4796 Highway, West Vancouver BC Tom Hassan
One of Frances Caulfeilds original estate properties with 3 legal lots is being offered for the very first time! The Campbell Estate was originally owned by one of Vancouver's most prolific photographers in the 1900s, William J. Campbell (1886-1958). Many of West Vancouvers' oldest historical photos have the Campbell Studios seal on them. Campbell Studios was in operation on Burrard Street in Vancouver from 1921- 1996. The original house on the Campbell Estate burned down in the 1940s and was replaced with the current house in 1945 by well known architect Van Norman and includes a detached coach house by another well known architect Hollingsworth. This well maintained 2-3 bedroom home features many dramatic architectural details ahead of its time with floor to ceiling windows, granite fireplaces and a 2 storey staircase. Present home could be renovated and or expanded or build your family estate on one or all of the 3 legal lots with frontage on both Highway and Pilot House Road.
This signature West Vancouver piece of property features 29,268 square feet of land and 400 feet of frontage on Pilot House Road overlooking Tidley Cove, the rocky shoreline of Lighthouse park and Howe Sound. Caulfeild Park is a magical stretch of public access waterfront park situated directly across from this true semi-waterfront location. The public access to the Federal Wharf is located directly across from the property. There is not a better location in all of Olde Caulfeild.
The history of the picturesque little village now known as Olde Caulfeild was first purchased in 1899 by Francis W. Caulfeild. It was Mr. Caulfeilds' vision to plan a village of English styled homes with winding lanes, a local store, a public wharf and the charming Francis in the Woods Church. This unique Englished styled neighbourhood was one of the first of its kind in Canada. The original Pilot House Station building was located very close to 4796 Highway and used to watch and assist incoming ships into Vancouver harbour. Francis Caulfeild bequested the entire Pilot House foreshore to be used as a park for the enjoyment of all West Vancouver's resident prior to his passing in 1934.
This magical signature property is truly one of the prized estates in Vancouver.
Former Jesuit Church & Residence, Limerick
Reportage slideshow (June, 2011) of the (former) Sacred Heart Jesuit Church, Limerick, Ireland.
This iconic building is situated at the Crescent, on O'Connell Street, Limerick, and was completed in 1868 and opened for public worship on January 27th 1869. The architect was William Corbett and the church is in the parish of St Joseph's. According to some reports, it was originally intended to be dedicated to St. Aloysius but when it was formally dedicated in 1869 it was called the 'Church of the Sacred Heart'. The façade of the church is Classical/Grecian in design and was renovated in 1900. There are no aisles in the church but the nave had two rows of pews. The nave was extended in 1919.
The ceiling of the church is panelled with floriated ornaments in Stucco work. The high altar was designed by William Corbett and is made from 22 types of precious marble. On the floor around the high altar, there are the symbols of the four writers of the Gospels. The angel represents Matthew, the lion represents Mark while Luke and John are represented by the bull and eagle respectively.
Some of the stained glass windows throughout the church show the letters 'IHS'. These letters are the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus which is IHSOUS. In Latin the letters stand for Jesus hominum salvator which translates as 'Jesus, Saviour of men'.
There are nine mosaics above the high altar. The central mosaic is of the Sacred Heart ascending in the presence of St Margaret Mary Alacoque and Blessed Claude la Colombiere. It is surrounded (from left to right) by depictions of St Francis Jerome, St Francis Borgia, St Francis Xavier, St Ignatius, St Stanislaus, St Aloysius, St John Berchmans and St Francis Regis.
Sadly, the church (& residence) formally closed in 2006 and is currently for sale - again!

The 24th Annual 2011 Columbia Flyway Wildlife Show in Vancouver, Washington
The 24th annual 2011 Columbia Flyway Wildlife Show held on September 10 and 11 was another resounding success with 92 artists from the US and Canada entering 293 carvings. Vancouver's spectacular Water Resources Education Center again served as the taylor made venue. The Center's environmental mission to educate and protect wildlife and the environment harmonizes perfectly with our show that focuses on exquisite carvings of birds, fish and mammals. Since our association with the IWCA, the show has grown every year since it's beginnings 24 years ago in an inauspicious church basement.
The CFWS hosted the Bob Sutton IWCA Style Decoy National Championship and Jim Brace won Best of Show for his Black Duck hen. Ted Smith won Second Best with an Eared Grebe and a Black Scoter earned Third Best for Bruce DiVaccaro. Fred Hamer of Burbank California our featured carver and last year's best of show winner set up an impressive display of his work. World Champion Dennis Schroeder honored us by his own display in the foyer and demonstrated close up painting techniques at his table. The impressive entrance fountain pond floated a large slate of IWCA Style and Working decoys amazing a good crowd all afternoon. Even W.C. editor Tom Da Judge Huntington travelled West to set up a Waterfowl Carving table and was drafted to help judge our entertaining Miniature Floating Decoy Trade event. The event's 2012 species will be the Canvasback Drake. Cascade Carvers Supply and a new Wood vendor Jerry Harris of Dallas OR serviced carvers needs for tools and materials. An impressive showing of framed Junior Duck Stamp art was displayed on the Center's White Sturgeon Gallery walls and two expert demos by Brad Snodgrass and Fred Hamer in the Center's Classroom were very well attended.
Best of Show winner Tony Donato also bagged two Special awards from Ducks Unlimited and the Audubon team for his fine Green-winged Teal hen. Judy Caldwell's Grey Fox with mouse was favored by People's Choice on Saturday and Carver's Choice. Our Sportswriter's Award deservedly went to Ron Edward's Steelhead wall hanging. Everett Rodriguez's Virginia Rail won the Mayors Award, and Michael Buelna's great Leopard Shark won my favor with the Chairman's Award. The $500 Feather and Quill Club Purchase Award went home again with Jerry Harris for his exquisite Long-tail and Dr Lyon's $1000 Best of the Northwest Purchase Award was garnered by the talented Peter Kaune with a remarkable Violet-green Swallow. Next year's Best of N.W. species will be the Bohemian Waxwing so look for Jerry Poindexter's painting tips in an upcoming WC issue. The O'Neill Best of Washington Back Yard Birds $1000 Purchase Award was taken by Jerry for his entrancing Evening Grosbeak. Species for next year to be announced.

