Saint Mary Church Isfahan Iran
Jolfa in Isfahan - Armenian Churches and Armenians in Iran
New Julfa is the Armenian quarter of Isfahan, Iran, located along the south bank of the river Zayandeh River. In 1606 it was established as an Armenian quarter by edict of Shah Abbas I, the influential shah from the Safavid dynasty. Over 150,000 Armenians were moved there from Julfa (also known as Jugha or Djugha) in Nakhichevan, Azerbaijan. Iranian accounts state that the Armenians came to Persia fleeing the Ottoman Empire's persecution (see this article on Iranian churches); Armenian accounts state that the population was moved by force and their hometown destroyed (see Hin Jugha in Armeniapedia). All accounts agree that, as the residents of Julfa were famous for their skill with silk textiles, Shah Abbas hoped that their settlement in Isfahan would be beneficial to Persia.New Julfa is still an Armenian-populated area with an Armenian school and at least twelve churches, including Vank Cathedral, the Church of Bethlehem at Nazar Avenue, Saint Mary church at Julfa Square and the Yerevan church in the Yerevan area. Armenians in New Julfa observe Iranian law with regard to clothing, but otherwise retain a distinct Armenian language, identity and culture. Popular with young people in Esfahan, it is experiencing considerable growth compared to other districts. Vank Cathedral, also known as The Church of the Saintly Sisters, is the most visited cathedral in Isfahan, Iran. Vank means cathedral in the Armenian language. Vank Cathedral was one of the first churches to be established in the city's Jolfa district by Armenian immigrants settled by Shah Abbas I after the Ottoman War of 1603-1605. The varying fortunes and independence of this suburb across the Zayandeh River and its eclectic mix of European missionaries, mercenaries and travelers can be traced almost chronologically in the cathedral's combination of building styles and contrasts in its external and internal architectural treatment.

Vank Historical Church (Cathedral) PART ONE - Isfahan, Iran
Episode 14
This two part video is dedicated to one of the most beautiful and interesting historical monuments in Isfahan city, which is the Vank Historical Church or the Church of Saintly Sisters and its Museum.
In the first part, we visited the Vank Church and its courtyard, and the beauty of the painting on the inner walls of Church. The examples of the famous painting on the walls are The Last Supper, and The Floors of Heaven and Hell. This is without doubt, one of the must see places in Iran, and you should defiantly visit it. Vank historical church was built back during Safavid Dynasty in an Armenian district called Jolfa. I remember reading a piece of news a few years ago, in which this church was elected as the most beautiful church in Middle-East.

Vank Cathedral, Isfahan, Iran.

However, in 1655, this Armenian church was rebuilt as the Christian community was rapidly growing in Isfahan.A tilework plaque inscribed in Armenian can be seen by the entrance to the cathedral. The walls are painted of European inspirations showing scenes of martyrdom, notably of Saint Gregory. The museum of Armenian culture is the building next to the cathedral. The museum displays 700 handwritten books, the first book printed in Iran, a variety of objects related to Armenian community in Isfahan such as Safavid costumes, tapestries, European paintings brought back by Armenian merchants , embroidery, and other ethnological displays related to Armenian culture and religion. Tehran's Christian community get into festive spirit
(25 Dec 2017) Members of the Iran's Christian community began their Christmas celebrations on Sunday.
Some streets in the centre of the capital, Tehran, are filled with Christmas spirit every year during the festive season.
Christmas trees and decorations, as well as Santa figurines and costumes, are among the top-selling items ahead of the New Year.
The festive atmosphere even thrills non-Christians passing the holiday gift stores.
I walk past this place every day and even though I am not a Christian, I enjoy the mood a lot. said Sepideh, a local resident
Some 120,000 Christians live in Iran, the majority of whom are of Armenian descent.
Followers of the religion have always been a minority in the country, but are recognised officially in the law of the majority Shiite Muslim nation.
Christians are represented at the Iranian Parliament and can send their children to Christian schools and vote in elections.
Nonetheless, evangelism is forbidden and conversion of Muslims to Christianity is considered apostasy and is punishable by death.
On Sunday evening, dozens of Catholic Christians with Assyrian and Chaldean heritage attended a Mass at St. Mary's Church, where they lit candles and listened to a choir.
I would like to wish a Merry Christmas for all Christians, fellow citizens and Muslim brothers, said the church's head priest, Vania Sargiz.
We hope that the new year of 2018 will be full of blessings and be free from war and bloodshed, he added.

VANK CATHEDRAL ISFAHAN Holy Savior Cathedral (Kelisa-e-Vank) also known as Vank Cathedral and The Church of the Saintly Sisters, is an Armenian Cathedral in Isfahan, Iran. Vank means monastery or convent in the Armenian language. Vank Cathedral was one of the first churches to be established in Isfahan by Armenian deportees settled by Shah Abbas I after the Ottoman War of 1603-1605. Construction is believed to have begun in 1606, and completed with major alterations to design between 1655 and 1664 under the supervision of Archbishop David. The cathedral consists of a domed sanctuary, much like a Persian mosque. The interior is covered with fine paintings and gilded carvings. The courtyard contains a large freestanding belfry towering over the graves of both Orthodox and Protestant Christians. In one corner of the courtyard is a raised area with a memorial to the 1915 Armenian Genocide in Turkey. Across the courtyard and facing the cathedral is a building housing a library and museum.
