Die St. Petersinsel (frz. Île Saint-Pierre) ist die einzige Insel des Bielersees im bernischen Seeland in der Schweiz. Sie liegt im Südwesten des Sees bei Erlach, ist seit der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts über eine flache Landzunge mit dem Festland verbunden und somit eigentlich eine Halbinsel. Ein künstlich angelegter und für Boote passierbarer Durchstich beim Hafen von Erlach trennt jedoch diese Landzunge vom Festland ab.[1]
Die Insel ist bei einer Länge von 4,7 Kilometern im Nordosten maximal 750 Meter breit, in Ufernähe stellenweise 180 Meter. Die Fläche beträgt 1,76 km². Die höchste Erhebung, die Riedmatt mit einer absoluten Höhe von 474 Metern (45 Meter über dem Seespiegel), liegt ganz im Nordosten. Vor der ersten Juragewässerkorrektion, die 1891 abgeschlossen wurde und die eine Senkung des Seespiegels um 2,5 Meter bewirkte, bestanden zwei Inseln: die damals noch wesentlich kleinere St. Petersinsel im nordöstlichen Bereich der heutigen Insel, und die noch kleinere Chüngeliinsel (Kanincheninsel) rund 700 Meter südwestlich davon. Die beiden Inseln entstanden wie der Bielersee in der letzten Eiszeit als Überbleibsel der sich zurückziehenden Gletscher. Sie wuchsen durch die Juragewässerkorrektion zu einer zusammen, und eine fast drei Kilometer lange Erweiterung in Richtung südwestliches Seeufer bei Erlach fiel trocken. Auf dieser Landzunge verbindet seither der Heideweg Erlach mit der Insel. Bei extremem Hochwasser wird diese Verbindung zum Teil überflutet. Der Name Chüngeliinsel wird noch auf aktuellen Karten verwendet. Dort ist eine Erhebung von 444,7 Metern verzeichnet, rund 16 Meter über dem Seespiegel.

St. Peter’s Island (German: St. Petersinsel, French: Île de St-Pierre) is a peninsula and former island situated in Lake Bienne in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. It has a length of about 5 kilometres and a maximum width of 800 metres. Its highest point is 474 metres above sea level or 45 metres above lake level (429 m). It was formed in the last Ice Age (see Pleistocene), when the Rhône Glacier reached as far as the Jura mountains. It is a promontory of the Jolimont, above Erlach. Politically the island is split between the municipalities of Erlach and Twann-Tüscherz, the largest part belonging to the latter municipality.
In the late nineteenth century following the engineering works of the Jura water correction, the water-level of the three lakes of the Seeland have dropped enough to clear the until then hidden isthmus, linking Erlach to St. Peter’s Island, which has eversince become a peninsula, although separated from the shore by a canal.
Monks of the Cluniac order were the first inhabitants of the island, and built a monastery here in 1127.
Before his expulsion, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, spent two months on the island in 1765 calling it the happiest time of his life.[

Erlach is first mentioned in 1185 as Erilacho and in 1274 as Cellie. In French it was called Cerlier. In 1264/66 Erlach received a Handfeste or document of rights from Count Rudolf II of Neuchâtel-Nidau. The village of Sunkort's church was built and consecrated in the 11th Century. Around 1100 the Benedictine Erlach Abbey was founded on Saint Peter's Island (actually a peninsula). During the 14th Century, the city walls were built. The only remaining city gate, currently part of the Rathaus or town hall, is from this era. Towers were added to the walls in the 15th Century. In 1455 the citizens of Erlach founded a hospital. Based on the rights granted by Rudolf II, Erlach had a mayor and until 1798 a 12 member town council with a 6-18 member advisory body.
Portions of Schloss Erlach were built in the Middle Ages, but the western main tower was built around 1500. In 1848, during the foundation of the Federal State, Schloss Erlach became the district seat. However, thirty years later in 1874, it became a school.
The highest point in Erlach is Jolimont which is 603 m (1,978 ft) above sea level. The mountain provides an excellent view of the lake.
The Sankt-Petersinsel (St. Peter Island), really a peninsula, can be reached from Erlach by foot or by bicycle. While Erlach Abbey on the Island is not technically part of the Erlach (it is actually part of Gals) it can be reached easily from Erlach. However, it is now a detention centre for male adults.
The Ulrich Church in Sunkort, is supposed to have been consecrated by Saint Ulrich of Zell in the 11th Century. It was the private church of the Counts of Fenis in the village Sunkort. The choir tower dates from the 15th Century. The massive nave was completely rebuilt in the 17th Century.

I've always wanted to travel out to this lighthouse on foot (I've been there via boat before). The problem is, it is a remote Island, St. Peters Island, OFF the coast of Prince Edward Island. So, on foot might be a bit difficult unless the tide is out. But if the tide comes in, I am stuck here. So off I went and man, this place is very sweet.
Let's go on an adventure to St. Peters Island.

Une excursion en bateau sur le lac de Neuchâtel, le canal de la Thièle et le lac de Bienne jusqu'à l'île de Saint-Pierre. Cette île abrite un prieuré avec un cloître clunisien fondé en 1127: au moment de la Réforme, il a été attribuée à l'Hôpital des Bougeois de la ville de Berne. Il a abrité Jean-Jacques Rousseau en 1765 et reçu Goethe en 1779. Sinon Joséphine de Beauharnais et le roi de Prusse y ont séjourné. Pascal Couchepin, conseiller fédéral, en avait fait un lieu de rencontre avec les journalistes.
