war production. It was clear that whites didn't mind that blacks worked in the same plant but refused to work side-by-side with them. During the protest, a voice with a Southern accent shouted in the loudspeaker, I'd rather see Hitler and Hirohito win than work next to a nigger.
