Tasmania (abbreviated as Tas and known colloquially as Tassie) is an island state, part of the Commonwealth of Australia, located 240 kilometres (150 mi) to the south of the Australian continent, separated by Bass Strait. The state includes the island of Tasmania, the 26th largest island in the world, and the surrounding 334 islands.[8] The state has a population of 507,626 (as of June 2010), of whom almost half reside in the greater Hobart precinct. Tasmania's area is 68,401 square kilometres (26,410 sq mi), of which the main island covers 62,409 square kilometres (24,096 sq mi).[9]
Tasmania is promoted as the natural state, the Island of Inspiration,[10] and A World Apart, Not A World Away owing to its large and relatively unspoiled natural environment. Almost 45% of Tasmania lies in reserves, national parks and World Heritage Sites.[11] The island is 364 kilometres (226 mi) long from its northernmost to its southernmost points, and 306 kilometres (190 mi) from west to east.
The state capital and largest city is Hobart, which encompasses the local government areas of City of Hobart, City of Glenorchy, and City of Clarence, while the satellite town of Kingston (part of the Municipality of Kingborough) is generally included in the Greater Hobart area.
The northernmost terrestrial point of the state of Tasmania is Boundary Islet, a nature reserve in Bass Strait which, due to a quirk of history, is shared with the state of Victoria.
The subantarctic Macquarie Island and its surrounding islands are also under the administration of Tasmania as a nature reserve and part of the Huon Valley Council local government area. The Bishop and Clerk Islets, about 37 km south of Macquarie Island, are the southernmost terrestrial point of the state of Tasmania, and the southernmost internationally recognised land in Australia.
During colonial times the cuisines of the British Isles were the standard in most areas of Tasmania. Tasmania now has a wide range of restaurants, in part due to the arrival of immigrants and changing cultural patterns. Scattered across Tasmania are many vineyards,[51] and Tasmanian beer brands such as Boags and Cascade are known and sold in Mainland Australia. King Island off the northwestern coast of Tasmania has a reputation for boutique cheeses[51] and dairy products. Tasmanians are also consumers of seafood,[51] such as crayfish, orange roughy, salmon[51] and oysters,[51] both farmed and wild.
To foster tourism, the state government encourages or supports several annual events in and around the island. The best known of these is the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, starting on Boxing Day in Sydney and usually arriving at Constitution Dock in Hobart around three to four days later, during the Taste of Tasmania, an annual food and wine festival. Other events include the road rally Targa Tasmania which attracts rally drivers from around the world and is staged all over the state, over five days. Rural or regional events include Agfest, a three-day agricultural show held at Carrick (just west of Launceston) in early May and the Royal Hobart Show and Royal Launceston Show, both held in October annually. Music events held in Tasmania include the Falls Festival at Marion Bay (a Victorian event now held in both Victoria and Tasmania on New Year's Eve), MS Fest is a charity music event held in Launceston, to raise money for those with multiple sclerosis. Recent additions to the state arts events calendar include the 10 Days on the Island arts festival, and MONA FOMA, run by David Walsh and curated by Brian Ritchie.

Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton - Greater Shepparton
Learn more:
The Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton uses Australian native plants in themed gardens designed to represent the cultural, environmental, historical and agricultural characteristics of Greater Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley.
The garden designs depict the story of change. The garden themes follow a timeline and are revealed to visitors as they walk along the pathways. Each themed garden, many still to be constructed, is described in this section, and also shown on the Master Plan.
The site consists of native grassy bushland, wetlands, and a 7 hectare, 30 metre-high reclaimed landfill area with a lookout on top. This provides an expansive view of the local landscape and forms a significant landmark on the outskirts of the city, adjacent to the Goulburn and Broken Rivers.
Location - The Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton is located in Kialla Tip Road, off Riverview Drive. (Turn off from the Goulburn Valley Hwy at Riverside Plaza.)
Opening Hours - The Gardens are open every day, all day. Please park your vehicle at the gated area at the end of Kialla Tip Road and walk in.
Cycling Areas in the Gardens - Bicycles can be ridden on the lower areas around the base of Honeysuckle Rise and on the crushed brick paths through the native bushland areas. Please dismount if you wish to walk to the top of Honeysuckle Rise.
