Kiev. Maidan. Revolution (8.12.2013)
Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Ukrainian. Maidan Nezalezhnosti) - the central and main square of Kiev, and, accordingly, Ukraine. Located between Khreschatyk streets Boris Grinchenko, Sophia, Minor Zhitomir, St. Michael, Kostyolna, Institutska, Architect Gorodetsky and lane Shevchenko.
In 1991 the area received its present name in honor of the proclamation of Ukrainian independence. It should be noted that in everyday life the name of Maidan used since 1990. This name arose because of the large number of rallies in support of the independence of Ukraine, which were held in the square in 1989-1991, so the official name change only approved national name.
In the year 2001 took place the reconstruction area (established a number of monuments, such as Independence Monument, discovered an underground shopping center Globus, eliminated a large fountain - so-called Roulette).
Independence has always been used, and is used by protesters during rallies and protests. Since winter 2000-2001, held on the Maidan protest Ukraine without Kuchma, in 2004 it became the center of the Orange Revolution, in 2010 it took place the protest against the Tax Code, and in 2013, the 9th anniversary of the Orange Revolution, euromaidan began - a mass protest against the suspension of the course of the state of European integration.

Kolomyjka Buczaćka by Ukrainska Orchestra Michala Thomasa (traditional Ukranian music)
The Kolomyjka (or kolomyika) is a well-known, traditional folk dance from the western Ukraine, getting its name from the Carpathian city of Kolomyia. Like many folk dances, it can be danced in a circle, and is usually performed on special occasions, such as weddings.
Columbia ruled the Ukrainian-American market in the late 1920s and early 1930s, recording approximately 430 Ukrainian records beginning in 1925. Interestingly, very few recordings were made by the major labels' counterparts in Europe during the 1920s, making Columbia's series especially important, musically and historically.
For more Michal Thomas, you can find a track on Arhoolie's Ukrainian Village Music CD, and a track on the out-of-print LP on New World, Song of the Shepherd: Songs of the Slavic Americans.
