Red Hill | Have You Been Inside St Brigid’s Church?
The glorious red brick structure on the hill is pretty hard to miss, but have you ever been inside?
This Sunday is your opportunity, as St Brigid’s opens it’s doors to the public for Brisbane Open House.
It was finished in August 1914, just before WWI had begun, for an incredibly poor parish of Catholics.

St Stephens Catholic Cathedral - Queensland - Brisbane - AUSTRALIA

Saving St Brigid's Pozible Campaign
St Brigid's Church in Crossley, on the South West Coast of Victoria, was very nearly shut down until the local community made a stand to save it.
Regina Lane wrote a memoir about the community's five year struggle to save the church and the hall their ancestors had built for them and their children a hundred years ago. She asked us to make a Pozible campaign video to help her publish the book. We said yes because we love Regina's book, and we love this story of an Irish-Australian community that fought back. We hope you enjoy.

Saving St Brigids - A Memoir By Regina Lane
At the top of a hill in south-west Victoria, surrounded by rolling green hills that fall away to the Southern Ocean, sits a grand old red-brick church. For more than 150 years, these fertile volcanic fields have sustained the largest rural population of Irish descent in Australia. Built and paid for by the children of famine survivors, St Brigid's is a symbol of faith and hope in an ancient land, by a cold, wild sea.
In 2009, the Catholic Church put the church and hall up for sale, against the wishes of the local community. What began as a small local issue soon became a national news story, in a battle that went all the way to Rome.
Saving St Brigid's is the truly unique story of a small Australian rural community who, in the spirit of their Irish rebel ancestors, stood up for what they believed in. Their fight for justice awakens the author to the richness of her Irish Catholic culture, and its lasting legacy on the community and the Church, she grew up in. Through the lens of her Irish heritage and that of the local indigenous people, she weaves together a lyrical narrative of song and story, and discovers just how much our ancestral traditions have to teach us if we are to transform the world we live.

Mass celebrating the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop's Feast day was celebrated with a Mass in the Cathedral on August 8.
Her connection to Brisbane, both through the time she spent resident here and in establishing a number of local schools, was the driver behind her being named as the Archdiocesan Patron in 2009.
Her commitment to helping poor and marginalised children attend Catholic schools is the reason for her ongoing popularity with people all across the Archdiocese and the state.
