LUNENBURG Watch the Bell Ringer at St John's Church
Most weekday afternoons the church bells at St John's Anglican Church (Canada's 2nd oldest church) in Lunenburg are rung by one man, though sometimes his ex-wife substitutes for him, as was the case on this day. Have a look of you ever wondered how tunes are played on those massive bells!
Saving Saint Johns
On the night of October 31st/November 1st 2001, Saint John's
Anglican Church, located in the heart of Lunenburg Nova Scotia was devastated by a disastrous fire. With embers still burning, the police released the building to the restoration crew ahead of a major hurricane. Headed up by Dale Veno with the help of Greg Ernst and the local towns people, they were able to get to work saving as much of the Church as possible. Consisting of emergency structural stabilization, the methodical removal of
the copper roof as well as stain glass windows, pews, arches and
church towers, over fifty percent of Saint John's was saved. This
is the footage showcases the painstaking efforts of all involved to save this beloved landmark and house of worship.
In the end, after 4 painstaking years of restoration work, Saint
John's, Originally built in 1754, was saved and restored back to
it's original splendor. It is because of the work in this video that Saint John's was a restoration project and not a full reconstruction. Thanks is owed to all involved for the care
and compassion shown on this day and though out the
completion of the restoration. Thank You.

7-26-09_Lunenburg's Active Sunday Morning
Gerald & Norma bring their oxen into Lunenburg on most summer Sunday mornings to greet tour groups as they arrive at the park in the center of town. On this day we followed the oxen and walked up the street to view St John's Anglican church and hear the bells. Walking back to the park, the bells of the United Church were ringing. On this Sunday afternoon in this same park, there will be a musical group in the bandstand. For a lazy little town, there's no shortage of delightful sights and sounds!
