St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow (Russia) - Travel Guide
Take a tour of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russian Federation -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
It looks more like a cluster of brightly colored hot air balloons than a cathedral.
This is St. Basil's, or the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin By the Moat.
This flamboyantly shaped and colored building is one of Russia's most important churches.
The cathedral was started in 1555 as eight chapels built around a larger ninth.
There have been several theories about the design of St. Basil's, but no certain answers.
The cathedral has had several additions, and the whole church narrowly escaped destruction under Stalin.
St. Basil's is no longer a church, it now operates as a museum.

St. Basil's Cathedral: Ginger castle on Red Square
Called everything from beautiful to unusual and downright strange-looking, Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral remains the city's most celebrated landmark and nothing short of Russia's national symbol.
Building Wonders of the World: Saint Basil's Cathedral in LEGO® bricks
See how we recreated the iconic Russian building, Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, from LEGO® bricks! Often mistaken for The Kremlin thanks to countless 80's cold war movies, the cathedral is over 400 years old and the 9 unique colourful domes adorning the spires represent the Heavenly City of the Orthodox Church. Using nearly 72,000 pieces and taking over 320 hours for builder Mark to create, it is probably the longest build of any model at Wonders of the World!
How to draw Saint Basil's Cathedral, Moscow
Saint Basil's Cathedral
The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed is a church in Red Square in Moscow, Russia. The building, now a museum, is officially known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat or Pokrovsky Cathedral. It was built from 1555–1561 on orders from Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. It was the city's tallest building until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600.
The original building, known as Trinity Church and later Trinity Cathedral, contained 8 churches arranged around the ninth, central church of Intercession; the tenth church was erected in 1588 over the grave of venerated local saint Vasily (Basil). In the 16th and 17th centuries, the church, perceived as the earthly symbol of the Heavenly City, as happens to all churches in Byzantine Christianity, was popularly known as the Jerusalem and served as an allegory of the Jerusalem Temple in the annual Palm Sunday parade attended by the Patriarch of Moscow and the tsar.
The building is shaped as a flame of a bonfire rising into the sky, a design that has no parallel in Russian architecture. Dmitry Shvidkovsky, in his book Russian Architecture and the West, states that it is like no other Russian building. Nothing similar can be found in the entire millennium of Byzantine tradition from the fifth to the fifteenth century ... a strangeness that astonishes by its unexpectedness, complexity and dazzling interleaving of the manifold details of its design. The cathedral foreshadowed the climax of Russian national architecture in the 17th century.

4. Mid of Mother of God icon on exterior
5. Wide pan of cathedral, tilt up
6. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Alexey Levykin, Director of State History Museum in Moscow:
We are amassing materials connected with Saint Basil's Cathedral. We have engravings made by foreigners and travellers who used to come here, dating back to the 16 century. The Red Square and the city looked totally different but the Cathedral remains in place. In the 17th century, the Red Square changed its essence, but the Cathedral remained in place. 17th, 18th, 19th.... it's the same story. The epochs pass and change, but it (cathedral) remains in place.

13. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Tatiana Saracheva, Director of museum in Saint Basil's Cathedral:
On the cover we see the life size image of Saint Basil, and it is believed that it was one of the first images of a saint who had just been canonised in 1588, and this beautiful cover was made the following year. Now it is one of the sacred objects of Saint Basil's Cathedral.

18. SOUNDBITE: (English) vox pop, Luther, Orthodox Christian tourist from Texas, USA:
I am personally Orthodox, and to be here on such a special day, the 450th year anniversary of Saint Basil's, is a dream come true, and going around the Kremlin and having it capped off, at the end of the day with a visit to Saint Basil's, couldn't be more perfect or complete.

STORYLINE:
An exhibition opened on Tuesday at Moscow's famous Saint Basil's Cathedral, marking the 450th anniversary of the beautiful church, which has undergone extensive restoration work.
The exhibition details the life of Saint Basil himself, a so-called yurodivy or holy fool for Christ, and other religious zealots of the Russian Orthodox religion.
The gleaming cathedral has had years of restoration work that cost 390 million rubles (14 million US dollars), including structural reinforcement of the walls and its distinctive brightly coloured onion domes and spires.
The holy fools were known for acts of suffering in the name of their religious belief.
Some braved Russian winters by walking around stark naked, others mortified their flesh by wearing heavy fetters or lice-infested sackclothes.
They fasted, always slept outside, uttered prophecies, performed healings, and even walked on water, according to their hagiographies.
Saint Basil was a peasant's son, nicknamed the Naked Walker, and revered by Muscovites for healings and prophecies.
The holy fools dared to speak the truth to the powerful, being virtually the only group that could openly criticise the Kremlin rulers and channel ordinary people's frustration.
Saint Basil was no exception - he fearlessly lambasted the tyrannical policies of Ivan the Terrible, one of the Russia's most violent czars.
Over the years, it was associated with Saint Basil, at whose grave many miracles happened, according to church chronicles.