No Dogs Policy - Please adhere to this policy. Should you wish to exercise your dogs in Shepparton there are many shared pathways along the Goulburn River and an off-leash dog park in Paterson Road.
A Master Plan for the site has been prepared. It guides the development of the themed gardens across the top of Honeysuckle Rise as well as the plantings and pathways which wind through the natural bushland areas.
The guiding principles for the development of the Gardens are:
•Local themes
•Use of Australian plants
•Community involvement
•Sustainability
•Appreciation of our rivers
•Use of local materials
•Tourism
•Healthy lifestyles
•Accessibility
•Public art
Development is taking place according to budgeted funds available from Council.

Alec is funded by corporate interests to push through bills that destroy the environment at the expense of indigenous people and people of color.
Energy companies, corporate polluters, factory farms and their politician allies voted to change environmental rules by:
Limiting the ability of people to use their local governmental power to protect their towns and neighborhoods from pollution and other hazards, by:
Forbidding local governments from limiting pesticide use.
Streamlining siting for nuclear and other power plants by placing siting authority in a central agency.
Prohibiting local efforts to oppose genetically modified (GMO) crops.
Opposing local, state, and federal waste reduction and mandated recycling laws, including regulations on packaging (such as Styrofoam restrictions), in favor of a voluntary approach to waste reduction.
Eliminating land use and zoning regulationsdesigned to guide new development, and replacing them with private negotiations.
Privatizing public water and sewer systemsand prohibiting local governments from requiring that contractors meet labor and wage standards.
Undermining environmental regulations through novel, aggressive legal theories that claim regulations limiting pollution, for example, constitute a taking of the right to pollute and thus require compensation under the Constitution, through innocuously named bills like:
the Private Property Protection Act and the
the Regulatory Costs Fairness Act
Expanding the rights of polluters, and limiting regulation of greenhouses gases and other industrial activities, by:
Protecting polluting corporations from civil and criminal liability by making a company’s internal audit or assessments of its pollution privileged and thus inadmissible in legal proceedings. (See also this bill).
Opposing uniform rules on hazardous coal combustion waste, in favor of a race-to-the-bottom amongst state rules.
Creating new burdens for legislators and agencies to pass environmental regulations by:
Establishing a business-dominated panel to assess all environmental regulations, using a framework established by a climate change-denier, the Copenhagen Consensus.
Requiring states pass through multiple layers of process before passing environmental regulations, including approval by two five-person panels emphasizing the theoretical economic effect of regulations.
Hindering state-level regulation of groundwater contaminants by establishing EPA standards as a ceiling, rather than a floor, giving an agribusiness-dominated agency a regulatory veto, and adding other burdens.
Putting the regulation of fracking for methane gas in the hands of the states rather than establishing federal safety and environmental standards. Fracking has been shown to spoil enormous quantities of drinkable water and contaminate nearby wells and watersheds.
Reversing notions of preemption by giving states authority to invalidate any federal law or directive deemed to violate an expansive conception of state’s rights.
Giving states the power to appropriate national parks and other federal public land, possibly to allow greater oil, gas, and coal extraction.
ALEC stands for American Legislative Exchange Counsel; it was founded in the 1970’s and was a way to get corporate industry ideas to lawmakers. As it grew in momentum by the 90’s the corporate industry was actually writing laws (model bills). The way they planned to accomplish getting there bills in place and in changing laws on a larger scale was by doing it from the state level, getting legislatures to propose “model bills” and getting them passed in each of their own states. This method has worked very well.
Close to 98% of ALEC’s funding comes from corporations.
The funding works like this:
Corporate Members pay annually between 7,000 and 25,000yr
If a corporation participates in any of the 9 task forces (which they do), additional fees apply. Ranging from 2,500 to 10,000 depending on the task force.
Corporations can sponsor events or specific projects; they also give away “scholarships” so that legislatures can come to events.
ALEC also receives grants from corporations.
Less than 2% of ALEC’s funding comes from “Membership Dues”
Membership dues are $50 per year paid by state legislators. (2)
Alec is non-profit. Non-profits are generally groups formed without the intention of making a profit. Being non profit this also means they are tax exempt.

