I was an alter boy here for two years. St John the Baptist roman catholic cathedral in St John's NFLD. Built between 1839 and 1855 in Lombard-Romanesque style, The Basilica Cathedral of St. John The Baptist at one time dominated the skyline of the city and impressed visitors with its striking Altar of Sacrifice alongside one of the most valuable pieces of statuary. The church acts as a symbol for the Irish heritage in Canada, with many Irish contributing to the build of the religious structure.

Last Service for the Cathedral of St. John
4.22.2012: Many more than the Cathedral of St. John's weekly parishioners attended Sunday's service, the last for the 290-year-old episcopal church.
The building needs major repairs and there isn't enough of an endowment to keep the small congregation and its ministry going.
The Rev. David B. Joslin, its acting dean, said the building needs millions of dollars of repairs. An exact amount, he said, was too scary to articulate.
The hope is, as time goes on, a way will emerge, Joslin said afterwards.
During the service, he told the members not to dismiss the sadness or let it consume them. Joslin said they should hold onto faith and take the values learned from the church to be the cathedral where ever you go. Providence Journal video by Kris Craig
