Our visit to Iqaluit was incredible! Watch the highlights from the concert in Iqaluit with Leela Gilday and Sylvia Cloutier. The St. Jude’s Cathedral event was a fundraiser for “Let’s Build a Qaggiq”, a major initiative by the Qaggiavuut Society to build Nunavut’s first-ever performing arts centre.

Iqaluit
Iqaluit (Inuktitut: ᐃᖃᓗᐃᑦ; [iqaːluit]) is the largest city and territorial capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. Formerly Frobisher Bay until 1987, after the name of the bay on whose shore it is sited. Iqaluit is located on the south coast of Baffin Island at the head of Frobisher Bay. As of the 2011 census the population was 6,699, an increase of 8.3 percent from the 2006 census; it has the lowest population of any capital city in Canada. Inhabitants of Iqaluit are called Iqalummiut (singular: Iqalummiuq).

Nmesoma Umenwofor-Nweze is originally from Nigeria and grew up in Iqaluit, Nunavut. She is a student at Pearson College UWC in Victoria, BC and wishes to become a psychiatrist whose practice focuses on cultural, spiritual, and environmental well-being. She was recently chosen to sit on the Prime Minister’s Youth Council. She lives in Victoria.

members of the NAC Orchestra. It was a fundraiser for the Qaggiqvuut! campaign to build a performing-arts centre in Iqaluit. The concert took place at Iqaluit’s St. Jude’s Cathedral.

NAC Orchestra performs Heirloom with Shallaway Choir in St. John's

April 28, 2017 - Heirloom: A beautiful composition performed by the NAC Orchestra with Shallaway Youth Choir. From April 25 to May 7, the NAC Orchestra began its Canada 150 Tour in the Atlantic provinces. The tour includes 80 education and community engagement activities in all four Atlantic provinces that will unite the musicians of the Orchestra with students, educators, community leaders and artists.

Alethea Arnaquq-Baril is a documentary filmmaker. She is known for producing and directing films about Inuit culture, such as Tunnit: Retracing the Lines of Inuit Tattoos and Angry Inuk, which received the Vimeo On Demand Audience Award at the 2016 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. She lives in Iqaluit.

The sunrise from my stairwell window, over 23 minutes at 15x speed. The igloo-shaped building is St. Jude's Anglican Cathedral. This is in Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut, in Canada. The date is November 28, 2018. The best sunrises are on the days with a good bit of cloud cover. The clouds may be gloomy, but for a while in the morning and evening, they are a playground for bending light.

Anubha Momin is a writer, performer, and digital specialist who lives in Iqaluit, Nunavut. She blogs at Finding True North, where she has written everything from interviews with the prime minister to Northern music reviews. Momin is a production manager and unit publicist for Qanurli?, the only drama series filmed entirely in Nunavut, as well as various other film and television projects. Momin was nominated for Samara Canada’s Everyday Political Citizen project in 2014 and 2015. She lives in Iqaluit.

John Ralston Saul (CC, OOnt) is an award-winning essayist and novelist whose fourteen works have been translated into twenty-eight languages in thirty-seven countries. His most recent book, The Comeback, examines the return to power of Indigenous peoples in Canada and has greatly influenced the national conversation on Indigenous issues. Saul is the former president of pen International and a co-founder and co-chair of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship. He lives in Toronto.

Laura Arngna’naaq, an Inuk originally from Qamani’tuaq, Kivalliq region, is the director of finance at the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s mmp a program, the co-president of the Aboriginal Professional Association of Canada, secretary-treasurer of Tungasuvvingat Inuit, and a co-founder and advisory board member of Torontomiutaujugut. Arngna’naaq received a 2016 Indspire Award. She lives in Yellowknife.
