Places to see in ( Trier - Germany ) St Peter's Cathedral
Trier Cathedral, the oldest bishop’s church in Germany, stands today in Trier’s center above a former palace from the era of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. The palace complex was supplanted in the 4th century by the largest Christian church complex from ancient times. It consisted of four basilicas joined by a large baptistry; the complex covered an area extending to the present Main Market. Tours under the building of the Cathedral Information show the remains of the first Early Christian assembly room north of the Alps from the late 3rd century and the remains of the first basilica.
Today's Cathedral still contains a Roman central section with the original walls rising up to a height of 26 m (86 ft). The huge fragment of a granite column next to the entrance to the Cathedral is another indication of the Roman origin of the building. After destructions in the 5th and 9th centuries, the remaining nucleus was enlarged by Romanesque additions - today, the Cathedral, with its three crypts, its cloister, Cathedral Treasury, and Holy Robe Chapel, displays architecture and artwork from more than 1650 years.
The south part of the Roman double church was torn down around 1200 and completely replaced by the Early Gothic Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauen). Nothing above the surface is Roman any more, but there are extensive excavations (not open to the public) underneath the church and several of the Gothic pillars stand on top of Roman column foundations. The medieval church, however, was no longer a long, three-aisled structure, but a church-in-the-round, whose cross-shaped vaulting with four corresponding portals in rounded niches was completed by eight rounded altar niches so that the floor plan resembles a twelve-petaled rose, a symbol of the Virgin Mary, the rosa mystica, and reminiscent of the twelve tribes of Israel and the Twelve Apostles. The apostles as well as the twelve articles of the Apostle's Creed are painted on the twelve supporting columns, completely visible only from one spot marked by a black stone. The intriguing optics are matched by splendid acoustics.
On the way out, the visitor passes stone masons' marks and graffiti from seven centuries, the elaborate west portal, the Bishop's Palace, the Kesselstatt Palace, and the gate marking the end of the Cathedral Close.

Places to see in ( Trier - Germany ) Liebfrauenkirche
The Liebfrauenkirche (German for Church of Our Lady) in Trier, is, along with the Cathedral of Magdeburg (reportedly begun in 1209, but finished after the Liebfrauenkirche) the earliest Gothic church in Germany and falls into the architectural tradition of the French Gothic cathedrals. It is located next to the Trier Dom. It is designated as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A Roman double church originally stood here. The southern portion was torn down around 1200 and completely replaced by the Early Gothic Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauen). The exact date of the start of construction can no longer be determined, however a painted inscription inside on a column in the church reads: The construction of this church was started in 1227 and ended in 1243 (German: Der bau dieser Kirche ward angefangen im Jahr 1227 und geendigt im Jahr 1243) however, it is currently thought construction began in 1230 by Archbishop of Trier Theodoric II (also called Dietrich von Wied or Theoderich von Wied).
Around 1260, the building was probably finished. In 1492, a high peak was placed on the central tower, which was named because of its high technology and degree of craftsmanship perfection. The high peak can be seen on the city dating, but was destroyed in a storm on Heimsuchungstag (July 2) in 1631. Subsequently a hipped roof emplaced, which was destroyed in the Second World War. It was first replaced in 1945 by a roof and then by a steeper one in 2003. On July 13, 1951, the Pope designated the church a Minor Basilica, and in 1986 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A special feature of the basilica is its atypical cruciform floor plan as a round church, whose cross-shaped vaulting with four corresponding portals in rounded niches is completed by eight rounded altar niches so that the floor plan resembles a twelve-petaled rose, a symbol of the Virgin Mary, the rosa mystica, and reminiscent of the twelve tribes of Israel and the Twelve Apostles. The apostles as well as the twelve articles of the Apostle's Creed are painted on the twelve supporting columns, completely visible only from one spot marked by a black stone.

Trier: St Peter Cathedral and Liebfrauekirche
Two of the most magnificent pieces of architecture were undoubtedly the Trier Dom (St Peter Cathedral) and Liebfrauenkirche. The first, sections of which are dated to 300AD is oldest, whilst the latter is the first Gothic church constructed in Germany, and one of the many sites within Trier designated UNESCO World heritage.
2012 Trier Germany, Cathedral (Dom) of the robe
When Caesar Constantine became the first Christian Emperor, one of the things he did was to build the core of the cathedral in Trier Germany.
Trier was Constantine's base north of the Alps. There are large ruins of Roman baths in Trier. There's a gladiator coliseum. Constantine's meeting hall is today a church. The defensive gate that let people in and out of the wall is still intact.
When Constantine became a Christian in the early 300s AD, his mother Helena travelled to Israel. She brought back artifacts. Among these artifacts were one of Apostle Andrew's sandals, chains that bound Apostle Peter, nails that supposedly crucified Jesus and Jesus' robe with no seam. Are they authentic? Who knows? All are contained in the cathedral's treasury (museum).

Roman Monuments of Trier - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Trier, in the far west of Germany, just a stone's throw from Luxembourg, lays claim to being the oldest city in the country. It was founded as a Roman military encampment, and due to its strategic position on the Rhine it became one of the most important cities in the Empire (after only Rome, the eastern capital in Constantinople, and the Egyptian capital in Alexandria). There's a great legacy of buildings here, including bathhouses, fortifications, an amphitheatre, throne room and a bridge, though several buildings were closed due to snow and ice on the day we visited. But it was still a lot of fun!
