Savannah Wexford Choir Students June 2016
This short video documents the visit to County Wexford by the Savannah Children's Choir on 11th June 2016. The choir gave a public performance under the masts of the Dunbrody Famine Ship to celebrate the historic links between Wexford and Savannah. They were joined by the choir from Raheen National School who performed songs from their 1916 commemorative suite.
The historical links between Wexford and Savannah were explained those who gathered to enjoy the choirs’ performances by several undergraduate students from Georgia Southern University’s ‘Wexford-Savannah Axis’ research group.
After their performance in New Ross and having taken in a tour of the historic ship, the Savannah Children’s Choir then went on to enjoy a visit to the Irish National Heritage Park and the National Opera House, where they had the opportunity to sing with the world-famous Irish choral group, Anúna.
The Wexford-Savannah Axis research group were also welcomed to Wexford by Minister Paul Kehoe TD and Mr. Tom Enright (Chief Executive of Wexford County Council) at a civic reception in Wexford County Council buildings on 13th June 2016. At the reception, the students contributed to an exhibition curated by County Archivist Gráinne Doran which celebrates the growing links between County Wexford and Savannah, Georgia.

The Crossabeg Marchers.
In 1998 the people of County Wexford, Ireland celebrated the Bi-Centenary of the 1798 Irish Rebellion. Many parishes around County Wexford and beyond formed marching pike groups and throughout the year numerous monuments were unveiled to commemorate the fallen of 1798. In this monologue about my local Pike Group, I pay homage to at least twenty five of the local families who took part in the marches and of twenty six of the places we marched to for the commemoration ceremonies. Ireland 1997: An Irish Blessing Ennis Cathedral
The Notre Dame Folk Choir in the finale concert of their Ireland/Northern Ireland tour, Tuesday 3 June 1997, at Ennis Cathedral in County Clare.
Violin: Mary Sy; Flute: Jenny Welde.
This is the end of the videotape that Kristin Ahasic edited for the Folk Choir, with the addition of Hallelujah, My Father, a sort of standby song of the Choir's, which we would use if a communion line was running long and we needed more music to fill a stretch of time in the service. As you can see, we were rather fond of the piece in its own right.
By this time, though, Jen and I were outside the Cathedral. I had been so parched by the end of the concert that I had ended up following the crowd out of the church so that I could try to purchase a drink quickly, and Jen came along. Talking with people from the audience, we soon found ourselves in the company of a pair of Franciscan brothers, who we would spend time with the next day as we closed our tour with a private musical workshop for a cloistered community of Franciscan sisters or Poor Clares, for whom we were only the second group of visitors in living memory, as Ennis locals excitedly told us. It was in the unlikely company of these two robed Franciscan friars, then, that we were guided to a nearby pub so that I could quench my thirst. It was only when I saw the videotape that I found out that we had missed this final group moment of the night.

Ireland 1997: Amazing Grace Ballindooley Castle
The Notre Dame Folk Choir sings at the generous reception thrown in our honour by Chicago lawyer Mary Frances Hegarty of Park Ridge, Illinois. Solo: Justin Dunn. Hegarty had invited us to her Irish castle after hearing us earlier in the year give a concert at Quigley Seminary in Chicago.
This clip ends with a painful moment from the end of another tune, the Irish Christ Be Near At Either Hand, where Nathan Elliot and I had earlier broken into the jig danced by Notre Dame's Irish Guard and executed it with utter style. Now, requested by Kristin to repeat our feat, we fail miserably.
