Stift St Peter: Christianisation of the Roman Empire Part II
Part II of why Christianity swept across the Roman Empire, with reference to Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
Salzburg - St. Peter's Abbey & Cemetery & Catacombs
Since St. Peter’s was founded in the 7th century, the church and abbey have been the spiritual heart of the city of Salzburg. Aside from its striking Christian architecture, the cemetery and catacombs are also a must-see for fans of “The Sound of Music”.
Lasting Impressions: The Catacombs
A highlight of St. Peter’s Cemetery are the catacombs, which are hewn out of the Mönchsberg itself and date back to late antiquity. The mystical caves served both as hermitages as well as burial sites. These Early Christian catacombs may be visited year-round. The entrance is located at the graves of Mozart’s sister Nannerl and Michael Haydn. After 48 steps you find “Gertrauden Chapel”, dating back to 1178. 36 further steps up lies the “Maximus Chapel”.Entrance is free with the Salzburg Card.
Historical Background
The church and abbey of St. Peter’s were founded by the Frankish missionary Rupert. Particularly remarkable is the fact that the monastic brotherhood of that time still exists, making it the oldest monastic order in the German-speaking world today. After several fires, the church and abbey were restored in a number of different eras, the architecture now incorporating Romanesque, Renaissance and Rococo elements.
The “Long Gallery” of St. Peter’s Abbey
In the 17th century, St. Peter’s Abbey built the “Long Gallery” at the request of Prince-Archbishop Guidobald von Thun in order to house a painting collection. In Italian style, the corridor features windows on the one side and a continuous wall for paintings on the other. Today, the “Long Gallery” is accessible to the general public as part of the DomQuartier tour.
St. Peter’s Cemetery
With its unique setting, the cemetery of St. Peter’s is one of the world’s most beautiful and oldest cemeteries. Surrounding the Late Gothic St. Mary’s Chapel in the center of the cemetery, numerous gravestones and burial vaults contribute to the captivating atmosphere. Famous personalities, artists, scholars and merchants found their final resting place here, including Nannerl, Mozart’s sister.
St. Peter’s and “The Sound of Music”
International guests know the cemetery and the catacombs as a famous backdrop for the Hollywood movie “The Sound of Music”. Pursued by the National Socialists, the Trapp family fled through St. Peter’s Cemetery, finding a secure hiding place in the dark rocky recesses before ultimately escaping safely to Switzerland.
Music at St. Peter’s
Mozart and Haydn both have close ties to St. Peter’s. In 1769, the thirteen-year-old Mozart composed his “Dominicus Mass” for the abbot, while just a few years later Michael Haydn was commissioned by the abbey to write his “Rupert Mass”. Today, the Baroque Hall at Stiftskeller St. Peter as well as the Romanesque Hall are regularly used for concert events including “Mozart Dinner Concerts”.

Salzburg - Stiftskirche St. Peter
Salzburg: St Peter's Cemetery, Collegiate Church of St Peter, Cathedral [Lacrimosa dies illa]
A Musical Tour of the City of Mozart
With music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Chapter X
St Peter's Cemetery lies behind the Collegiate Church of St Peter. Mozarts sister was buried here in 1829, as was Joseph Haynds brother Michael, who served in the court musical establishment and died in 1806. Built on an ancient Roman site, the Romanesque church itself, was erected originally in the twelfth century, renovated in the seventeenth and revamped in rococo style in 1770. The white, eau-de-nil and gilt ornamentation of the interior is typical of the period, as are the paintings and the ornate organ casings. Mozart's C minor Mass was first performed here in 1783, with his wife singing the soprano solos. Earlier buildings and plans for renovation of the Cathedral of St Rupert were replaced in the earlier seventeenth century by Santino Solari. The interior, in baroque style, contains frescoes and paintings. It was for the cathedral that Mozart wrote much of his church music, particularly during the short period from 1779 when he served as court organist.
Music Mozart: Lacrimosa dies illa from the Requiem, K.626
Mozart left his Requiem unfinished at his death in December in 1791. It had been commissioned by Count Walsegg, acting anonymously through his steward and apparently intending to allow people to thins the work his. On his sick-bed Mozart and his friends sang through the completed parts of the work, breaking off at the start of the Lacrimosa, which remained incomplete, to be finished eventually by Mozart's pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr. There is a particular poignancy about this final scene of the composers life and the significance of the text for him and his friends.

Soufle at the World's Oldest Resturant is in Salzburg - Stiftskeller St. Peter
First mentioned in a document by scholar and Charlemagne follower Alcuin in 803, St. Peter’s Stiftskeller is believed to be the oldest documented restaurant in Europe. Over the centuries, St. Peter’s was forced to close for Napoleon’s invasion and other similar trifles, so it’s not technically the oldest European restaurant in continuous operation – that honor goes to Sobrino de Botín in Spain, est. in 1725 – though it undisputedly boasts the earliest founding date.
St. Peter’s has eleven distinct dining rooms, the most recent of which dates to the late 1600s. The two oldest dining rooms are carved into the stone cliffs under the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
The restaurant has hosted countless dignitaries over its 1200-year history, including cardinals, kings, and in more modern times, Bill Clinton and Clint Eastwood.
The Stiftskeller presents weekly Mozart dinners with food and musicians wearing period costumes. You’ll often see patrons in trachten, traditional Austrian clothing that includes lederhosen and dirdls.
