Trip to Bethlehem in West Bank (Samaria), Palestine Jun 27,
The West Bank (Arabic: الضفة الغربية aḍ-Ḍaffah l-Ġarbiyyah, Hebrew: הגדה המערבית, HaGadah HaMa'aravit or Hebrew: יהודה והשומרון Yehuda ve-HaŠomron[1][2]) of the Jordan River is the landlocked[3] geographical eastern part of the Palestinian territories located in Western Asia. To the west, north, and south, the West Bank shares borders with the state of Israel. To the east, across the Jordan River, lies the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The West Bank also contains a significant coastline along the western bank of the Dead Sea. Since 1967, most of the West Bank has been under Israeli military occupation and is referred to as Judea and Samaria Area by Israel. A smaller part of the West Bank is administered by the Israeli civilian authorities as part of Jerusalem District.
For 400 years immediately prior to the First World War, the area now known as the West Bank was under Ottoman rule as part of the province of Syria. At the 1920 San Remo conference, the victorious Allied powers (UK, US, etc.) allocated the area to the British Mandate of Palestine. Following World War II, United Nations passed the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 (II) Future Government of Palestine which aimed to establish a two-state solution within Palestine. The Resolution designated the territory described as Samaria and Judea (now known as the West Bank) as part of the proposed Arab state, but following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War this area was captured by Trans-Jordan (renamed Jordan in 1949). The name West Bank was proposed by the Jordanian authorities to describe the area west of Jordan River. The 1949 Armistice Agreements defined its interim boundary. From 1948 until 1967, the area was under Jordanian rule, and Jordan did not officially relinquish its claim to the area until 1988, ceding its territorial claims to the PLO and eventually stripping West Bank Palestinians of Jordanian citizenship.[4][5] Jordan's claim was never formally recognized by the international community, with the exception of the United Kingdom.[6][7] The West Bank was occupied by Israel during the Six-Day War in June, 1967. With the exception of East Jerusalem and the former Israeli-Jordanian no man's land, the West Bank was not annexed by Israel but remained under Israeli military control. Most of the residents are Arabs, although a large number of Israeli settlements have been built in the region since 1967. Close to 500,000 Israelis live in the West Bank settlements, annexed East Jerusalem and the former Israeli-Jordanian no man's land areas.[8]
The West Bank has a land area of 5,640 km2 (including East Jerusalem),[9] and 220 km2 water (the northwest quarter of the Dead Sea). Its population is 2,514,845 (June 2010)[10] according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS). Other Palestinian ministries indicate that its Arab population, excluding East Jerusalem, is 1.5 million.[citation needed]

STORYLINE
There were mixed emotions among Israelis, Palestinians and Christian pilgrims of Pope Benedict XVI's arrival in the Holy Land on Monday.
Some residents of Jerusalem and Bethlehem were excited about the visit and expressed their hope that the Pope would bring a message of peace to the region.
Others were concerned about the heavy security arrangements that are expected to cause traffic problems and disrupt their daily lives during the remainder of his MidEast tour.
In Gaza, residents were hopeful that the visit would strengthen ties between the Palestinians and the Vatican and might even result in the Vatican putting pressure on Israel to ease the hardship of the Palestinian people.
The Pope is expected to visit sites in Israel and the West Bank and to celebrate Mass in three locations - Jerusalem, Nazareth and Bethlehem.
He becomes to second Pope to make an official visit to Israel, following John Paul II, who made a trip to the Holy Land for the 2000 millennium year.

STORYLINE:
Palestinian Christians say they will restrict Christmas observances to religious rituals only this year - the first time since 1994 that Jesus' traditional birthplace is under Israeli occupation during the holiday.
Protesting the troops' presence, the Bethlehem municipality will not put up Christmas lights or decorate the Christmas tree in Manger Square, opposite the Church of the Nativity, said Mayor Hanna Nasser, a Palestinian Christian.
Israel said it has no choice but to stay put as long as militants from Bethlehem plan attacks on Israelis.
Israeli troops have raided Bethlehem repeatedly this year, and began their most recent stay on November 22, after a suicide bomber from Bethlehem blew himself up on a Jerusalem bus, killing 11 Israelis.
On Sunday, Israeli troops lifted the curfew on Bethlehem, the neighbouring predominantly Christian towns of Beit Jalla and Beit Sahour, and two adjacent refugee camps, which had confined about 100,000 Palestinians to their homes.
Souvenir shops, however, for the most part, remained closed. Tourism in Bethlehem, a town of 27,000 just south of Jerusalem, has suffered badly throughout the past 26 months of Israeli-Palestinian fighting - and the same is true throughout Israel and the Palestinian areas.

