Contrary to popular belief, the location of Mozart’s grave is not such a mystery after all. Sort of.
The trouble is that when he died (December 5th, 1791), he was buried in a standard, unmarked plot in the St.Marx cemetery in Vienna’s third district, as was usual practice for the time. Not a mass pauper’s grave, as portrayed in film, but an unmarked one.
Unfortunately, as an unmarked grave, there was not so much as a stray piece of sheet music to highlight the last resting place of one of history’s greatest composers.
This led to confusion as to its exact location, but in the mid-1800s efforts were made to identify the most likely site and instructions given to cemetery staff to ensure it was kept in good order. A proper memorial stone designed by Hanns Gasser was erected there in 1859.
So far so good, but we’re not at the end of the story.
To celebrate the centenary of Mozart’s death, that memorial was moved to the central cemetery (Zentralfriedhof) to join a cluster of musician’s gravesfeaturing the likes of Beethoven.
Which means if you see something looking like Mozart’s “grave” in the Zentralfriedhof, it’s just a monument and NOT the actual grave.
Meanwhile, back in St.Marx, a large stone slab eventually marked the grave’s location and subsequent years saw the addition of further adornments, including a stone angel and column. The current display is the result of restoration efforts in 1950, which repaired damage caused by WWII bombing.

Vienna’s Central Cemetery is an evolving sanctuary of both peace and faith that was established during the reign of Emperor Franz Josef The First. A special committee was made responsible for this project, and where it would be sited, and several municipalities that were not part of Vienna at the time, were considered, geologically, by size, and distance to the city. Finally, Kaiserbersdorf prevailed and on 22nd December, 1869, the committee approved the purchase. The tombs of Beethoven and Schubert are to be found in the cemetery along with those of Johann Strauss, king of the waltz, surrounded by angels with violins. Brahms ponders, with beard and solemn expression while Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart makes a nominal appearance as he is buried at the Saint Marx Cemetery. From the main gate a wide avenue leads to the mighty Memorial Church that is dedicated to Saint Borromaus. On May 11th, 1908, the foundation-stone ceremony for the construction of the church took place. Its architecture and interior is similar to that of Vienna’s Steinhof Church. The historical architecture of the building, also known as the Karl Lueger Memorial Church after the former mayor of Vienna, is one of the most important art nouveau buildings in Vienna. Vienna’s Central Cemetery is the final resting place for those of all religions, situated in a beautiful park with impressive flora and fauna: the splendid Necropolis of the Viennese!

Mozart's Grave (St. Marx, Vienna)
Contrary to some popular belief, Mozart was not buried in a mass grave. Rather, it was an unmarked economy option popular with people without a lot of money, such as his widow, Constanze.
In the the mid 19th century they thought they had identified his resting place, and a grave digger claimed that a skull he had was Mozart's (DNA testing has proved inconclusive). And unmarked graves would be redug over time for new occupants, so while it is questionable whether all of Mozart is under his monument in St. Marx, some of him (perhaps most) is likely around there somewhere.
A visit to Vienna's Cemeteries
I visited Vienna's beautifully set out Zentralfriedhof (Main Cemetery) to see the graves of some famous people including:
- Beethoven
- Brahms
- Schubert
- four of the Strausses
- Suppe
- Gluck
- Salieri
- Czerny
- Schonberg
- Stolz
- Boltzmann (phjysicist)
- Mohs (mineralogist)
- Billroth (surgeon)
- Leon Askin (actor)
- Curd Jurgens (actor)
- Kurt Waldheim (Austrian President & UN Secretary General)
I also visited St Marx's Cemetery to see the grave of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (more a monument as his exact burial site is unknown.)

Mozart's grave at st Marx Cemetery in Vienna, Austria. Mozart's body is not actually there, but somewhere near around (the exact location is unknown). Filmed by me in march 2006.

Historic graveyard in Vienna (St. Marxer Friedhof), the exact position is unknown. Now used as a park for recreation, jogging (!), tourist attraction.
You hear excerpts of the Mozart Requiem, completed by his student and friend Franz Xaver Suessmayr.
