Visit Holy Cross Church in Kenmare on an Ireland RnR Tour
Visit Holy Cross Church in Kenmare on an Ireland RnR Tour. Consecrated in 1864, Holy Cross Catholic Church features a beautiful interior with ornate chancel, organ and carved roof. It was built by Fr. John O’Sullivan who is buried in front of Our Lady’s altar. The Architect was Charles Hansom. It is locally believed that Fr. O’Sullivan topped the spire of the church with a cock to crow over the local landlord’s agent, whose office was in the Square and had refused him a site for the church.
The most notable internal features of the building are the ornate chancel, the organ and the carved roof (the wood for which came from the Black Forest in Germany).
E J Moeran Centenary Concert Weekend at Kenmare
On the spare of the moment my wife and me had decided to fly over to Ireland from Manchester for the E J Moeran centenary concert at St Patrick's Church Kenmare, Co. Kerry It was jointly organised by RTE and a very colourful l Local character Bobby Hanley, landlord of the Landsdowne Arms Hotel and Moeran's Pub. The new owner's of the hotel have since taken the sign down and Moeran's Pub is no more. Jack Moeran's grave no longer faces The Mountain Country which he loved so well but faces a new development of modern houses. Being centenary year the graveyard grass had been specially cut, in many visits since you would be hard put to find the grave in a wilderness. Moeran spent several years in the late 30's and early 40's staying in lodgings with Margaret Higgins on Velentcia Island, extreme west coast of Ireland. The house has since been demolished, but in the somewhat surreal clip you can see it's location and what it looked like from the illustration in Geoffrey Self's book. The centenary concert was broadcast on RTE FM3 on 31st December 1994, I would love to hear from anyone who may still have a tape of it.
Holy Wells of Dublin
Holy Wells began life as sacred pagan sites, and were gradually assimilated into the early Celtic Christian in an effort to convert the native masses. Many have seen the rise and fall of Catholicism and some now see pagan visitations once again. There are approximately 100 surviving ancient and holy wells in County Dublin, including natural springs, elaborate stone monuments, sea caves and hidden sites in tunnels under the Dublin streets.
This lecture will document the remaining wells in the landscape, with many beautiful photographs of each and its surroundings, detailed brief history and legends attached, and give precise locations and directions, allowing people to start visiting these ancient places of both religious and archaeological interest again.
This is a recording of a lecture held in County Library Tallaght in December 2014
