Walking in LÜNEBURG / Germany ????????- Tour in Winter - 4K 60fps (UHD)
Lüneburg (Lunenburg in English) is a town some 50km south-east of Hamburg. It was also member Hanseatic League and has the Hansestadt (Hanseatic Town) in its name.
We start this winter walk around Christmas at the train station east of the centre. It takes us a just a few minutes to get to the town across the Ilmenau. There in Old Lüneburg we see the old crane in the river harbor. We make a round this part with some christmas market stalls and apartment houses before we get further into the medieval old town.
There in Lüneburg several Gothic-style buildings can be seen. The market square with the city hall is busy with a christmas market that is just opening up now around noon.
We stroll around the streets, visit St. John's Church and the Am Sande square. Sometimes I had to backtrack a bit as it was my first visit not being sure of ways through. In the end we make it back to the train station where we started.

Silent Walking Around LÜNEBURG, Germany ???????? (Part 1) - Wisteria Walks
Lüneburg (officially called the Hanseatic City of Lüneburg, German: Hansestadt Lüneburg, Low German: Lümborg, Latin: Luneburgum or Lunaburgum, Old High German: Luneburc, Old Saxon: Hliuni), also called Lunenburg in English, is a town in the German state of Lower Saxony.
It is located about 50 km (31 mi) southeast of another Hanseatic city, Hamburg, and belongs to that city's wider metropolitan region. The capital of the district which bears its name, it is home to roughly 77,000 people.
Lüneburg's urban area, which includes the surrounding communities of Adendorf, Bardowick, Barendorf and Reppenstedt, has a population of around 103,000. Lüneburg has been allowed to use the title Hansestadt (Hanseatic Town) in its name since 2007, in recognition of its membership in the former Hanseatic League. Lüneburg is also home to Leuphana University.
Lüneburg lies on the river Ilmenau, about 30 kilometres (19 mi) from its confluence with the Elbe. The river flows through the town and is featured in its song; it was formerly traversed by cogs taking salt from the town to the other, larger, ports of the Hanseatic League nearby.
The motto Mons, Pons, Fons (Hill, bridge, spring) characterised the development of the town from the 8th century as it coalesced from initially three, and later four, areas of settlement. These areas were the refuge castle on the — at that time considerably higher — Kalkberg, together with its adjoining settlement (the Marktviertel or Market Quarter), the village of Modestorpe between the bridge over the river Ilmenau and the large square, Am Sande (the Sandviertel or Sand Quarter), and the saline with its walled settlement for the work force (the Sülzviertel or Salt Quarter).
Not until the 13th century was the river port settlement (the Wasserviertel or Waterside Quarter) built between the market place and the Ilmenau. The resulting shape of the town thus formed did not change until its expansion in the late 19th century and it is still clearly visible today. Lüneburg's six historic town gates were the Altenbrücker Tor, the Bardowicker Tor, the Rote Tor, the Sülztor, the Lüner Tor and the Neue Tor.

Interior of Saint John's Church
History of Saint John's Church - Built in 1234 and it was used as a Dominican monastery, but was later enlarged into a cathedral. It was destroyed in the 15th century during a war. It was restored in a late-Gothic style. The larger outside wall was decorated with two masks of monks with open mouths. City legend tells that during ceremonies, Dominican monks would preach behind the masks.
The interior of Saint Johns Church has simple White Wash Walls, Stained Glass Windows, Pews and décor. The most historical parts of the interior of the church is its 18th century alter, and the nine cycle of paintings on the Passion of Christ found hanging on the balcony in the rear of the church, In 1691, Kords Meijers was commissioned for a cycle of paintings on the Passion of Christ. The nine paintings of this cycle, painted on canvas, represent the only work by Meijers still to be seen in the church. These paintings are based on illustrations in a Bible published in Lüneburg.
The most important 18th century feature of Saint Johns Church is its alter, particularly significant as the only one of Rigas carved wooden Baroque alters preserved to the present day. The alter was created in 1763 by carpenter Karlis Gotlobs Apelbaums, and the sculptures are the work of Danzig woodcarver Ernsts Johans Meijers. It was painted by Andrejs Vilhelms Silings, who also created one or two of the paintings. The alter retable is in general quite modest. At the centre of the retable is Christ on the Cross, with sculptures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul on shapely Rocaille consoles at the sides behind columns with a background of pilasters. Above the broad and ornate cornice, the stable architecture is transformed into billows of gilded white clouds, surmounted by a nimbus of rays, lit up by the windows at the back.
The most vivid features of the alter, are two paintings incorporated into the alter, The Last Supper on the predella and the dynamic composition of the Resurrection of Christ on the second level.
Created at the same time as the alter, was the alter rail with the fine curving railing of the steps and the vases, along with two lecterns, one of which is still in the church sacristy.
The present fairly simple pulpit under the triumphal arch was made after Napoleons invasion of Russia, when in 1815 the congregation returned to the church and began repairs.

Christian Flor (1626-97): Gelobet seist du - Wie schön leuchtet - Nun lob mein Seel
Daher legte Wilhelmy die Manualkoppel (Rückpositiv/Hauptwerk) still.
The chorale arrangements heard here (three out of a total of 13) come from a manuscript collection in the library of the Lüneburg town hall dated 2 March 1687. All 13 pieces may be found here: Christian Flor, Dreizehn und ein Choral, ed. Jörn Jacobi (edition baroque 2004).
The organ heard in the video was built in 1680 for the church of the former convent of St John in Hamburg. Situated in the square opposite the town hall, the church was demolished in 1829. The organ had already been sold and re-erected in the church of the village of Cappel by the organ builder J.G.W. Wilhelmy. The instrument was originally conceived for a far larger space than this parish church; the rückpositiv (chaire organ) in particular is remarkably assertive. Wihelmy therefore deactivated the coupler linking the chaire organ to the great. In the digital copy of the organ used here the coupler is however available.
Also by Flor on this channel: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A Mighty Fortress Is Our God)( )
The three hymns used here are also found in other arrangements on this channel:
