Perast, Montenegro - Day trip from Kotor
Perast is one of the most beautiful little places in the Bay of Kotor. This picturesque town lives up to its reputation as one of the best kept secrets in the Adriatic sea. Perast is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in an area of outstanding natural beauty. This tiny town boasts 16 churches and 17 formerly grand palaces. One of the biggest churches in Perast is the church of Sveti Nikola, which is located on the main square. It was built in 1691, and it impresses with its bell tower which is 55 meters tall and whose bells in 1713 were the biggest in Europe. Perast’s most famous landmarks are actually right in the middle of the waters - two picturesque islands with quite the story behind them. One is called Sveti Djordje (St. George) island, and the other called Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rock). Gospa od Škrpjela (originally called in Venetian “Madonna dello Scarpello”) is particularly interesting given that it is the only artificially built island in the Adriatic sea. It was built upon a rock (Škrpjel) after two Venetian sailors from Perast found a icon of the Virgin Mary on it in 1452. This church is also a museum and is definitely worth visiting. The guide will explain to you how the island and church came to be and show you the various relics inside. The museum contains prehistoric artifacts as well as more recent pieces from the town’s seafaring population. Island of Saint George is other islet off the coast of Perast in Bay of Kotor. Unlike Our Lady of the Rocks, it is a natural island. The island contains Saint George Benedictine monastery from the 12th century and the old graveyard for the old nobility from Perast and further from the whole Bay of Kotor. The town museum is located in Captain Visko Bujovic's palace and is a really interesting stop to see some of the history of not just Perast, but the whole Bay of Kotor. It's filled with a rich collection of furniture and artifacts that were donated by the local population. The town has several restaurants around its waterfront and the cuisine served at these restaurants ranges from traditional to international and deliciously fresh seafood. Perast is an ideal location to stay in the Bay of Kotor. It has a beautiful view towards the peaks around of Orjen and Lovćen mountain ranges. It’s very small and stunningly beautiful and as a UNESCO World heritage site, it is a must-visit!

Perast, Montenegro
22 September 2013 - Twenty minutes away from Kotor is the sleepy town of Perast, an eternally beautiful town on the Bay of Kotor, and certainly one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited. When it's open, it's possible to climb the bell tower of St. Nikola Church for 1 euro, as I did on this day, and be rewarded with these stunning views...
Kotor : St. Nikholas and St. Luka churches
St. Luka is the only edifice in the town that did not suffer significant destruction during the earthquake. The floor in the church consists of tombstones on the joint tombs of the citizens of Kotor, since until the 1830's burials were being carried out in the church itself.
The Serbian flag hangs from the facade of St Nicholas' Church (1909) in the walled town.

Our Lady of the Rocks
video by Czine
Our Lady of the Rocks (Croatian: Gospa od Škrpjela pronounced [ɡɔ̌ːspa ɔd ʃkř̩pjɛla])
is one of the two islets off the coast of Perast in Bay of Kotor, Montenegro (the other being Sveti Đorđe Island). It is an artificial island created by bulwark of rocks and by sinking old and seized ships loaded with rocks.[1]
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rocks (Italian: Chiesa della Madonna dello Scarpello) is the largest building on the islet; it has a museum attached. There is also a small gift shop close to the church and a navigation light at the western end of the islet.
According to legend, the islet was made over the centuries by local seamen who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the rock in the sea[2] on July 22, 1452.[3] Upon returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the Bay. Over time, the islet gradually emerged from the sea.[4] The custom of throwing rocks into the sea is alive even nowadays. Every year on the sunset of July 22, an event called fašinada in the local dialect, when local residents take their boats and throw rocks into the sea, widening the surface of the island, takes place.[2]
The first known church was built on the islet in 1452.[4] It was taken over by Roman Catholics and in 1632 the present Church of Our Lady of the Rocks was built.[4] It was upgraded in 1722.[4] The church contains 68 paintings by Tripo Kokolja, a famous 17th-century baroque artist from Perast. His most important painting, ten meters long, is The Death of the Virgin. There are also paintings by Italian artists, and an icon (circa 1452) of Our Lady of the Rocks, by Lovro Dobričević of Kotor.[4] The church also houses a collection of silver votive tablets and a famous votive tapestry embroidered by Jacinta Kunić-Mijović from Perast. It took her 25 years to finish it while waiting for her darling to come from a long journey, and eventually, she became blind. She used golden and silver fibres but what makes this tapestry so famous is the fact that she also embroidered her own hair in it

Kotor, first mentioned in 168 BC, was settled during Ancient Roman times, when it was known as Acruvium. Kotor has been fortified since the early Middle Ages, when Emperor Justinian built a fortress above Acruvium in 535, after expelling the Ostrogoths. Today's Old City of Kotor is a well preserved medieval town, built between the 12th and 14th century. Medieval architecture and numerous monuments of cultural heritage have made Kotor an UNESCO listed World Natural and Historical Heritage Site. Through the entire city the buildings are criss-crossed with narrow streets and squares.
Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (Sveti Tripun) is a monument of Roman culture and one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. The Church of Saint Luke (Sveti Luka) from the 13th century, Church of Saint Ana (Sveta Ana) from the 12th century, Church of Saint Mary (Sveta Marija) from the 13th century, Church of the Healing Mother of God (Gospe od Zdravlja) from the 15th century, the Prince's Palace from the 17th century and the Napoleon's Theatre from the 19th century are all treasures that are part of the rich heritage of Kotor.

Unusual Lady of The Rocks Church Bay of Kotor, Montenego
Just when you think you've seen everything, prepare to be surprised. The afternoon optional boat trip turned out to be a visit to Lady of The Rocks Church. This was a good thing!
What an incredible approach to the church floating serenely in the Bay of Kotor. And who expected a comprehensive tour inside? Not us. According to legend - In 1492, seamen found an icon of Madonna and Child on a rock in the sea. They began laying a rock in the Bay each time they returned from a successful voyage. Over time, the rocks became an islet and eventually a church was built.
A really interesting tour with all details in the video...
