Никольский мужской монастырь устроен у Никольского храма (XII-XIII вв. первоначальной постройки), расположенного в полукилометре от Староладожской крепости. Местность, где располагается монастырь - необычная, прямо на левом берегу реки Волхов, под холмом. На нём находится ряд древних курганов - захоронений VIII-Х веков и воинские захоронения времен святого благоверного великого князя Александра Невского (ХIII век).
Согласно преданию, обитель основана князем Александром Невским в 1240 году после Невской битвы, в которой участвовали в том числе и ладожане. Монастырская летопись прямо указывает что обитель возводилась «в память о гиблых ладожских сродниках» - соратниках полководца. После сражения их привезли в Ладогу и благочестиво погребели на холме, впоследствии названном «Победище». Таким образом монастырь является одновременно и памятником русской воинской славы.

Первые документальные свидетельства о Староладожском Никольском монастыре найдены в оброчных переписных книгах Обонежской (1496 г.) и Водской пятин (1499-1500 гг.).
Монастырский соборный храм, построенный в Х - XI веке, был освящен во имя самого почитаемого в России святого - святителя Николая Чудотворца - покровителя моряков, рыбаков и путешественников.

Сегодня одной из доминант обители также является храм святителя Иоанна Златоуста, устроенный по принципу древней базилики. Он построен по проекту академика архитектуры Алексея Максимовича Горностаева в 1860-1873 гг. на месте ветхого храма ХVII века. На сводах, стенах и арках храма сохранилась живопись: сюжеты из жития свт. Иоанна Златоуста, евангельские сюжеты в стиле академического реализма и орнаменты византийского стиля.
В 1974 году комплекс зданий монастыря был отнесен к памятникам архитектуры всесоюзного (ныне федерального) значения. Проводилась реставрация святых врат, колокольни, ограды и Никольского собора. А в 2002 году решением Священного Синода Русской Православной Церкви от 26 декабря 2002 года обитель была открыта «для возрождения монашеской жизни». Настоятелем был назначен игумен Варфоломей (Чупов). В том же году из итальянского города Бари митрополитом Санкт-Петербургским и Ладожским Владимиром была привезена в монастырь частица мощей святителя Николая, архиепископа Мирликийского.
Сейчас в монастыре немного насельников - обитель не может набрать большое число братии, так как не восстановлены пока келейные корпуса. Ждет своего восстановления и главный собор обители - Никольский.

В 2010 начаты работы по устройству водосвятной часовни во имя Тихвинской иконы Божией Матери, сейчас она освящена и открыта. В северо-восточной башне монастыря открыта часовня во имя Спаса Нерукотворного. В октябре 2010 года открыто для посетителей помещение монастырской библиотеки и воскресной школы.
В 2015 году монастырь молитвенно отпраздновал юбилей - 775 лет со дня основания.

The Nikolsky monastery is arranged at the St. Nicholas Church (the 12-13th centuries of initial construction) located in half a kilometer from the Old Ladoga fortress. The area where the monastery - unusual is located, directly on the left river bank Volkhov, under the hill. On it there is a number of ancient barrows - burials of the 8-10th centuries and military burials of times of the Saint blessed grand duke Alexander Nevsky (the 13th century).
According to the legend, the monastery is founded by the prince Alexander Nevsky in 1240 after the Nevsky fight in which were involved including to the ladozhena. The monastic chronicle directly specifies that the monastery was built in memory of rotten Ladoga srodnik - the commander's colleagues. After battle they were brought to Ladoga and piously pogrebet on the hill subsequently called Pobedishche. Thus the monastery is at the same time and a monument of the Russian military glory.

The first documentary evidences about the Old Ladoga Nikolsky monastery are found in quitrent census books by Obonezhskaya (1496) and Votic spots (1499-1500).
The monastery cathedral temple built in the ò-XI century was consecrated for the sake of the Saint who is most esteemed in Russia - the prelate Nicholas The Wonderworker - the patron of seamen, fishermen and travelers.

Today one of dominants of monastery is also the temple of the prelate John Chrysostom arranged by the principle of an ancient basilica. It is constructed on the project of the academician of architecture Alexey Maksimovich Gornostayev in 1860-1873 on the place of the shabby temple of the XVII century.

Slavery had mostly died out in western Europe about the year 1000, replaced by serfdom. It lingered longer in England and in peripheral areas linked to the Muslim world, where slavery continued to flourish. Slavery became more widespread in Ireland throughout the 11th century, as Dublin became the biggest slave market in Western Europe. Church rules suppressed slavery of Christians. Most historians argue the transition was quite abrupt around 1000, but some see a gradual transition from about 300 to 1000.In the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire , slaves became quite rare by the first half of 7th century A shift in the view of slavery is noticed, which by the 10th century transformed gradually a slave-object into a slave-subject. From 11th century, semi-feudal relations largely replaced slavery, seen as an evil contrary to natury, created by man's selfishness, although slavery was permitted by the law.The major European languages, including English, used variations of the word slave, in references to Slavic laborers of Byzantium.
