Hong Kong, England (1959)
St. Martins in the Fields, Central London.
M/S of a deserted street in what appears to be Hong Kong. Low angle shot of washing on a line hanging above the street. Tilt down to a sign written in Chinese. M/S of another deserted street, in the foreground is a street sign. C/U of the street sign which reads - 'Tien-Tong St. (Paradise Street)'. M/S of a group of British tourists wandering up one of the deserted streets, they are lead by a vicar. M/S of an archway over the streets, tilt up to show the spire of St. Martins in the Fields - the buildings are in fact a reconstruction of a section of Hong Kong, built in England and laid out in a courtyard of the church of St. Martins in the Fields. It is part of an exhibition organised by the Inter-Church Aid and Refugee Service to draw attention to the conditions in which one million Chinese refugees live in Hong Kong. Various C/Us of more signs written in Chinese.
L/S of the exhibition set out in front of the church, panning shot to show the busy road next to the church. M/S showing a Chinese girl dressed in traditional costume handing out leaflets to exhibition visitors. M/S of visitors wandering around a reconstructed shanty town. The material used for the reconstruction came from Pinewood Studios. C/U of a shack constructed according to specifications and photographs using the same bits and pieces used by the refugees: most of it obtained from the Westminster Council rubbish dump. M/S of respectable looking ladies in hats wandering through the shanty town. C/U of a Chinese newspaper used as wallpaper inside the shack, tilt up to a row of postcards in Chinese - all specially shipped from Hong Kong. M/S of visitors wandering through the shanty town.
M/S of one of the comparatively picturesque streets. Visitors wander past door steps where, in Hong Kong, a refugee sleeps every night - a tragic situation brought home to us in a dramatically effective way. L/S of the spire of St Martins in the Fields seen through the fountains of Trafalgar Square.

HONG KONG: COMMITTEE IS PREPARING FOR HANDING BACK TO CHINA
Cant/Eng/Nat
Hong Kong politics is undergoing a round of intense maneuvering following the quiet release by Beijing of the official members of the Preparatory Committee for the handover of the territory back to China in June 1997.
Governor Chris Patten has already criticised the selection, following the release of the list at the end of last week.
With the committee expected to start meeting later this month, many groups are trying to position themselves to gain influence over the body when it starts work.
The New Year in Hong Kong was welcomed with both fanfare and trepidation as the colony moves closer to reunification with China.
The naming of the Hong Kong Preparatory Committee by Beijing has many in the local legislature worried about representation here.
Among those immediately critical of the choice was Democratic Party leader, Martin Lee.
His party was the leading vote getter in the last legislative election but was left out of the Preparatory Committee.
But his usually ardent opposition to China meddling in Hong Kong's affairs was blunted by a note of cautious optimism.
SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese)
I hope they will not be afraid to do anything that is against Beijing. I hope they do not become a rubber stamp.
SUPER CAPTION: Martin Lee, Democratic Party Legislative Councillor
One China critic who did make the list is Legislative Councillor Frederick Fung.
He was also disappointed that more Democrats were not appointed and fears his voice will not be enough to properly represent the average Hong Kong citizen.
SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese)
I feel that they (the Chinese government) are more favourable to the business sector. I even feel that the businessmen will be ruling Hong Kong. Secondly, they have excluded the ones they do not have enough confidence in or the ones who have a different opinion than they do.
SUPER CAPTION: Frederick Fung, Hong Kong Association for Democracy and the People's Livelihood Legislative Councillor
But Hong Kong's Democrats weren't the only ones left out of the Preparatory Committee.
The indigenous Indian population here, which is technically stateless, has been given no representation.
Neither has the Catholic Church which has often found itself at odds with Beijing inside and outside China.
Taiwan's interests have no obvious champion here, although it has many offices in Hong Kong to maintain support for its citizen's endeavours in the territory and in China.
Several prominent businesses have also been left out of the committee, including the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, Jardines, Swire Pacific and the local Coca Cola concession.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I don't think that there is any particular rule excluding subsequent appointments being made. And perhaps it might be one of the first recommendations for the Preparatory Committee to widen and enhance its own representativeness.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael DeGolyer, HK Baptist University political analyst
Key issues which the Preparatory Committee will decide soon include choosing a chief executive for the Special Autonomous Region (SAR) and defining who has the right of abode.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Another area of concern I think, for the guy on the street, will be the setting up of the provisional Legco (Legislative Council). Again, who is going to be on that, how long it's going to be in existence, and what are the rules going to be for the election of the SAR Legislative Council.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael DeGolyer, HK Baptist University political analyst
While the average person here may be starting the year more concerned with who is on the card at the Happy Valley racecourse than politics, that could well change as the Preparatory Committee starts to assert itself.

Shanghai The St. Ignatius Cathedral (Xujiahui)上海(徐家汇天主教堂)帝比
Shanghai Eastern - Shanghai - The St. Ignatius Cathedral (Xujiahui) 16.04.2006
The St. Ignatius Cathedral of Shanghai (聖依納爵主教座堂), also referred to as Xujiahui Cathedral (徐家汇天主教堂), is a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral, located on Puxi Road, in the Xujiahui district of Shanghai, China.
Designed by English architect William Doyle, and built by French Jesuits between 1905 and 1910, it is said to have once been known as the grandest cathedral in the Far East. It can accommodate 2,500 worshippers at the same time. In 1966, at the opening of the Cultural Revolution, Red Guards vandalized the cathedral, tearing down its spires and ceiling, and smashing its roughly 300 square metres of stained glass. For the next ten years the building served as a state-owned grain warehouse.
In 1978 the cathedral was re-opened, and the spires were restored in the early 1980s.
In 1989, the first-ever Chinese language Mass was celebrated in St. Ignatius by order of Bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian.[1] The celebrants were Father Thomas Law of Hong Kong, Father Joseph Zen of Hong Kong (later named bishop and Cardinal of Hong Kong), and Father Edward Malatesta of San Francisco.
The building's restoration is continuing.

Hong Kong's St John's Cathedral Part 1 & 2
This is a look at the rich history of St. John's Cathedral in Central Hong Kong. It once was considered the tallest building in Hong Kong in the early 19th century. It is the oldest surviving Western ecclesiastical building in Hong Kong. It is also known as the oldest Anglican church in the Far East with its first Sunday service on Sunday, 11 March 1849. Many domestic helpers congregate at and around the Cathedral on the weekends and it is still a popular venue for weddings amidst the super high-rises that surround this gothic-style building.
