Choir of London Bursary Scheme
Film by Stanton Media
Since 2008 the Choir of London Bursary Scheme has brought 17 young Palestinian musicians (aged between 14–18) to the UK. Each year under this programme a number of students are chosen by audition to travel to the UK for the experience of a lifetime, spending 10 days in London and the British countryside attending a residential music course and studying intensively at the Royal Academy of Music.
This programme serves as an important 'stepping-stone' in the development of young musicians, many of whom at the time of participating in the scheme are on the brink of choosing a career in music. Coming from a situation of such isolation, there is valuable perspective to be gained from playing with musicians their own age from the UK, whilst working intensively with professional musicians and teachers at the Royal Academy of Music gives a taste of the life of a music student. The programme also provides opportunities to explore musical styles that are under-represented in Palestine: past students have enjoyed workshops in baroque performance, electronic music and songwriting.
Visit choiroflondon.org/bursary for pictures, videos and stories about the the Bursary Scheme programmes we ran in 2008 and 2012–14.
The Choir of London now seeks to fundraise to continue this increasingly important work; please visit or contact info@choiroflondon.org to find out more about this campaign and to make a donation.

Santa Claus
Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle and simply Santa, is a figure with legendary, historical and folkloric origins who, in many Western cultures, is said to bring gifts to the homes of the good children on 24 December, the night before Christmas Day. However, in some European countries children receive their presents on St. Nicholas' Day, 6 December. The modern figure of Santa Claus is derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, which, in turn, has part of its basis in hagiographical tales concerning the historical figure of Christian bishop and gift-giver Saint Nicholas. During the Christianization of Germanic Europe, this figure may have absorbed elements of the god Odin, who was associated with the Germanic pagan midwinter event of Yule and led the Wild Hunt, a ghostly procession through the sky. Over time, traits of this character and the British folklore character Father Christmas merged to form the modern Santa Claus known today.
Santa Claus is generally depicted as a portly, joyous, white-bearded man—sometimes with spectacles—wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs, white-cuffed red trousers, and black leather belt and boots and who carries a bag full of gifts for children. Images of him rarely have a beard with no moustache. This image became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th century due to the significant influence of the 1823 poem A Visit From St. Nicholas and of caricaturist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast. This image has been maintained and reinforced through song, radio, television, children's books and films.

Morag Myerscough: Belonging
A proud Londoner, Morag Myerscough has always lived in the city and has been fascinated by how color, pattern, and words can change urban environments and perceptions of spaces into places. From schools and hospitals to cultural hubs and town centers, Myerscough explores the theme of “belonging” in her work, using it to transform public spaces by creating welcoming, engaging experiences for everyone. Myerscough’s Temple of Agape, built for the 2014 Festival of Love on London’s South Bank, used public space to create an open, interactive symbol of devotion to love in all of its forms. Rooted in creating a sense of joy and belonging for all who encounter a space, Myerscough creates specific local responses to each distinct audience that will see and experience her work, using it to create community and build identity. Her visual vocabulary is inclusive by nature and its effortless energy resonates both visually and emotionally with audiences well beyond geographical and cultural boundaries. Myerscough’s contribution to educational environments was recognized in 2015, when her work with Allford Hall Monaghan Morris on Burntwood School won the Stirling Prize for Architecture. She was made an RSA Royal Designer for Industry in 2017.
