Top best places to visit in Derry, Northern Ireland
Derry or, more officially, Londonderry is the second largest city of Northern Ireland.
The city is also nicknamed the Maiden City by virtue of the fact that its walls were never breached despite being besieged on three separate occasions.
Derry is the only remaining walled city in Ireland that is completely intact and it is one of the finest examples of a walled city in Europe.
There are many historical buildings that can be visited when walking down the City Walls.
St Columb’s Cathedral is the mother church of the Ireland Diocese of Derry.
Situated along the City Walls, First Derry Presbyterian Church has recently been re-opened and is now used as a place of worship.
Another admirable church of great importance is the neo-Gothic St Augustine’s Church.
Located within the historic walls Tower Museum, the main museum of the city, tells the story of the city from prehistory to the present.
Right in the center of Derry is a monument dedicated to the citizens who lost their lives during World War I, the Diamond War Memorial.
In the Bogside neighborhood is a historical landmark, a free-standing gable wall, that commemorates Free Derry.
In the same area of the Free Derry Museum is the Bloody Sunday Memorial.
But the Bogside is best known for its large political murals found on the walls of Free Derry Corner.
A more contemporary sculpture in the city, known as Hands Across the Divide, serves as a symbol of the two communities coming together.
Outside of the city walls are many important landmarks worth visiting, such as:
St Eugene’s Cathedral, where there is the Roman Catholic minster.
St Columba’s Church Long Tower, the Roman Catholic Church with the beautiful altar.
And the Guildhall, a large hall where many social and political events have been held.
The Guildhall is located between City Walls and the River Foyle.

UK: LONDONDERRY: 23RD ANNIVERSARY OF BLOODY SUNDAY
English/Nat
Thousands of people have marched through the streets of Londonderry in Northern Ireland to mark the 23rd anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when 13 civilians were killed by British soldiers.
The people also gathered to hear Gerry Adams, president of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA, condemn the British Government for moving too slowly on the peace process.
Five thousand mainly Catholic nationalists took to `the streets of Londonderry Sunday, the same streets where 13 civilians were killed by British paratroopers 23 years ago.
In January 1972, British paratroopers confronted pro-Republican protesters, fatally shooting the unarmed civilians.
The tragedy has since been known as Bloody Sunday and has been a rallying point for the I-R-A.
Sinn Fein President, Gerry Adams, was among today's peaceful marchers.
He later addressed the crowd and called for the healing process to begin between Republicans, who want a united Ireland and loyalists who want Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom. .
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We want to see a process of forgiveness of reconciliation. And I have acknowledged publicly, the hurt the Republicans have inflicted. I have acknowledged that as have others. But the Unionists also must acknowledge the hurt that they have inflicted and the Loyalists and especially the British Government.
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein President.
He also criticised the British Government for not acting on the issue of I-R-A political prisoners.
He said the British Government had refused to recognise the democratic rights of large sections of his people and had made no significant effort to demilitarize the situation.
SOUNDBITE:
The British Government does not listen to public opinion when that public opinion is Irish public opinion. And the British Government is still moving too slow to engage in the peace process.
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein President.
Adams also called for the permanent withdrawal of the British Army from all nationalist areas and for the permanent disbandment of the Royal Ulster Constabulary -the Northern Ireland police force.

Catholic priest Martin Magill's powerful speech gets standing ovation
Priest Father Martin Magill was speaking at St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast today as mourners across different communities and political groups of Northern Ireland joined together to pay their final respects. Lyra McKee was killed by indiscriminate fire as she observed clashes on April 18 between police and New IRA dissidents on the Creggan estate in Londonderry. Irish Republican Sinn Fein party leader Mary Lou McDonald and Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster joined a gathering on Good Friday last week to condemn the overnight killing. There were emotional scenes today as 600 mourners stood up and applauded a powerful speech by Fr Magill, who said: 'I commend our political leaders for standing together in Creggan on Good Friday. I am however left with a question. Why in God's name does it take the death of a 29-year-old woman with her whole life in front of her?' UK Prime Minister Theresa May, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Irish premier Leo Varadkar, President of Ireland Michael D Higgins and Irish foreign affairs minister Simon Coveney were among those attending. Mrs May spoke with Miss McKee's partner Sara Canning, 35, and the rest of her family. Both Mrs May and Mr Corbyn were absent from the regular Wednesday Prime Minister's Questions to attend the funeral.

Some more ringing from John's Lane, Dublin
Taken during a District Practice, Saturday 10th February 2018.
John's Lane, apart from holding a fairly rare Murphy octave (with two trebles by Carr's of Smithwick), is probably best known for the terrifying staircase by which one ascends to the ringing room: It's a Victorian ironwork staircase, and unlike the cage at Pershore Abbey, there's nothing to stop you falling off the stairs apart from your balance, and hanging on to the railing!
The bells are probably more satisfying to raise than they are to ring. The tenor takes quite a lot of work, the trebles come down very fast, the placement of the ropes has you up against the wall, and there is quite a long draft of rope.
I will admit though, it's one of the most gorgeous Churches I've ever rung in! Worth going for the building alone.
Notice also the unusual tower shape. There's only two towers in Ireland with this type of shape; St John's, here, and St Mark's Church in Dundela, up north in Belfast.

If you wish to come over to ring in Ireland, we hold District Practices once a month; in Northern Ireland on the 1st Saturday of the month, and in the Eastern District (covering the area from Drogheda to Wexford), on the 2nd Saturday.
