Greek-Orthodox: Monastery Of St.Catherien, Sinai (Egypt) • Abbeys and Monasteries
For 16 centuries ancient St.Catherine's monastery has braved the elements in the harsh Sinai mountains, a tiny Christian island in an Islamic sea, where past ages of Byzantine greatness have been preserved in the world's finest icon collection and an library surpassed by the great Vatican Library only. As a monk says: God's capital on earth must be Sinai, because it is here where he wrote his laws...This is the place of the Burning Bush, Moses and the Tenm Commandments, the Dance around the Golden Calf and the Ark of the Covenant.

St. Catherine's Monastery
Located at the foot of Mount Moses, St. Catherine's Monastery, was constructed by order of the Emperor Justinian between 527 and 565. Is built around what is thought to be Moses' Burning Bush, which has a chapel built atop it. It is a spectacular natural setting for priceless works of art, including Arab mosaics, Greek and Russian icons, Western oil paintings, paintings on wax, fine sacerdotal ornaments, marbles, enamels, chalices, reliquaries, including one donated by Czar Alexander II in the 19th century, and another by Empress Catherine of Russia in the 17th century. But of perhaps even greater significance is that it is the second largest collection of illuminated mauscripts (The Vatican has the largest). The collection consists of some 3,500 volumes in Greek, Coptic, Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Slavic, Syriac, Georgian and other languages. Around the year 1850, the fourth century Codex Sinaiticus, which is now in the British Museum in London, was discovered here. The Monastery even has a small 10th or 11th century mosque which was probably built to appease the Islamic authorities of the time. There is also a small chapel (the Chapel of St. Triphone, also known as the Skull House) which houses the skulls of deceased monks.

Saint Catherine's Monastery (Greek: Μονὴ τῆς Ἁγίας Αἰκατερίνης Monì tìs Agìas Ekaterìnis), in Arabic دير القدّيسة كاترينا commonly known as Santa Katarina lies on the Sinai Peninsula, at the mouth of a gorge at the foot of Mount Sinai in the city of Saint Catherine in Egypt's South Sinai Governorate. The monastery is Orthodox and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to the UNESCO report (60100 ha / Ref: 954), this monastery is one of the oldest working Christian monasteries in the world together with the Monastery of Saint Anthony, situated across the Red Sea in the desert south of Cairo, which also lays claim to that title. In the area around the monastery, a small town has grown, with hotels and swimming pools, called Saint Katherine City.

Hajar Musa (Rock of Moses) in Wadi el Arbain, where Prophet Moses fetched water from the rock. A holy place to all the big monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Locals believe the twelve clefts on it represent the twelve springs mentioned in the Quran (Sura 2:60). It is also mentioned in the Exodus as the rock which sustained the children of Israel (1 Cor. 10:4). There is a small Orthodox chapel next to it. According to Swiss orientalist Johann Ludwig Burkhardt, the Jebeliya Bedouin believe that by making [female camels] crouch down before the rock [...] the camels will become fertile and yield more milk. There is also a Bedouin marriage proposal rock in the walled compound.

Muhammad's Covenant with Christians to be Destroyed at St. Catherine's Monastery
In the ancient monastery of Saint Catherine's at Mount Sinai in Egypt, there is a covenant of Prophet Muhammad's in which he guarantees protection and other rights to the Christian communities of his realm.
But a retired Egyptian army general says he has filed a court case pushing for Saint Catherine's to be demolished, thus displacing its Greek monks and potentially endangering Prophet Muhammad's covenant.
St. Catherine's Monastery Mt. Sinai Sinai Peninsula Egypt
St. Catherine's Monastery, located at the base of Mt. Sinai, in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, is where the Burning Bush is found. It was here that God spoke to Moses and told him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Also located here is the well where Moses met his wife. The oldest complete copy of the Bible was found at the Monastery.
St. Catherine Monastery | St. Catherine City, Sinai Peninsula | Egypt | We.Are.Wanderful
NOVEMBER 11, 2010—After having just completed our quest to hike to the summit of Mt. Sinai at about 5:00AM that chilly morning in Sinai Peninsula, we immediately made our way back and passed by St. Catherine's Monastery.
The Monastery is a fortress and the only visible man-made structure as far as the eye can see. It is a natural rest stop for those who just came from Mt. Sinai's summit. In fact, almost all of the Monastery's visitors are pilgrims coming from their quest to go to Mt. Sinai's summit.
The Monastery, however, is also a major tourist attractions on its own right, being the home of the bibilial Burning Bush (Exodus 3).
This is a short slideshow video presentation of our photos during our shot but memorable visit of St. Catherine's Monastery. Enjoy watching.

The first monks came here the end of the third, the beginning of the fourth century. They came here because this was a harsh desert. It provided them with the silence and the austerity that they were looking for to devote their lives to prayer and fasting. But this is also the place where God appeared to Moses, first at the bush that burned without being consumed, and then at the peak of Sinai where God gave Moses the ten commandments.

19. SOUNDBITE (English) Father Justin, monastery librarian:
The monastery has never been destroyed and never been abandoned in all of its history, and through the years many manuscripts were written here, many manuscripts were brought here. The community has been predominantly Greek throughout its history, but it is also been the goal of pilgrims from all over the world and that is reflected in the library. We have manuscripts in eleven different languages. The five largest categories are Greek, Arabic, Syriac, Georgian, and Slavonic. No other monastery library has manuscripts in so many different languages.

21. SOUNDBITE (English) Father Justin, monastery librarian:
The monastery library has 3,300 manuscripts in the old collection, approximately 1,000 manuscripts in the new finds and perhaps another thousand manuscripts in the archives which also contain both Arabic and Ottoman scrolls.

It is awesome yeah. It is really a special experience, we were looking forward to this. We flew in just a couple of days ago, we immediately came here right away, and we thought it would be very special to tour the monastery, to hike Gebal Musa (Moses mountain). We saw the sunset last night, we walked down, it was almost a full moon. It's awesome.

31. SOUNDBITE (English) Christine Ballinger, American visitor:
Last night we climbed the mountain and watched the sunset and today we were in the monastery, and we also got to meet with one of the fathers and learn about the library and all of the sacred manuscripts, and I have to say that was probably one of my favourite parts.

According to Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History, investigators using a portable X-ray machine discovered a cranium, ribs, as well as bones from hands, feet and legs inside the sculpted containers.
Investigators also saw that while the extremities of the reliquaries were made of wax, the torsos were constructed from cloth.
The bones contained within them are from saints as well, though not necessarily the same saint that is represented by the sculpture.
Sanchez said the information will allow conservationists to develop preservation and restauration strategies for the reliquaries located in the Mexico City cathedral.
Assisting in the project is Dr. Jose Luis Velazquez, a veterinarian from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Velazquez used the handheld X-ray machine to collect detailed images of the reliquaries.