The Marble House, Warwick, Warwickshire - Fine and Country Leamington Spa
A magnificent and charming Jacobean Grade II* listed property situated in half an acre that is believed to have been built circa 1650. Steeped in history this iconic building is referenced several times in local historical manuscripts. We understand the house to have been built by Richard Yardley. It was constructed from Ashlar Sandstone from a locally sourced quarry. The main elevation faces west and looks over Warwick Racecourse.
Francis Smith was a master builder and architect born in 1671 who died in 1737. Famous for rebuilding significant parts of Warwick after the great fire in September 1694 which decimated many of the town’s Tudor buildings. Francis was notorious for his contribution to many of the local area’s significant buildings of interest and churches including Stoneleigh Abbey and Umberslade Hall to name a few. It is believed that his mason’s yard was situated within the land of The Marble House whilst it was owned by the Yardley family. It is referred to in his will as “my Marble Yard”. William Parkes, one of the early industrialists of Warwick inherited the property from his father. He sympathetically extended the house in 1812 in the same Ashlar Sandstone with the addition of two symmetrical wings with crenellated parapets.
The current owners have undertaken an enormous renovation project converting the building from commercial premises back to as it was originally designed, a residential family home. It is rare to find a property of this age that has the benefit of being superbly adapted to accommodate modern living standards. The architect has achieved the impossible by retaining so much of the original charm of the building and its history whilst incorporating changes to the buildings flow and use of rooms. The result is a truly unique traditional building that has evolved seamlessly into a practical family home that is conducive to contemporary living.
In total there are three key reception rooms, six bedrooms four of which have private en-suites and three with walk-in dressing rooms. Within the main living quarters, there is a family room, dining room, breakfast kitchen, utility, study and cloakroom.
Within the grounds, there is a detached annexe/Lodge House that offers a range of versatile options. Currently used as garaging, gymnasium and leisure suite with living area and kitchen it could comfortably accommodate an extended family or be used to run a business.
Many of the original features of the building have been both preserved and featured in the design. Ensuring that the rich heritage has been maintained, the woodwork wherever possible has been restored to its former glory. Doors and visible beams have been blasted and stripped back. Fireplaces exposed and restored. The original oak floorboards have been restored in many of the key reception rooms and the entrance hallway.
Unusual for a house of this age, the property basks in natural light with many rooms benefiting from multiple windows looking out onto different aspects of the grounds. There are three separate glass roof lanterns and a well light to ensure that the building is bright and welcoming. The beautiful windows have been lovingly restored with secondary glazing incorporating 82 new panels supplied and fitted by Storm Glazing. The same company commissioned to maintain the portfolio of the National Trust. Many of the windows also feature custom designed shutters where restoration of the existing shutters was not possible.
As part of the renovation the current owners have integrated several changes including LED downlighting with dimmer switches, mains lamp lighting, Category 5 cabling, integrated sound system with Sonos and ceiling mounted speakers, a zoned alarm system, the en-suites all have underfloor heating and the building also benefits from a fully integrated sprinkler system. Outside the grounds and gardens have been designed and landscaped by Stratford-upon-Avon based Susanna Brown, a landscape, architect and garden designer.

French in Quebec vs France: interview en français with subtitles (accent, attitude, history, curses)
How does Quebec French work? I sat down with my friend Geneviève from Montréal, Canada and interviewed her en français to understand the history. We even talked about curse words (safe for work/children, since Quebec French uses religious words as curses)
***
IMPORTANT NOTE: There is a mistake in the video suggesting that only Quebec speak French in Canada. But this forgets Nouveau Brunswick. Also, Parisians are NOT representative of the French in general.
All comments for this video will be pending. Please keep politics off the channel, and any hateful comments will not be approved.
***
Blog post with more background:
Geneviève and I were speaking in French during her visit in Amsterdam (I'm Irish by the way), so I decided to sit down with her and talk with her about some differences and history behind Quebec French.
We both agreed that there are some major problems in speaking with French people (although this was only my experience in Paris; the rest of France were much nicer to me), and she shared some of her other thoughts on travelling in Europe.
I hope you enjoy the interview; it's been four years since I lived among Francophones, so hopefully my level of French hasn't gone down *too* much! It's with the help of Couchsurfing guests like Geneviève that I've maintained a workable level of French all these years

Kayla - A Cry in the Wilderness
#familyfilms #familymovies #kayla #threedogwinter #dogs #dogmovies
To own Kayla on DVD -
Kayla is a family film that makes you feel good. It focuses on a young boy who still cannot accept his father’s eight-year-old disappearance and apparent death. He cries out for solace, while keeping his mother and well-meaning stepfather at a stony-faced distance. Then, one day, in the snowy wilderness, he encounters a wolf that looks exactly like the dog that led his father’s sled team. Despite the hostility of the townspeople, who fear the wolf will devour more of their livestock, the boy bonds with this dog, Kayla, who teaches him about love, loyalty, and self-sacrifice. Based Elizabeth van Steenwyk's novel Three Dog Winter.
