Adventure Series – Walk The Loop – St. Marys
Walking part of The Loop in the Town of St. Marys and exploring some of the local attractions. The Loop is a 13 km course that will take you on a full walking tour of St. Marys. Constructed between 1879 and 1880, the Opera House is a four storey limestone building designed in the Gothic Revival style by architect Silas Weekes.
Located at the junction of the Thames River & Trout Creek, the Town of St. Marys is known as The Stonetown, due to the abundance of limestone. The surrounding land was traditionally used as hunting grounds by First Nations peoples, European settlers who arrived in the early 1840s. The Grand Trunk Railway made St. Marys a centre for milling, grain trading and manufacturing of agriculture related products.

In 1857, the Grand Trunk Railway announced plans to extend its main line from Toronto to Sarnia. As it passed through St. Marys, it was necessary to build two high trestle bridges, once across the Thames River, the other across Trout Creek to carry a branch line to London. The contracts to complete these lines were awarded to Donald Robinson and George Weir and a number of masons and quarrymen along with many labourers were hired locally to work on the project. The first train crossed this bridge in November, 1859, and the Sarnia branch of the Grand Trunk Railway began 130 years of business.
In December, 1988, the Canadian National Railway announced its intent to abandon this line and a few months later the last train crossed the Sarnia Bridge. In 1993, the Town of St. Marys completed an agreement to purchase the railway right-of-way through the municipality. A group of local and area volunteers was formed in 1996 to plan and raise money for a walking trail along the right-of-way and over the Sarnia Bridge. The name of this walkway was chosen to reflect its history: The Grand Trunk Trail - St. Marys

Pinery Provincial Park to St Marys - Rural Ontario Bike Tour - Day 7 of 9
This video summarizes day 7 of my 9 day solo bicycle trip through South-Western Ontario, Canada. All of the clips in the video were filmed on Friday, May 25, 2018.
Starting at my campsite at Pinery Provincial Park I rode out of the park and onto Highway 21. The took the multi-use path heading North East to Greenway Drive, then headed South East. This road eventually changes names and becomes Mt Carmel Dr. I rode it all the way to Richmond St where I turned and headed south. I rode past Dave's Farm (formerly davidsfarm on YouTube), then into the community of Lucan where the road changes names to Main St. After stopping for lunch at Pad Thai restaurant, I continued through Lucan and headed north along Saintsbury Line. When I reached Fallon Dr I turned right and headed east into the small community of Granton. I briefly jogged south on Granton Line, then east along Awmik Dr, then north along Clarke Rd. When I reached Whalen Line I turned and headed South East until the community of Prospect Hill. From there I turned onto Perth County Rd 139 and headed North East into the town of St Mary's. After stopping at the Town Hall building to play the piano, I decided to go and check out the Canadian Baseball Hall of fame. From Queen St I followed Church St. When I discovered that the museum wasn't open I proceeded out of town along Tracy St, Park St, Elizabeth St, Brock st, Elgin St, and Cain St. From there I continued riding East along County Rd 9 until I reached the traffic circle where it intersects with Highway 7. Just beyond there is Wildwood Conservation area, where I camped for the evening. I returned to St Marys and had dinner at Little Red's Pub and Eatery and also visited the Sarina Bridge of the Grand Truck Railway.
Strava for Day 7:
The bike I used for this trip is a New York made Linear Recumbent Bike which I believe is from around 2004. I carried my gear in 2 Giant Waterproof Panniers, and mounted my tent and sleeping pad on the top of the rack.
I hope you enjoyed this video. Please COMMENT and subscribe!
