Schönau am Königsee
Schönau is surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps; it is the southeasternmost German municipality, bordering on the Austrian state of Salzburg at the Hoher Göll massif and the Steinernes Meer range. The present-day commune was formed in 1978 by the merger of the former Schönau and Königssee municipalities. Since 1984 the municipal area also comprises the formerly unincorporated Königssee lake, the famous St. Bartholomew's Church and the surrounding mountains from the east face of the Watzmann peak up to the Austrian border in the south, including the eastern part of Berchtesgaden National Park. From the lake, the Königsseer Ache creek runs down to Berchtesgaden.
St. Bartholomä, on Königssee, Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany
Located on the western bank of Königssee, the church of St. Bartholomä is an iconic symbol of the Berchtesgaden region with the shape of its cupolas being that used in the logo of the regional tourist authority. It has been a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church since its creation in 1134 and is named after Saint Bartholomew the Apostle as he is the patron saint of Alpine farmers and providers of dairy produce. This pilgrammage continues to this day and is celebrated on 24 August when the procession starts from Maria Alm in Austria and concludes at the church.
I was staying at Camping Mühlleiten, Schönau am Königssee and was therefore able to walk to the edge of the lake in order to get the boat. There is a long hiking trail to it but it was temporarily closed due to bad weather during my visit - in April 2017 there was a lot of snow and the trail is potentially dangerous in slippy weather. The boat ride across Königssee is very pleasant, one scarcely hears the electric motor of the boat which is obligatory in order to protect the water of the lake. After setting off, there is a feeling of travelling through a fjord with high mountains on either side reaching up to 2,700 metres.
There is a hunting lodge next to the church. This dates originally to the twelfth century although it has undergone several rebuilds since then. Until 1803, it was a private residence of the Berchtesgaden provosts however following the reorganisation of the Holy Roman Empire that year and the annexation by the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810, it was taken over by the ruling House of Wittelsbach as a place they could hunt from. Today it is a restaurant.

St. Bartholomew, the landmark of the Royal Sea, can only be reached by boat. The world-famous pilgrimage church, whose first components from the 12th century. , Is picturesque on a peninsula. Next to it stands the former hunting lodge, which now serves as an idyllic guest house.
In Schönau a. Koenigssee is very carefully handled with the precious heritage of the past. The historic hipped roof huts are just a sign of this. The naval shipping industry was already very advanced in 1909, and it was already thought of the environment. Since then one can sail the Königssee with electric motor boats, which glide calmly over the lake to the present day.
There are more features: trumpets - or flugelhorn sounds heard in the west side of the lake as an impressive echo several times.

The Königssee is a lake located in the extreme southeast of the German State of Bavaria (Bayern), near the German-Austrian Border. With its crystal-clear emerald-green water and mystifying atmosphere it is the most beautiful lake in Germany. Königssee's landmark, the chapel of St. Bartholomew can be seen at a distance. This world-famous church, originally dating back to the 12th century, lies at the tip of a picturesque peninsula.

Königssee
The Königssee is a lake located in the extreme southeast Berchtesgadener Land district of the German state of Bavaria, near the border with Austria. Large parts are comprised by the Berchtesgaden National Park. Lying within the Berchtesgaden Alps in the municipality of Schönau am Königsee, just south of Berchtesgaden and the Austrian City of Salzburg, the Königssee is Germany's third deepest lake. Located at a Jurassic rift it was formed by glaciers during the last ice age.The lake is noted for its clear water and is advertised as the cleanest lake in Germany. For this reason, only electric driven passenger ships, rowing and pedal boats have been permitted on the lake since 1909. The Königssee is a natural lake in the extreme southeast Berchtesgadener Land district of the German state of Bavaria, near the Austrian border. Most of the lake is within the Berchtesgaden National Park.
Situated within the Berchtesgaden Alps in the municipality of Schönau am Königsee, just south of Berchtesgaden and the Austrian city of Salzburg, the Königssee is Germany's third deepest lake. Located at a Jurassic rift, it was formed by glaciers during the last ice age. It stretches about 7.7 km (4.8 mi) in the north-south direction and is about 1.7 km (1.1 mi) across at its widest point. Except at its outlet, the Königsseer Ache at the village of Königssee, the lake similar to a fjord is surrounded by steeply rising flanks of mountains up to 2,700 m (8,900 ft), including the Watzmann massif in the west. The railway Königsseebahn served the lake from 1909 until 1965. Its last tracks were dismantled during 1971, and the station in Berchtesgaden was demolished in 2012. The only remaining element of the railway is the Königsee station (now a restaurant). The track route is mostly used as a walking path.
Echo of Lake Königssee │St. Bartholomew, Berchtesgaden, TV-Set Tierarzt Dr. Engel 'Waldhauser Bräu'
When shipping across the Lake Königssee as a tourist you will never miss the world famous Trumpet echo. One of the captains will blow his melody on his trumpet - some are quite crooked and others are like the melody of the blowing wind.
During your boat trip visitors get a lot of background information about the lake itself and the mountains around. One of the highlights is also the one special mountain which is also called the 'Sleeping Witch'. You will know what I am talking about as soon as you catch a glimpse of it.
What I found absolutely interesting was the fact that the water of Lake Königssee is deeply green and almost crystal clear - so, this is totally different compared to other lakes or rivers somewhere in the countryside.
In case you are familiar with German TV-series you probably might have seen the TV-set of the 'Waldhauser Bräu' - a beergarden restaurant in downtown Berchtesgaden where they shooted the family series about the 'Vet Dr. Engel'. I have never heard of it before, but some maybe might know it!
