The Train - Excerpts - St Aidan's N.S. Monasteraden, Co. Sligo
St Aidan's N.S., Monasteraden has put together a film telling the story of the Ballaghaderreen-Kilfree Train. A fine piece of work. Copies of DVD are available. A few excerpts are included here. The actual film is 32 minutes long and features some rare footage of the train, including its last journey in 1963 as well as interviews with people who worked on the train, the railway and others who have fond memories of this great community service. Quality reduced in this clip but hopefully give a flavour. Well done to all involved. Contact me if you want any further information. Thanks.

Testimony of Mags | Bessborough | Genocide Inquiry Session 005
Mags at age 15 was in the Sacred Heart Bessborough Centre in 1967.
2:00 They changed my name. The shame started from there. But it was to get a lot worse.
3:40 One Sunday morning, off I went. Out through the farm onto the Limerick Road. I absconded.
6:20 We were like the chain gang, we just weren't cuffed to each other.
8:00 It took three days for this little baby and I had to have an episiotomy. There was no pain relief whatsoever. I was pretty broken.
9:14 Then a young doctor stitched me up, he didn't talk to me, he didn't look at me me
11:50 I gave him to the nun in the orphanage. But I was determined I was coming back to get him.
12:15 I gave him to the nun in the orphanage and I remember being very traumatised by it, but I was determined I was going to come and get him
13:28 I would honestly say I had PTSD. I broke out in psoriasis all over and I had to be hospitalised
14:22 I went missing I did not want my parents to know where I was, but they tracked me down & forced me to sign the papers
15:00 It was the Sligo adoption agency, St Attracta's
19:00 After I came back to Ireland I used to try socialise but my confidence was gone. I always feel like my teenage years were stolen from me
21:40 I use to think I was a bad person, but then in the 90's when I got a bit of education for myself, I realised there was a huge injustice done to me. Then I had surgery & was very ill, I thought how terrible it would be if I died & never saw my son
23:17 I traced him, he was very anxious to see me, the adoption agency wanted to go through a whole rigmarole for us to go through counselling but we bypassed all that and just got on with it
29:14 We have a nice relationship, see the mother & child bond is broken, that was the grief as well, you can't repair it
32:00 I often think if I had committed murder I would not have got such a sentence
