The Welland Canal Centre at Lock 3 is a great introduction to the Welland Canal. First check the shipping schedule on the TV screen, which will list when the next vessel will go through Lock 3 and plan accordingly. If you can start with the movie explaining the building of the Welland Canals, do so.
A ship will take about 45 minutes to transverse the lock so my video uses time lapse photography to speed this up.
The centre and viewing stands are wheel chair accessible and the cost of the centre is a free will donation.
The other seven locks can be viewed also but at Lock 3 there is a raised viewing stand to give a better vantage point.

Welland Ship Canal - Family Tour, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Canada
The Welland Ship Canal is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway, that connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean and is used by ships to by-pass Niagara Falls. These ships carry cargo and passengers. The First Welland Canal was built in 1824. It opened in November 1829 with 39 locks and entered the Niagara River above Niagara Falls at Chippawa. It was lengthened in 1833 to Port Colborne with 40 locks. The First Canal was constructed of wood and has completely disappeared, either disintegrated, dismantled or been buried. The present Welland Ship Canal is the fourth canal to be built and was completed in 1932.

Welland Canal at St. Catherine's Lock 3 - how boats get around Niagara Falls
The Welland Canal is a man-made ship canal in Ontario, Canada, connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
It forms a key section of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes Waterway.
Traversing the Niagara Peninsula from Port Weller to Port Colborne, it enables ships to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment and bypass Niagara Falls. ~Wikipedia
Here, we visit the Welland Canal Lock 3 in St. Catherine's Ontario and checked out the museum.
St. Catharines, Down Town Construction
I wandered around down town St. Catharines, to check out the various construction work going on throughout. St. Paul and King street are going to be converted to 2-way traffic. You mostly see King St, and a little of st. Paul and Queen streets and finish off at the bus terminal at the end.
The PineGlen exits Lock 3 on the Welland Canal
The Welland Canal allows ships to bypass Niagara Falls and transit between Lakes Ontario and Erie. There is a viewing platform and visitor centre at Lock 3 that allows for great viewing of the lake ships as they pass through the lock. In this video, the PineGlen -- headed downstream and most likely carrying grain from the prairies -- exits Lock 3 on its way to Lake Ontario.

A small trip with a big payoff to St. Catharines Museum
It's a small trip with a big payoff. The St. Catharines Museum is about 45 minutes north of Buffalo and well worth the visit. There are a couple classic cars here, one is a REO right here in St. Catharines 1912. Inside the museum you'll discover a great display about the underground railroad highlighting one of the city's most recognizable citizens, Harriet Tubman.

PORT COLBORNE WELLAND CANAL NIAGARA FALLS ONTARIO CANADA
The freighters at this canal will blow your mind as their 30,000-ton weight is lifted up and over the Niagara Escarpment. Originally developed in 1829 for the purpose of a safe detour for ships to go around Niagara Falls, the Welland Canal has a long and rich history to offer visitors to the area. With 27 miles of water, the canal has eight locks, the first seven being in the first 9 miles of the canal from Thorold and north. Locks, or sections of water that are closed off with gates, raise or lower vessels with the water levels. As the water flows downhill from Lake Erie toward Lake Ontario, the locks are filled and emptied. The Lock 3 Viewing Complex has an elevated area for easy viewing of the canal. Visit the Welland Canal, located 15 minutes from Niagara Falls and next to the St. Catharines Museum, and explore the system of locks for a fun and educational experience.
Niagara Falls is a set of massive waterfalls located on the Niagara River. Niagara Falls (French: les Chutes du Niagara) comprises three separate waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls (sometimes called the Canadian Falls), the American Falls, and the smaller, adjacent Bridal Veil Falls. While not exceptionally high, Niagara Falls is very wide. With more than 6 million cubic feet (168,000 m³) of water falling over the crestline every minute it is the most powerful waterfall in North America. Wikipedia CC