Sydney ( (listen)) is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Located on Australia's east coast, the metropolis surrounds Port Jackson and extends about 70 km (43.5 mi) on its periphery towards the Blue Mountains to the west, Hawkesbury to the north, and Macarthur to the south. Sydney is made up of 658 suburbs, 40 local government areas and 15 contiguous regions. Residents of the city are known as Sydneysiders. As of June 2017, Sydney's estimated metropolitan population was 5,131,326.Indigenous Australians have inhabited the Sydney area for at least 30,000 years, and it remains one of the richest in Australia in terms of Aboriginal archaeological sites, with thousands of engravings located throughout the region. In 1770, during his first Pacific voyage in the Endeavour, Lieutenant James Cook, after leaving Botany Bay, saw the entrance to Port Jackson, but sailed past and did not enter the inlet. In 1788, the First Fleet of convicts, led by Arthur Phillip, were the first recorded Europeans to sail into Port Jackson. Here they founded Sydney as a British penal colony, the first European settlement in Australia. Phillip named the city Sydney in recognition of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney. Penal transportation to New South Wales ended soon after Sydney was incorporated as a city in 1842. A gold rush occurred in the colony in 1851, and over the next century, Sydney transformed from a colonial outpost into a major global cultural and economic centre. After World War II, it experienced mass migration and became one of the most multicultural cities in the world. At the time of the 2011 census, more than 250 different languages were spoken in Sydney and about 40 percent of residents spoke a language other than English at home. Furthermore, 36% of the population reported having been born overseas.Despite being one of the most expensive cities in the world, the 2018 Mercer Quality of Living Survey ranks Sydney tenth in the world in terms of quality of living, making it one of the most livable cities. It is classified as an Alpha World City by Globalization and World Cities Research Network, indicating its influence in the region and throughout the world. Ranked eleventh in the world for economic opportunity, Sydney has an advanced market economy with strengths in finance, manufacturing and tourism. There is a significant concentration of foreign banks and multinational corporations in Sydney and the city is promoted as one of Asia Pacific's leading financial hubs. Established in 1850, the U ...

The state encompasses the main island of Tasmania, the 26th-largest island in the world, and the surrounding 334 islands. The state has a population of around 526,700 as of March 2018. Just over forty percent of the population resides in the Greater Hobart precinct, which forms the metropolitan area of the state capital and largest city, Hobart.Tasmania's area is 68,401 km2 (26,410 sq mi), of which the main island covers 64,519 km2 (24,911 sq mi). It is promoted as a natural state, and protected areas of Tasmania cover about 42% of its land area, which includes national parks and World Heritage Sites. Tasmania was the founding place of the first environmental party in the world.Due to an administrative quirk caused by an early mapping error, the state of Tasmania shares a tiny land border with the state of Victoria. This 85 metres (279 ft) line bisects Boundary Islet, a nature reserve in the Bass Strait, separating the northernmost land governed by Tasmania from the southernmost land governed by Victoria. The Bishop and Clerk Islets, about 37 km south of Macquarie Island, are the southernmost terrestrial point of the state of Tasmania, and the southernmost internationally recognised land in Australia. About 2,500 kilometres (1,600 mi) south of Tasmania island lies Antarctica, which is nearer than areas in the northern Australian mainland.
The island is believed to have been occupied by indigenous peoples for 30,000 years before British colonisation. It is thought Aboriginal Tasmanians were separated from the mainland Aboriginal groups about 10,000 years ago when the sea rose to form the Bass Strait. The Aboriginal population was estimated to have been between 3,000 and 7,000 at the time of colonisation, but was almost wiped out within 30 years by a combination of violent guerrilla conflict with settlers known as the Black War, intertribal conflict, and from the late 1820s, the spread of infectious diseases to which they had no immunity. The conflict, which peaked between 1825 and 1831 and led to more than three years of martial law, cost the lives of almost 1100 Aboriginals and settlers. The near-destruction of Tasmania's Aboriginal population has been described by some historians as an act of genocide by the British.
The island was permanently settled by Europeans in 1803 as a penal settlement of the British Empire to prevent claims to the land by the First French Empire during the Napoleonic Wars; around 75,000 convicts were sent to Van Diemen's Land before transportation ceased in 1853. The island was initially part of the Colony of New South Wales but became a separate, self-governing colony under the name Van Diemen's Land (named after Anthony van Diemen) in 1825. In 1854 the present Constitution of Tasmania was passed and the following year the colony received permission to change its name to Tasmania. In 1901 it became a state through the process of the Federation of Australia.
