Town of Pskov: Home to medieval monasteries and modern airbases

Pskov is one of Russia’s most ancient settlements; the town is mentioned by some historical sources as early as 903.

The name of the city, originally spelled Pleskov, may be loosely translated as [the town] of purling waters, as it’s situated at a point where the small Pskov River enters the Velikaya River. The old town is located on a rather high hill of limestone: it is here that the Pskov’s fortress, called Krom or Kremlin, was erected. Nowadays Pskov is a site of cultural tourism, as well as an important educational and military center.

Russia Reveals New 'Invisible' Submarine The ‘Kronstadt’



A new Russian Lada-class diesel-electric attack submarine will defend naval bases and destroy other subs, while remaining ‘invisible’ to enemy radar, an official said. The ‘Kronshtadt’ submarine successfully conducted its maiden dive in St. Petersburg on Monday. The sub is said to be ‘invisible’ because its advanced equipment prevents it from being spotted underwater, Viktor Chirkov, Russia’s former Baltic Fleet commander and now a chief adviser at the state shipbuilding company said.
