St. Mary's - Howth, County Dublin, Ireland
This church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, was collegiate; that is, it was served by a college or community of clerics, one of whom had responsibility for liturgy within the church as well as for matters of business. The house where the community lived stands to the south of the church.
The earliest church was built by Sitric, King of Dublin, in 1042. It was replaced around 1235 by a parish church, and then, in the second, half of the 14th century, the present church was built.
The building was modified in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the gables were raised, a bell-cote was built and a new porch and south door were added. The St. Lawrences of nearby Howth Castle also modified the east end to act as a private chapel; inside is the tomb of Christopher St. Lawrence, 13th Baron of Howth, who died in 1462, and his wife, Anna Plunkett of Ratoath.
St.Mary's Collegiate Church And Graveyard (Historic Site In Howth)
I had believed that this was known as Howth Abbey but I have been informed that it is St. Mary's Collegiate Church.
The first church built in Howth was on the site of Howth Abbey, in Howth Village. It was founded by Sigtrygg, King of Dublin around 1042. Around 1235, the old church was amalgamated with the church on Ireland's Eye and a new church was built - founded by Luke, Archbishop of Dublin on land granted by Sir Almeric St. Lawrence. Little remains of either of these churches and most of the present abbey dates back to the late forteenth century. The church was a collegiate church - served by a collegium of three or more priests. A private house to the south-east of the church was the priests' house. Parishioners worshipped in the abbey until about 1630. After that date worship was conducted in Lord Howth's private chapel near his castle.

Trip to Ireland | Day 2 | Howth

From October 15th to the 22nd, me and Pepper went on a trip to Dublin, Ireland. We stayed at a friend's house (THANK YOU ❤️) and made our way to Howth on the 2nd day.
In this video, you can see:
1- Our train journey to Howth. We got the worst weather during this trip in Howth. We arrived and it was raining, so we decided to have an early lunch.
2- Jamie's Cafe. Pepper had a sandwich and I had a yummy bagel. I would've had 2 if we weren't in a hurry to seize the day. Truly yummy.
3- St. Mary's Church. We decided to follow the stairs (where I was greated by a black doggy at the top) and were surprised to find this church. So beautiful! But sadly it was closed so we didn't get to see the inside.
4- Howth Castle. We spent a lot of our time strolling around the castle. So much greenery, and just beautiful landscapes! We also tried to do some geocaching, but didn't find it... next time, I'm sure!
5- Transport Museum. It was closed but we were so happy to at least have a peak outside!
6- East Pier. Next we headed to the pier. Since we couldn't go to Ireland's Eye we thought we'd go as near as possible and shoot some pictures :)
7- Radio Museum / Martello Tower. Up we went to Radio Museum. Night time was starting to come so we knew at this point everything would be closed. We were so happy with the awesome view we got to see up here!
8- Church of the Assumption, Howth. We came here because we saw in the geocaching website that there was a Roman Catholic church here. Of course, it was also closed (and we didn't find the cache either). At this point the rain was getting heavier so we started walking faster, ha!
9- St. Mary's Abbey / St Mary's churchyard. It was raining, we were walking at a fast pace, and then we saw the churchyard was opened, so we went inside for a quick look.
10- Then, back at the train station, all wet, we waited and got on the train back to Dublin.

???????? Perfect Spot for Zombie Apocalypse (Howth Castle)
Josh and I took the local bus from Malahide to Howth Island. We were originally planning on disembarking at the harbour but while we were en-route we noticed on the map that there's a castle on top of a hill called Howth Castle. The castle was a few bus stops before the harbour so we obviously got off when we could and started walking towards the castle.
On the way to the castle, we spotted St. Mary's Church. It was just a short detour off the path so we decided to go check it out. Unfortunately, we were unable to enter. We subsequently hopped back on the path to the castle. I was expecting there to be so many people, mainly tourists, at this castle but not a soul...seemingly. It was just Josh and I. We check just about every handle we came across as we walked around the grounds. But it was closed. I looked online and they do tours on the weekends during the summer. But this was February.
In the next part, Josh and I randomly hopped on board a fisherman's boat to cruise around Ireland's Eye. It was an amazing experience. We also saw a seal come a few feet from us before we even anchors aweigh.

Howth is magical
Howth is a small peninsula off the coast of Dublin. It's beautiful and has a long and interesting history. It's the home of my childhood and I carry it with me always. It was part of the inspiration for the story 'Lars', from my book TO DIE OR NOT TO DIE by Armida Publications, Cyprus. Song Bean Na Shi was written by Colette Ni Reamonn Ioannidou, sung by Aliki Ioannidou Vrtaric, who also painted the cover of the book.
