Haregaon Yatra Utsav
Haregaon (also Harigaon) is a village in Shrirampur, Ahmednagar District, Maharashtra, India. It is approximately 5 km from Shrirampur city on altitude.
History[edit]
Haregaon had one of the sugar factories in Maharashtra Belapur Sugar & Allied Industries Limited.(Brady & Brady Group) Set up by the British in early 1919s.[1] The name of the village is believed to be named after Mr. Harison, one of the founders of the factory. The factory had to shut down in 1988 due to scarcity of sugarcane. The village that was inhabited by factory workers became desolate.
Religious importance[edit]
Haregaon Shrine[edit]
St. Theresa Church, Haregaon is the sacred place of Mauli Shrine and the annual yaatra held in her honour every September. The name is associated with the shrine of mount mary in Bandra. Mumbai where the original veneration of mary has been held for her birthday on 8 September, accompanied by a famous fair.
Mat is corruption of Mount and Mary is lovingly referred to as Mauli, the Mother. Catholic pilgrims in the area visit the village for the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on the second Saturday of September.[2]
St. Teresa Church, Haregaon
In 1950, rev. Fr. John Haldner erected the Church,The yatra (Feast) was started in 1947 to help local devotees who could not afford to go to the celebration in Bandra, Mumbai.[3] Now Haregaon is often described as the Jerusalem of the Marathi-speaking Catholics in the state, as nearly 400,000 devotees from Ahmednagar, Pune, Nasik, Aurangabad district and Mumbai attend the feast every year.
haregaon village in shrirampur taluka of ahmednagar district is set to receive thousands of of devotees on the occasion of the annual yatra of the 'matmauli', the blessed virgin mary, on september 7 and 8. haregaon is often described as the pandharpur of the marathi-speaking catholics in the state, as nearly four lakh devotees from ahmednagar, pune, nasik, aurangabad districts and mumbai attend the 'matmauli yatra' every year to celebrate the birthday of the mother of jesus christ. the jesuit priests in this small village had started the yatra in 1949, mainly to help local devotees, who could not afford to go to bandra in mumbai for the annual mount mary feast there. over the years, the number of persons attending the matmauli yatra, celebrated on the second saturday and sunday of september, has increased manifold. unable to cope up with the ever-increasing crowds, the yatra committee has, from this year, announced total changes in the yatra celebrations. for the past 50 years, the high mass celebrated on the first day of the yatra used to be the main religious activity. however, concentration of over lakh devotees at the small campus of st teresa school in the village had posed many problems for the yatra committee as well as the district administration. therefore, beginning this year, masses will be celebrated at st teresa church every hour on the first day of the yatra, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the change has been initiated to encourage a large number of devotees to leave the pilgrim centre as soon as they complete the religious ceremonies. however, there will also be traditional high masses at 6.30 p.m. on saturday and at 7 a.m. on sunday, to be concelebrated by nasik bishop thomas bhalerao. the priests invited to celebrate masses include fr. joe gaikwad from shrirampur, fr. thomas d'costa from ahmed-nagar, fr nelson machado from pune and fr. gilbert denis from rahata.
