Tubrid & Geoffrey Keating, County Tipperary, Ireland
Tubrid / Tubbrid (Tiobraid) was a parish Near Cahir & Cloghee
County Tipperary, Ireland.
A cemetery and two ruined churches are part of a cluster of architectural ruins of the old settlement known as Tubrid.
Geoffrey Keating (1569-1644) monk and Irish historian is buried here in a17th century chapel.
Keating is best known for his Irish-language Foras Feasa ar Éirinn,
Ireland's history from Genesis to Norman conquest. Keating completed Foras Feasa ar Éirinn about 1634. Keating wrote three other major works during his lifetime.
Tubrid encompasses two different eras in Irish religious history.
Tubrid is about 4 k (2.5 mi) from the village of Ballylooby, adjacent to an old stone bridge near Burgess.
Tubrid was an Irish sacred site long before Keating’s time.
The site’s name comes from a well (Irish Tobraid Chiaráin) where, during the 5th century, St. Declan baptized a baby named Ciarán.
Ciarán became a noted holy figure who founded a monastery at Tubrid. Ciarán performed miracles and received holy signs. He was sainted.
A holy well near the Tubrid churchyard, where St. Declan is believed to have work baptized another future saint became a pilgrimage site.
The larger ruin at Tubrid is an 18th century Church of Ireland chapel. It was abandoned in the late 1800s.
Several 16th century Counter-Reformation clerics including John Brenan, Archbishop of Cashel, and Eugene Duhy (O'Duffy) are also buried here.