Tourism down in Jerusalem and Bethlehem amid Gaza tensions
LEADIN:
The Gaza war is taking its toll on tourism in the visitor hot spots of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
Streets - normally packed at this time of year - are quiet and shopkeepers are reporting a slump in takings.
STORYLINE:
Sitting idle.
With fewer tourists around, the shops are empty - and the staff have nothing to do.
Although not directly caught up in the Gaza war, Jerusalem is not immune to the wider impact of the conflict.
August is normally peak season here - but not this year.
There are a few visitors around - including here at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
Businesses say they are struggling.
Tourism, particularly in the Middle East and in Palestine, is sensitive. I mean it is one of the most sensitive things in this country, so of course it has been damaged, says Zak Mashraqi, a Palestinian shop owner.
I am not exaggerating if I say tourism is down by 95 percent. If you go to the airport you will find zero people. I personally have many friends who have cancelled for August, September and October.
Keren Veraheyden, from Belgium, is among the tourists who decided to come - despite the regional tensions.
We booked the trip before the situation begun, before the Israeli children were kidnapped. I had doubts of coming here afterwards, I followed the news all the time. But then I really wanted to visit Jerusalem so we decided to come, she says.
In the West Bank, where the economy is already weakened by decades of conflict, similar tourism problems are being reported.
Bethlehem, home to the Nativity Church, is seeing less visitors.
But for some tourists, it's a city they couldn't drop off their itinerary.
I had some doubts in coming here because of the war in Gaza and we asked some people here in Israel, we are travelling around Israel, if we can come to Bethlehem and Hebron. And probably everyone said do not go there, but we definitely wanted to see Bethlehem so we went anyway. But we are staying out of Hebron because of the situation now, says Bert Burman, a tourist from Holland.
Souvenir shops - normally bustling with visitors - are quiet.
And so are cafes and restaurants.
Mustafa Al-Araj works as a waiter in Manger Square.
He's longing for some customers to fill up the empty chairs and tables around him.
Our experience in tourism tells that us that in the months of July and August we have as a minimum of between 100 and 150 buses per day coming to Bethlehem. But these days, following the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the war, the majority of groups have cancelled bookings in Bethlehem, he says.
Businesses are hoping that tensions will calm - and the tourists will return.
Here in the West Bank, what they lose now in takings, they'll need to make up during the Christmas season - but that's months away yet.

Key Biblical subjects such as the Trinity, Devil/Satan worship, Holy Spirit Gifts & much more are all dealt with extensively from the Bible's viewpoint and not man's.We will demonstrate how Christian beliefs have become corrupted, and reveal the 'Truth' as taught by the 1st Century Apostles.
Bethlehem icons created by artists .
The oldest communities of Christians in the world come from the Middle East but recent conflicts have driven many out of the region – and culture and heritage has been lost.
In Bethlehem, in the occupied West Bank, a British iconographer, Ian Knowles, is trying to revive an ancient art and is teaching Palestinians how to paint religious artworks.
Some churches in the UK are now commissioning new icons from them.

Banksy’s year-old project in Bethlehem, The Walled Off Hotel (previously), has just released a new set of souvenirs exclusively available in the hotel shop. The series of works, which are each hand painted by local artists, depict the West Bank barrier in a crumbling state. A hooded figure is featured beside the wall in several of the works—either contributing a fresh piece of graffiti or physically breaking through the wall with mallet in hand. Banksy views these works as anticipatory objects, pieces that might accurately depict the wall’s end.
The hotel also released a new album during last week’s Palestine Music Expo, featuring international musicians such as Brian Eno, The Black Madonna, Trio Joubran, Roisin Murphy, and Akram Abdulfattah. The work was produced by Block9 during a “Creative Retreat” at the hotel this past February, and includes seven collaborative songs inspired by Palestine’s history. The Walled Off Hotel Creative Retreat Album is now available for free on Soundcloud.

SUMMARY
=======
Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (French: [maʁki də la fajɛt]; 6 September 1757 – 20 May 1834), known in the United States simply as Lafayette, was a French aristocrat and military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War, commanding American troops in several battles, including the Siege of Yorktown. After returning to France, he was a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830.
Lafayette was born into a wealthy land-owning family in Chavaniac in the province of Auvergne in south central France. He followed the family's martial tradition and was commissioned an officer at age 13. He became convinced that the American cause was noble in its revolutionary war, and he traveled to the New World seeking glory in it. He was made a major general at age 19, but he was initially not given American troops to command. He was wounded during the Battle of Brandywine but still managed to organize an orderly retreat, and he served with distinction in the Battle of Rhode Island. In the middle of the war, he sailed for home to lobby for an increase in French support. He returned to America in 1780 and was given senior positions in the Continental Army. In 1781, troops under his command in Virginia blocked forces led by Cornwallis until other American and French forces could position themselves for the decisive Siege of Yorktown.
Lafayette returned to France and was appointed to the Assembly of Notables in 1787, convened in response to the fiscal crisis. He was elected a member of the Estates-General of 1789, where representatives met from the three traditional orders of French society: the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners. After forming the National Constituent Assembly, he helped to write the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen with Thomas Jefferson's assistance. This document was inspired by the United States Declaration of Independence and invoked natural law to establish basic principles of the democratic nation-state. He also advocated the end of slavery, in keeping with the philosophy of natural liberty. After the storming of the Bastille, he was appointed commander-in-chief of France's National Guard and tried to steer a middle course through the years of revolution. In August 1792, radical factions ordered his arrest, and he fled into the Austrian Netherlands. He was captured by Austrian troops and spent more than five years in prison.
Lafayette returned to France after Napoleon Bonaparte secured his release in 1797, though he refused to participate in Napoleon's government. After the Bourbon Restoration of 1814, he became a liberal member of the Chamber of Deputies, a position that he held for most of the remainder of his life. In 1824, President James Monroe invited him to the United States as the nation's guest, and he visited all 24 states in the union and met a rapturous reception. During France's July Revolution of 1830, he declined an offer to become the Fren ...

The Great Escape
Based on a true story, a group of allied escape artist type prisoners of war are all put in an 'escape proof' camp. Their leader decides to try to take out several hundred all at once. The first half of the film is played for comedy as the prisoners mostly outwit their jailers to dig the escape tunnel. The second half is high adventure as they use boats and trains and planes to get out of occupied Europe.

Liberty Bell
The Liberty Bell is an iconic symbol of American independence, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formerly placed in the steeple of the Pennsylvania State House , the bell was commissioned from the London firm of Lester and Pack in 1752, and was cast with the lettering Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof. It originally cracked when first rung after arrival in Philadelphia, and was twice recast by local workmen John Pass and John Stow, whose last names appear on the bell. In its early years, the Liberty Bell was used to summon lawmakers to legislative sessions and to alert citizens to public meetings and proclamations.
