St Paul's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the city of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. The cathedral, which was designed by architect Aldo Spirito, serves as the mother church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Abidjan.
The first stone of the cathedral was consecrated on May 11, 1980 by Pope John Paul II during his first pastoral visit to Côte d'Ivoire. He further dedicated the building upon completion on August 10, 1985 during a second visit to the country to lay the foundation for the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace (Yamoussoukro). The cost of implementing this modern architectural edifice, reputedly the second largest church on the African continent (as of 2002), and one of the largest cathedrals in the world, was estimated at $12 million. Architecturally, the cathedral is unique and modern, though built to meet the specific aspirations of the ethnic people of Côte d'Ivoire.
The striking external feature of the cathedral which attracts visitors at the entrance itself is the tall concrete structure which is shaped like an anthropomorphic giant. It is dominantly located on a hillock providing commanding views of the city of Abidjan, and overlooking the Bay of Cocody.
Planning for building the cathedral was allotted to Italian architect Aldo Spirito in 1980, under the directive of Félix Houphouët-Boigny, President of the Côte d'Ivoire. The architect designated for the design was Pope John Paul II, who blessed the foundation stone during his visit to Côte d'Ivoire in 1980. The construction was completed over a period of five years by a joint sector company of Sonitra and the Government of Ivory Coast in association with Sonitra, an Israeli firm. The cathedral was formally consecrated by the pope during his second visit to Abidjan in August 1985. It is the second largest cathedral in Africa.
Saint Paul's Cathedral served as a refuge for approximately 1,800 Ivorians fleeing violence during the height of the 2010–2011 Ivorian crisis which engulfed Abidjan.

Yamoussoukro, the Great African Basilica
It greatly resembles St. Peter's in the Vatican, but it is found in Africa -- the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire. A basilica dedicated, as its name suggests, to Our Lady of Peace, and its central nave holds up to 7,000 people seated and 11,000 standing. Its foundation stone was blessed in 1985, and the basilica was consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1990. In this country, Catholics are in the minority, only 300,000 faithful in a population of 10 million inhabitants. However, the construction of the Basilica was encouraged by the then President Félix Houphouët-Boigny. In Yamoussoukro, Catholics represent 13% of the total population. The basilica resembles the beauty of the Vatican, yet it is not a replica. Some call it Saint Peter's because its builders were much inspired by it. But there are differences, such as the large cross placed on its dome, as well as the dome itself which the Pope wished slightly lower than that of St. Peter's. Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro is not a cathedral but a minor basilica, managed by the Pallottine Fathers. The cathedral itself is located nearby, and is dedicated to St. Augustine. The author of this great African church is a Lebanese architect Pierre Fakhory. Marble was imported from Italy and Spain, while the windows are from France. The gardens which host the pilgrims are symmetrical, modeled after the gardens of Versailles in France. There are two golden statues of the Virgin. The largest stained-glass window in the world is found in the basilica. It was manufactured in Nanterre, France, and covers 7,363 square meters. This basilica is a place of pilgrimage, ever greeting the faithful from around the world. It has been the setting for important meetings, including the World Day of the Sick. On the day when this shrine is dedicated to Our Lady of Peace, we recall that the first missionaries who came to this land consecrated the Church to the Virgin Mary.Our Lady of Peace, again we entrust the Church of this diocese, of all dioceses in the country, to you. Prayers were held for Pope John Paul II in Saint John's church in the Ivory Coast capital Abidjan on Saturday.
Ivory Coast is the only West African country the pope has visited.
Pope John Paul II began showing the first signs of losing consciousness at dawn on Saturday, the Vatican said.
The 84-year-old pope's health has rapidly deteriorated, with his heart and kidneys failing after he suffered a urinary tract infection.
Around the world, priests readied Roman Catholics for the 84-year-old pope's passing.
Many expressed hope that his final hours would be peaceful.

Elle ressemble beaucoup à celle de Saint-Pierre, au Vatican, mais se trouve en Afrique. Il s'agit de la Basilique « Notre-Dame de la Paix », à Yamoussoukro , en Côte d'Ivoire. Une basilique dédiée, comme son nom l'indique, à Notre-Dame de la Paix et dont la nef centrale peut contenir jusqu'à 7.000 personnes assises et 11.000 personnes debout.Sa première pierre a été bénie en 1985, et la basilique a été consacrée par le Pape Jean Paul II en 1990. Dans le pays, les catholiques ne sont pas très nombreux, à peine 300.000 fidèles pour une population de 10 millions d'habitants. Néanmoins la construction de cette basilique a été encouragée par le président de l'époque, le président Félix Houphouët-Boigny. A Yamoussoukro, les catholiques représentent 13% de la population totale. La basilique a beau ressembler beaucoup à celle du Vatican, ce n'est pourtant pas sa réplique. Certains l'appellent « Saint Pierre » parce que ses constructeurs s'en sont beaucoup inspiré. Notre-Dame de la Paix de Yamoussoukro n'est pas une cathédrale mais une basilique mineure gérée par les Pallotins. La cathédrale, elle, se trouve dans les environs, et elle est dédiée à Saint Augustin.L'auteur de cette grande église africaine est un architecte libanais, Pierre Fakhory. Le marbre a été importé d'Italie et d'Espagne, alors que les vitraux viennent de France. Les jardins qui accueillent les pèlerins sont symétriques, sur le modèle des jardins de Versailles en France. Il y a deux statues dorées de la Vierge. Le vitrail le plus grand du monde se trouve dans cette basilique. Il a été fabriqué à Nanterre, en France, et il couvre 7.363 mètres carrés de surface.
